First impressions count. Yesterday was my first visit to Nom Nam House in Media, Pennsylvania. That visit also served as my introduction to Vietnamese cuisine and my first time experiencing Pho.
I had driven past Nom Nam House on dozens of occasions, taking note of its cool, stone exterior and unique location tucked inside a fork in the road. Today, I was running ahead of schedule and decided in advance to stop and give it a try. I'm so glad I did.
Upon entering, there was a customer ahead of me awaiting her order. We struck up a conversation and after mentioning it was my first time there, she pointed out a couple of her favorites on the menu. The owner joined the conversation and after asking my general likes and dislikes, recommended the Pho Dac Biet-- a meaty noodle soup rich with sliced rare steak, meatball and brisket. This was also one of the favorites of my fellow customer, so I took it as a sign and ordered.
I chose to wait for my food outside at one of the café style tables. A short time later, the owner came out, wiped off the already clean table then brought out my soup in a large bowl along with all the traditional garnish ingredients, plus miso and sriracha sauces.
To say the Pho Dak Biet was excellent would be an understatement. The flavors are uniquely bold and balanced. I immediately knew I'd be returning to Nom Nam House for this dish and to try others as well.
The owner/chef took the time to explain all the options to an obvious newbie. Service was fast and friendly. The food was outstanding and portions generous. I can't imagine a better first experience with trying a new restaurant. Note: Their lemongrass sate with chili flakes is a must try for...
Read moreNom Nam House is a delightful gem that transports you straight to Vietnam with every bite. It is real authentic vietnamese food and is a family owned restaurant. The Banh Mi + Pho here is simply outstanding! The broth is rich and aromatic, simmered to perfection with a blend of spices that creates a comforting depth of flavor. Each bowl is a hearty meal that warms the soul. The banh mi is equally impressive. The baguette is crisped to perfection holding a delicious array of fillings. The combination of savory meats, pickled carrots + daikon, fresh cilantro, cucumber, and mayo creates a harmony of flavors that is both satisfying and addictive. Each bite is a perfect balance of textures and tastes. The staff is friendly and attentive, and accommodating! Whether you're a pho fanatic or a banh mi enthusiast, this restaurants food speaks for itself it will leave you coming back for more. Highly recommended !!!

My boyfriend and I would drive to Philly when we craved pho because other vietnamese places in the suburbs were not it. Being Vietnamese I’m so picky about pho and resorted to making it at home for a bit to satisfy our craving. But once we found Nom Nam House, it’s our go to place every weekend or every other weekend. Pho is perfect on a rainy or cold day, when you’re sick, when you’re hungover or really any day if you’re my boyfriend who is a pho fiend. Our go to’s are pho dac biet (house special), pho tai bo vien, grilled pork banh mi (banh mi thit nuong), fried spring rolls, peach iced tea and vietnamese iced coffee.
It’s a mainly a take out place but there’s some outdoor seating and on a nice day it’s...
