I am safe serve certified and have worked with food for a while. I have changed careers but still uphold restaurants to a high standard of cleanliness and using gloves when dealing directly with food(fresh). I have been wanting to taste the food here for about a year now, especially because I love BBQ! I finally got the opportunity today and, sadly, was not impressed... Entering the establishment, the owner was at the door chatting with what I can gather were 2 customers; the customers looked like a couple. There was no acknowledgement of a hello to me so I proceeded to the counter. I was greeted there by the workers. I ordered a sandwich called a sealer. It had pork, fries, apple slaw, and bbq sauce. By this time, the owner finished up his conversation, gives a lil hug with with one of them, sits down by the door and attends to his work computer. Still no greeting towards me. As I'm watching the crew make my sandwich, I'm checking for glove use and cleanliness. I seen one of the workers touching various objects and food with the same gloves...another workers realized he didn't have gloves on and then put them on before cooking the meat for my sandwich... I then became disheartened... the owner comes from the door area, with his apron on, and starts touching food products and making sauce on the grill without, you guessed it, gloves or washing his hands... initially....after just fixing your computer and hugging the customers he was just conversing with...appalled, I was, because that cross contamination is unacceptable. He then washed his hands and starts whistling while he works...all I could think of was the amount of saliva that could be leaving his lips towards my food. Thankfully, he walked away from the area my sandwich. He still did not put gloves on behind the counter for the duration of time I was waiting for my sandwich...while he e was still making a sauce. The icing on the cake that ticked me off was when I seen the employee that was making my sandwich come from behind the counter, with his gloves on, go to refrigerator that customers access to pull out the apple slaw for my sandwich....I couldn't believe it!! I should've gotten my money back then but I wanted to see the sandwich assembled fully to review the contents and see if the amount of contents was worth the price. About a minute or so later I received my sandwich. I was in there for about ten minutes or so. The only one that seemed to know how to handle did and money was the cashier who took my order. She stayed at her post, didn't take over food by fraternizing with the cooks. The guy who wrapped my sandwich told me thank you and have a good night. He was the one that didn't change his gloves but he and the cashier sent me out the door with a nice exit. When I ate the sandwich, I was also disappointed. The flavors didn't mesh. Maybe too much stuff or wrong combinations but I was dissatisfied. It was stuffed for the size just not tasty. Overall, I give this place a two for the reasons mentioned. I wanted to try other things of the menu but this experience has left me with a bad taste...
Read moreWas in media on a small getaway and saw this place and had to try it since I'd been craving BBQ. I read and browsed the reviews and the responses and positive energy they put out drew me in.
FOOD: Big order, I tried the beef and jerk chicken empanadas. Both were delicious but I must say the beef empanadas was probably the best I've ever had in my life, fantastic flavor in every bite. A brisket platter with the fries and beans. Sauce and brisket go well together. Meat is tender and easy to eat. Beans are delicious, works great with everything. Fries are basic fries, slightly soggy but it took a while to get home so I don't fault anyone but the distance.
THE STARS OF THE SHOW: THE DRINKS AND CORNBREAD. it has a slightly more "cake-y" feel to it but with that sugar on top I'd take the 40 minute drive just for a tray of that and some lemonade.
Girlfriend got the pulled pork, green beans, and Mac and cheese. Pork and green beans were very good. Mac and cheese was honestly fairly basic, none of the cheeses or flavors really stood out. Brussel sprouts with the bacon were very good. They also said gumbo was very flavorful too. For me I'd personally like the ability to choose between having it with/without seafood.
Environment is very laid back but not overwhelming. Outstanding service/responses from the staff.
Overall I'd give it an 8.8/10. This is definitely a place I won't forget and would happily...
Read moreRecently tried this place out for the first time after hearing good things. I tried the Jammer burger along with a cheesesteak empanada and a jerk chicken empanada, both were excellent.
Decided to go back a few days later to try something new and I got the Rocky Balboa Pork sandwich, and while I really wanted to like it, I just couldn't. I'm not sure what type of rolls they use but the problem is the roll was SOGGY, and I don't mean soggy from the juice of the pork, I mean soggy like the whole thing was dipped in water. While the contents of the sandwich tasted fine, it ruined the experience because it was a sopping mess. On the bright side, I also ordered a beef empanada with my sandwich and that was as expected, delicious.
My suggestion for the establishment is to either toast the roll or the entire sandwich (or use a different company's bread), because I believe the quality of bread really makes or breaks a sandwich! I'll definitely be back for the empanadas and to try another burger but probably going to skip out on the sandwiches for the...
