Our first visit at Top Cut for my father's 80th birthday. Will review every menu item we purchased, the atmosphere, the wait staff, and the price. I take these reviews extremely seriously because I love to go out for lunch and dinner! :)
First: The atmosphere and scenery is fabulous, hard to beat! Beautiful surroundings inside the restaurant and outside as we were on the 3rd floor at a corner booth looking out the high windows, top notch.
Second: The service was the disappointing part of our visit! As we entered through the elevator the male host was not friendly at all and seemed to have attitude. During our meal we had to ask for water several times. When dessert came we were not offered any coffee or tea, which is customary. However, they were very anxious to take my appetizer from me several times, which I was not finished with. I personally find this very annoying.
Third: The food by the most part was fabulous! We started off with the rolls they brought, which was most disappointing. We thought they were King's Hawaiian rolls with butter on top. My husband has an Alpha Gal food allergy from a tick and cannot eat anything from a mammal so butter is a no no. It would have been nice to have had rolls without butter on top and in this time of vegan and vegetarian diets being extremely main stream we were surprised. When we asked them if they had any rolls without butter they stated, "NO.". We felt for the price we were paying that one would expect them to make their rolls fresh in house. I ordered Crab Bisque at $13.5 and was very disappointed. Not much crab and not much taste and I would not order it again. My father ordered the French Onion Soup Gratine at $11.5 and it was to die for, best FOS he has ever had. That speaks volumes since he and my mother always made their own from scratch. Would go to Top Cut just for the French Onion Soup! I ordered the Waygu Short Rib appetizer and it was delicious, however, there could have been more than three (3) small short ribs for $22. My husband ordered the Colossal Crab Cocktail for $21. It was very good, but felt there should have been more for the price, not much crab. My husband and I ordered the Chop Salad @ $12 each and since it comes with bacon and my husband cannot eat bacon, we asked them to give my husband's bacon to me. We both received our salads and I had NO bacon at all on my salad and had to ask for my bacon. :( It was a very good salad and I would order it again. For the entree, my father ordered their Colorado Lamb Chops @ $50, which were the best he has ever had. My husband ordered the Yellowfin Tuna @ $42.5, which was fabulous. We also ordered the Potato Gratin @ $11.5 and it was just okay; ordered the Asparagus Pine Nuts @ $12.5 and they were the biggest asparagus we have ever seen. The Truffle French Fries my husband ordered were good @ $10. For dessert my father was given the Carrot Cake for his birthday, and it is normally $14. It was the best carrot cake he has ever had and would be well worth the price! I stated above that we were not offered any coffee or tea with the cake, which was disappointing.
Forth: The price is higher than I believe it should be for the food and service we received. I did not order an entree and the bill for the three (3) of us was $239 + tax and + tip. The only alcoholic beverage was a Heineken for my father and that was $6.50. They had a steak special, 2 lb. Tomahawk Ribeye Steak for $119, WOW!!!
Hope I helped with your decision to patronize this restaurant! :) My husband of 33.5 years and my father of 54 years of my life approved...
Read moreWe're definitely hoping for a better experience next time. As you can see, this little experiment of ours a few years ago just to see who had the best dishes by taking pictures and making reviews, has led to nearly 9 million influences on Google through maps and reviews and photos. That really shocks us, but at the same time now we feel like we really do need to make sure what we write is as accurate as possible to help everyone out.
Our system is pretty simple. We try to go to restaurants with the mentality of a hard-working family experience when people may not have the means to always get the top dishes and pay the top prices. We have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in the world but we always try to keep everyone in mind. With that, we usually order something on the basic side and based on the experience, then we come back and get the big stuff and more expensive options. That definitely proved to be an indicator on this visit.
Our menu selections were questioned by more than one server including other servers who weren't even at our table. With our approach, we want to try the freshness of the small plates and use the $64 filet mignon as a topping for our wedge salads. Before we are going to spend money on what claims to be the best steaks out of Chicago, we want to try something that we are familiar with at many other restaurants like the filet mignon.
The edges were dry and the crusting and outside searing was just basic. The medium on the inside was pink and perfect but the outside was very dry and the edges were not tasty at all.
We must have confused them through our service requests because everything came at once. After the oysters, which were actually amazing, the soup and the scallops as well as the salads with the steak on top all came out of the same time so we couldn't even enjoy the courses one at a time. The oysters were incredibly fresh and some of the best we've ever had anywhere, the scallops were extremely salty and the cauliflower reduction was just a salty. So that was not pleasurable. Definitely wish they could have not salted the outside of the scallops so much since so much salt comes out of them after cooking. The soup was delicious but by the time we were finished with the scallops it was already turning cold. And the comments on the stake are noted above. The wedges were not the same. I had an abundance of bacon and my wife's salad had little to none. Has stated above, we note the quality of a menu but as well as how the service on every item is handled. With small dishes and basic dishes like the ones we ordered, we expect the same excellence as one should expect when they get the top and steak and seafood options. We didn't find that to be the case at least on this visit.
We must also comment through full transparency that the bar and the bar staff as well as the drinks were as top notch as you can get. Definitely the best in the area by far and craft cocktails are definitely worth coming back for. And also in full transparency, we were comped for the scallops since we had to remind them to bring them and they did come out quite late along with all the other dishes. We appreciate it that courtesy from the manager and staff.
We're hoping for an experience that would be better than restaurants in King of Prussia and center City Philadelphia as well as New York City, or at least comparable. We live close to the Lehigh valley and we're hoping for that type of experience close to home. Like we said, it wasn't awful but definitely not five stars yet. We're hoping for a better...
