We came to Birdie’s in Valparaiso and I’ll start by saying the food was delicious — my French toast was amazing. But the service was extremely disappointing. Our server, Jennie H, dropped off a carafe of coffee and never came back to check on us. We wanted to ask for syrup for my French toast and to order another orange juice, but she walked right past our table several times without ever stopping or acknowledging us.

At one point, I even tried asking the girl behind the bar for syrup, and she just said, “Sorry, I don’t have any,” then turned her back away. That kind of response was shocking — I mean, at the end of the day, this is the customer service business. If you don’t have what a guest needs, at least offer to find someone who can help. Is there any training for this kind of situation?

When it came time to ask for the check, we couldn’t even get our server’s attention. I had to stand up three different times to try to flag someone down, and finally, on the third try, a kind lady by the door noticed and brought us what we needed.

I rarely ever leave bad reviews — if service is just “okay,” I usually let it go. I’ve worked in this industry for many years, so I completely understand how busy it can get. But this experience was just unacceptable. It’s a shame, because the food was wonderful, but the service left such a bad impression that it overshadowed...

The atmosphere alone is one of a kind in Valpo. Love the retro, yet modern diner look and feel.

The breakfast service was great.

The food was delicious as well. We got the Chicken and Waffles, the lobster omelette, and stuffed French toast.

The chicken and waffles is probably the best in town. It’s actually sweet with a savory kick that will hit the spot. Other restaurants in town do more of a candied waffle, but not Birdies. Their waffle was almost half the size of the plate. It was thick and fluffy and had tons of flavor to complement the chicken in my opinion. Just remember there are jalapeños in the waffle. Little bit of syrup and it’s a match made in food heaven. Cleaned the plate.

The French toast also was one of a kind. It has got to be the thickest French toast in town. It had fresh strawberries on top, a strawberry filing on the inside, and whip cream on the side. It’s the perfect breakfast sandwich that you didn’t know you wanted to have. Cleaned the plate.

I did not try the lobster omelette, but our friend that had it said it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. Take that with a grain of salt. You may like it more if you love lobster.

Can’t wait to come back and try more breakfast items and hopefully the Nextdoor as...

Went to Birdies for the first time and will be coming back!! Went just before 1 PM. Really enjoyed my experience. Sat down and was greeted by our server , Bryan. Started off with drinks and gave us time to look at the menu. When he came back, he gave us all our drinks and took our order. He was very friendly and patient. We ended up ordering a kids breakfast platter with an apple juice, my wife had the turkey avocado panini with chips abd freah squeezed orange juice (she absolutelylived this), I had the smash burger (added egg) and fries with a Coke Zero, and we hared the chorizo tostadas with sunny side up egg as an app. EVERYTHING WAS DELICOUS!! Bryan was on top of everything and went above and beyond to make sure our meal was amazing! Great first experience!! Will definitely be back!!

*No photos as I didn't plan on leaving a review, but the whole family enjoyed it so much that I had to share this with you all! If you haven't, go...

Birdie's Diner in Valparaiso is a gem of a breakfast spot! We stopped in early on a Sunday morning and were greeted with fast, friendly service in a sparkling clean, modern diner. There was no wait to be seated, and our server was prompt with our menus and water. After a brief 10-minute wait, our meals arrived fresh and piping hot. I ordered the Birdie's Breakfast, and the scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked. My wife loved her over-medium eggs, commenting on how rare it is to find a place that gets them just right. The real standout, though, were the pancakes—thin, golden, and absolutely delicious! The only downside was that the prices were a bit higher than expected, but the quality of the food and service made it worthwhile. We'll definitely be back!
