Viking Chili Bowl — Restaurant in Valparaiso

My in laws and parents love this restaurant and want to go here on every holiday. That's why I gave it 4 stars. I don't really enjoy the food at all and usually just get eggs and coffee. Both are just ok to me. The waitresses are always very friendly.

They could use a current-era point of sale system. I wish you could pay at the table and that the bill was tabulated with a total. Preferably by as computer and not just handwritten. We always have to break out the phone calculators to figure out the total, approx tax and what we should tip. The total at the register usually matches but if it doesn't, there's nothing to refer to anyway.

It's a restaurant from a different time and they just do things a different way. Maybe that's why our parents love it. A little slower, a little less technical, a lot less pandemic-panicked in terms of distancing or masking. Regular diner-style food. If you like these things, this is the...

Just finished Saturday Morning breakfast outing. Generous food portions at good values. The ham and pancakes really outstanding. Added some grilled onions to my breakfast entree...very good. Ordered hash browns "crispy" came out a bit too crispy. Food came out in reasonsble time for busy Saturday morning. Good service friendly waitresses. Coffee was basic like a Denny's. If you are a Dark Roast coffee fan it will be sub par for you. Also no flavored creamers (at least not offered). Previously has gotten ham sandwich and chili to go on a lunch visit. The chili was really not good...more like a gravy than a chili. Canned Dennison or Hormel from the grocery store would be ten times better. Ham was good on that visit but bread a bit over toasted. It was our first time visiting the Viking Chili Bowl in Valpo. We called ahead for a table since we were a party of 6. Glad we did. Even though the place was packed, we had excellent, friendly service. I was impressed that our food arrived as soon as it did. The food was good. My husband absolutely loved the ham. Portions are big. My granddaughter barely got through a half on one of her pancakes. I had the fish sandwich with Onion rings. Sandwich was standard. I really enjoyed the rings. My husband and I ordered the chili to go for dinner. I have to say, I was disappointed. The only negative. The chili looked very processed. Like it came straight from a can. It was an unappealing brown color and it didn't taste good. Guess I had a sort of expectation from the restaurant's name. Again, everything else was pleasant and enjoyable outside of the Chili.
