We are in the autumn of our years, the leaves have fled the trees like clouds of starlings. The weather has changed, it is cold and the days have become dark and menacing. It is the last day of the year. It’s been a rough one, the country is divided and the future uncertain.
What I wanted on this precipice of change, this symbolic day, was something crunchy, savory and deep with heart and history. All of the places on my list were closed and as a last resort I turned to Victorico’s, thankful it was open as the clock began to wind down.
The place is stark, bright colors, but with no character. Like a Mexican McDonald’s, all plastic and steel and nothing personal. I got the plate with four rolled tacos, or as I know them, taquitos with rice and beans. I was hungry for a certain texture, a desire for a tactile sensation… A crunch in other words.
This seemed like a safe bet, I don’t think I’ve ever had a taquito that wasn’t crunchy, well as we launch into the new year that has changed for me on this night. The plate which arrived extraordinarily fast looked OK, but the speed with which it came should have warned me. These were not fresh. They were not crunchy and they tasted stale. They had obviously been sitting somewhere in storage in the back. The meat inside was flavorless and bland, the rice and beans like ghosts upon the plate. I get better taquitos at Costco, and for a lot less. The hibiscus drink was OK although it had so much sugar in it as to almost be a syrup. I liked the serve yourself salsa bar, but neither of those things come anywhere near redeeming this sad New Year’s Eve. Good Mexican food can be profound. It can be deep and savory and take you south of the border to colorful streets and warm blue water. You can taste the history, the heart and love as it graces your taste buds. Good Mexican food takes me back on a journey through my past, kind people, strong hands, and honest straightforward food. But this is not that. I will hazard to say it is the worst Mexican food I have ever had in Vancouver, which is saying something. There is no heart here, there is nothing welcoming or memorable or exciting. It is a sellout to the worst of American culture. It is like a masquerade of what real Mexican food can be. A taquito mask covering emptiness and mediocrity. This is a...
Read moreAlright Y’all. I spent $53 and some change here. This was my first time. I’ve been told by a few people it’s super good! I looked online and they had a clear photo of the menu so i could figure out what i wanted before hand. prices and options were the same once I got to the drive-thru.
Immediately told the lady what I wanted, she was friendly-neutral. knowledgeable when i asked about a drink and took my big order very fast!without rushing me.
-Here’s what we ordered.- Surf & Turf Burrito OMGG this was one of the best burritos ive had in a restaurant. it tasted like a really good homemade burrito. layers of flavor the shrimp was cooked to perfection & the asada was amazing iykyk!! 20/10! one of my favorites on the menu! Asada Fries the steak was sooo tender. not a bunch of fat like some other places, real tender, flavorful & meaty. loaded with lots of toppings. easily one of the best fries in town! 10/10 highly recommended if youre a asada fry fan! (Soft) Fish Taco - chunky piece of HARD fried fish, just the way I love it! nobody wants no daggon soggy fish! the sauce was seasoned nicely. i could taste the layers and textures 8.8/10 highly recommend! 3 Rolled Taco Guac&Cheese - So amazing! crispy & warm! the guac was flavorful. Tamale- ehhh. the red sauce was really yummy, they used a-lot on the tamale, The masa was very dry though…. Even with all that sauce on there. the flavor was good a little too much chicken seasoning in masa for my liking. it was tiny too. with little pre diced chicken. definitely would not buy again. 2/10 dont recommend. Hibiscus Tea- delicious. not too sweet or sugary. it was...
Read moreI have been here twice and both times I had to wait at least 15 min for the most simples of things. The first time I ordered 3 horchata, a flan and a churro. It took them 20 min to get me this order. I watched the girl who took the order walking around in the kitchen and using her phone and what looked to be an attempt to clean. After the wait and viewing the lady attempt to clean (with no hand washing) she gave me my food and was rude about it as if I had put her out due to waiting for the food that I ordered. When I took a drink of the first horchata is tasted okay but had a heavy cinnamon taste. I went and tasted the 2nd and 3rd I ordered because I was giving them to my kids, and they had a chalk taste to them. I looked on the bottom of the container and saw this powder substance. If I wanted this, I would have gotten the powder form the local grocery store and made it at home. the churro was rock hard and unable to be eaten and the flan was room temp. The 2nd time I went there I got 2 steak breakfast burritos. They had no flavor at all! You had to drown them in a sauce of some sort to add any flavor to the burrito. Why would I pay 17 dollars for something that I can go down the road to Muchas and get the exact same burrito that is stuffed fuller and also has WAY more flavor and is half the price. My advise is to stay away from this location unless you want flavorless food and want to wait at least 15 min for the most...
