We love Masa Sushi in Camarillo and hoped this place would be the same. They're not the same restaurant, but the menu is similar.
We weren't excited about the food or service. The food was just okay; definitely not as good as Camarillo Masa. As for the service: the waitress wasn't able to answer our questions about the menu like "what comes on the salad." That's not a big deal, but it's nice to offer to find the answer out. Our food was erroneously brought to literally every other table on patio before it was brought to ours. We weren't asked if we needed anything else; it was dropped off and the server quickly went back inside. Not a big deal, I went inside and asked for what we needed myself.
We left unimpressed but none of the was egregious until the manager stopped us while we were leaving to ask me to please check my tip and total amount to make sure they're correct. I know she didn't actually think I accidentally wrote $0 with a line through it and then accidentally correctly added that to the total and accidentally put the correct sum as the total. If the customer doesn't subsidize their staff's wages, the restaurant has to pay their employees themselves. I get it. But to stop me as we're leaving to ask why I didn't tip? Paying the wait staff to do their job is your responsibility, Masa. They barely did the bare minimum of narrowly meeting their job requirements. She asked if something went wrong ... It was just "okay." Until she did this. This is what prompted a review. I otherwise would have just known for the Future that it's not a great place to eat and left it at that. Remember that tips aren't obligatory; they're for...
Read moreRACIST!!! AUTHORITARIAN!!! My husband and I have been residents in Ventura for 30+ years. We loved Masa Sushi, we were regular customers and we enjoyed bringing our big party of friends for Sushi and Sake. We would brag about this place and were proud to bring our friends here. But on this night of Dec 26,2023, my husband and I were taking a walk in downtown. My husband’s knee gave out in front the Masa front door. He was in pain, so we sat down at a table for two right outside of the Masa window . Immediately, a large, young Asian woman came up to us, asking us to leave if we were not ordering anything. After explaining to her that we are regular customers, and that my husband’s knee went out with pain, I said further that we only needed a couple of minutes. She immediately called on a city security guy who happened to be nearby, to get us off the table. The security man was more compassionate than the woman, seeing that my husband was in pain. He told us to take our time. I went inside the restaurant and ask for a manager and the same heavy-set Asian woman confronted me and said she was the manager. Then she proceeded to say to me, “ where did you get your education .. If you don’t understand that the chairs are for paying customers only, you should go back to Mexico “. Shame! Shame!Shame! On Masa. I am a proud Ventura resident. I love my town for its inclusiveness and diversity. I didn’t believe that racism is still lurking in this beautiful town . If anyone reading this review feels appalled by this overt racism, take a stand and...
Read moreFood was okay, not spectacular, pricey for the amount and quality. The service was horrible. Supposedly they close at 9pm on weekdays. We arrived at 7:50pm and were welcomed and seated. Placed an order for an appetizer, and the waitress returned promptly to take our food order, and it quickly went downhill. Mind you, it’s still an hour before their closing time, and the waitress rushed us thru ordering, while explaining that we had to order everything we could possibly want RIGHT NOW, because they were ‘closing the kitchen’, but added, “no rush”…. We ordered some entrees and rolls, and while still eating our salads, the waitress brought the check, set it down and said, “no rush”. Seriously? As we were eating, she kept hovering by the table, and finally told us that (8:15) she had to close out the register, and asked us to pay the tab. At this point, I asked her, “oh- so there is a rush after all?”. For the next 20 min, while we tried to enjoy our pricey dinner with no rush, two restaurant employees sat across the room, glaring at us for frequenting their restaurant during their business hours. I get it- you guys are tired and you want to go home- so maybe don’t seat people an hour before closing? No, they were more than happy to allow us to order and pay for all this food, just not enjoy it. Given the overall vibe of this place, we will return...
