On Sunday, I went with a group of friends to Old Scratch Pizza in Centerville. There was a group of about 15 of us, and there were also mixed reviews. This new location is large and open with bench seating. The menu has a mix of interesting pizzas, but you can customize any pizza to your liking. You get about six slices out of the pizza. Prices range from about $8-13. A few people started with appetizers.
I tried one of the oven roasted castelvetrano olives. I gotta say, I don’t normally eat olives unless they are on a pizza or in a sauce in some kind of way, but this wasn’t hateful. The olives didn’t have a very briny taste that I usually find. They did have pits in them, though. I also tried the whole roasted cauliflower, which is apparently a fan favorite. I, however, was not impressed. It wasn’t because it’s a vegetable, it was because I didn’t get much flavor from it. The cauliflower was drizzled with olive oil (and appeared to be taking a shallow bath in it too) and served with a romesco sauce (roasted red pepper, garlic, and almonds). I found the cauliflower to be very bland and so was the sauce. Others seemed to enjoy it. Now, on to the pizza.
Old Scratch does have vegan, gluten-free, and vegetarian pizzas on their menu. Side note for vegans: There is a vegan marinara pizza on their menu, however I find it weird that it does not come with cheese (That begs the question, is it really vegan then? Is it too much to invest in a good vegan cheese?). But I do have to say that a nice thing about Old Scratch is that you can bring in your own cheese and they will bake your pizza with it, which some people did.
It was the consensus of the group that the crust was really good and I concur. It was crispy and thin. For the pizza, it was pretty much a mixed bag. Some really enjoyed the pizza, Others didn’t think it was anything special. I didn’t try everyone’s pizza, but I tried a couple. Because quite a few people chose to customize their pizza, I cannot really judge if it was good or not due to everyone’s own personal taste. Its hard to say if the customization was to the benefit or detriment of the original pizza toppings. I did however try a slice of the Angry Beekeeper. Along w/ a red sauce and cheese, it was also topped w/ spicy salami, a housemade hot honey, and olive oil. You would think that the honey would be off putting, but actually it gave a very nice dimension to the pizza, balancing well w/ the spiciness of the salami. I would eat it again. I myself went pretty basic w/ the Brooklyn pizza. It had housemade meatball and sausage. It was just okay for me. I preferred the Angry Beekeeper. Perhaps it was the heavy toppings, but due to the thinness, my crust got a little mushy.
Bottom line: if you like pizza and want something more than just a basic one, Old Scratch is...
Read morePlease know that I love this place and have been there numerous times; it's one of my top 5 pizza places in the area. The atmosphere, service, and the food are great! But... today was a disappointment.
We met some friends there for lunch and ordered the house salad and the Shroom pizza. After getting our drinks and sitting down, the salad came out pretty quickly. However, it had hardly any dressing on it at all, very bland. But... we forged through it and chalked it up to a mistake because that happens!
Our friends got their food and started digging in. It looked delicious, and they said it was very good. We were informed that our pizza would take another 15 minutes after we had already waited about 15, and we were right behind our friends when they ordered.
Finally, our pizza came out, and I was excited. Did I mention I love the Shroom pizza? However, I could tell right away that it was not going to be good because the mushrooms looked overbaked and were teetering on black. But... I thought I was seeing things.
My wife and I took a bite, and sure enough, the pizza had a burnt taste to it. I flipped it over, and the crust on the bottom was even burnt. So, I flagged down a server, and he apologized and took it back. He came back and said that our pizza would be on the house. I was confused as I had already paid for it.
After a few minutes, another server came back with another pizza, and I inquired about the "on the house" since I had already paid. He said that what the other guy meant was they'd make another pizza for us. Not really what "on the house" means.
Unfortunately, after he left, we each took a slice, and the pizza was no better. It was still burnt. We were still hungry but choked it down and took the rest home, which will probably end up in the trash. Please know... we will be back, as we love this place, especially me and that Shroom pizza. But today was a...
Read moreThis place is not impressive and definitely not worth the money or time. I was excited to try the new location because the reviews for downtown were great. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. $14 for a 12 inch pizza is robbery. Especially when they are charging $2 for 7 small, very burnt pieces of bacon added on not even equaling half a slice of bacon in total. Vegan option, but no vegan cheese? One of our pizzas crust was burnt to a crisp another so soggy it flopped over and the toppings fell off (I'm into a new york style vibe, but that was a bit excessive). Anyway, the place is really just not that good. If you're wanting a good craft pizza around the same price range that is more than edible I'd suggest Pies and Pints or Rapid Fired if you are wanting to stick with a local, counter/quick service theme. I love to support local businesses and I honestly had high hopes, but I would not recommend this location to anyone and I will not be returning. I did want to throw in that the manager did reimburse our money, but the entire thing was just comical. $35 for 2 12in pizzas is laughable, especially considering they didn't even taste good. To top off the visit, we had a group of 4, myself and my boyfriend received our pizzas and the other couple in our party didn't get theirs until about 15 to 20 minutes later, the ordered right after us. Do...
