Usually, a I would give every star but I want to start this with I live in this neighborhood in Park van Ness. I have been on the hands and knees planting along the streets, go to the farmer markets and patronize most the businesses on Connecticut I AM a part of this community. I am in Calvertâs quite a bit. Itâs my happy place, I send people there all the time. Friday August 12, 2022 when I was humiliated by a manager at Calvert Wine I was absolutely shocked. I had just finished a grueling interview and wanted to treat myself to some bubbly. One of the guys recommended a lovely crĂ©mant that I placed in the chiller, I also got my normal frommager cheese and joked around with the one of the demonstration ladies, other customers and cashiers as she was giving out hot vodka for the demo. We had a good laugh and showed her how to use the chiller. As I waited for mine a to chill an older African gentleman approached me and stood TOO close to me and asked with no discretion if I âhad been the one that had an issue with the manager last weekâ. I saidâ Pardon sir? He then repeated again âAre you the one with the picture up front that gave problems last weekâ? I said how dare you, I donât know who you think I am but if there is a picture you should be checking that rather than harassing a client. I told him how unprofessional he was, and I should probably leave for such disrespect. HIS RESPONSE WAS âBYEâ. I asked him to please leave me alone and he should be ashamed of how he handled that No apology. Then I decided I shouldnât let one wildly unprofessional, CRASS, man ruin one of my favorite places. I paid for my crĂ©mant and cheese. One of the cashiers apologized for him since she knows me. I am there at LEAST once a week. I am good, contributing member of this community. I walked past there today, and I realized I was SCARED to go in because I saw him there. I am so sad he has ruined one of the reasons that made me choose this neighborhood. Shame on you sir. No one should be made to feel the way I did Friday and how...
Read moreMy 5 stars ARE ONLY FOR JEFF in the Cheese Section and he is the one big reason we come back to this store.
I think Jeff mainly works Saturday afternoon? Not sure. But he is worth waiting for a whole week to get him to serve you. If he is busy, I would urge you to wait until Jeff becomes free. Just step aside the line and wait patiently for Jeff.
I told him (and every one one of my Cleveland Park and Chevy Chase rich international / Embassy friends) that Jeff is like a top Paris-level French cheese shop owner who is an expert on ALL types of cheeses.
Jeff shows you the size of the cheese to be cut and then asks you if it is what you want size-wise. Once you nod, he cuts and wraps it well.
He knows the differences between raw milk and pasteurized cheeses. He handles the cheeses with extreme love and care. He doesn't throw it on the weighing machine like it is a piece of crap and doesn't grunt at you. He knows these cheeses cost a fortune and are worth being given care in handling.
He knows the differences across the various countries of origin of the cheeses they have in the glass "vitrine".
He is always smiling even if it is tough day. He is the ultimate professional. I hope he stays there forever. I will patiently wait until Saturday afternoon comes before I enter the store to buy cheeses.
I hope the Owner of this store recognizes what a Gem Jeff is!! Thank you. Jeff is the ONLY reason I buy cheeses at Calvert Woodley and tell everyone I...
Read moreThis is a great store and a little hidden gem on New Mexico Ave (right beside Starbucks). I've shopped here many times and usually its to get something very specific for wine and whiskey drinkers who know their stuff so not the average bottle of plonk. For that reason I can trust Calvert Woodley to always have that special something I need. The last few times I was there, the store was busy but at least 2 people on the floor around the store asked if I needed any help. What I really like is if you say "no thanks I'm all good, just browsing", they let you do just that but you still feel comfortable to go back and say "hey I've had a good look but could now do with some advice" and they'll instantly help you out and give you their best advice based on the short list you have come up with. The prices are very competitive (I always shop around online first) so I always feel confident that I can shop here, get what I want that's special but also pay at a competitive market price. I used to work for Guinness Ireland (Diageo) in their headquarters in Dublin, Ireland so I have a good sense of whiskey, vodkas, beers and always feel the advice they give in this store is market smart!! Helpful, friendly and courteous and they have a great curb side serve so you can't go wrong. Recommend you stop in - it looks smaller on the outside than it is inside and they have a LOT of stock!! My local so...
