Disappointing Experience – Inaccurate Billing and Unprofessional Service

We visited Viet Chopstick to celebrate after our Pentecost church service. While the food was fine, the experience was overshadowed by poor service and questionable billing practices.

We requested three separate bills, and each had the tip automatically added, as expected for parties of five or more. However, after our credit cards were processed, we noticed that the final charges were different from the totals shown on the original receipts—even though no changes had been made to the orders or tip percentages.

When I brought this to the server’s attention, he insisted that the original printed totals were incorrect and asked me to use a calculator to verify that the processed amounts were correct. I didn’t need a calculator to see that the amounts before and after payment didn’t match—which should never happen without a clear explanation.

For example, my original bill totaled $66.13, but after payment, the charge was $67.15. This discrepancy was never explained. The server became increasingly defensive and raised his voice instead of addressing the issue professionally. He refused to acknowledge that anything might be wrong with the billing process, nor did he take accountability for the confusion.

This lack of transparency and professionalism is concerning. Restaurants should ensure billing accuracy and be able to explain discrepancies respectfully when asked. I believe this issue warrants further attention, possibly from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), as customers deserve honesty and clarity when it comes to their charges.

If you dine here, check your bill carefully. What should have been a joyful celebration ended with unnecessary confusion and...

Viet chopsticks is a pleasant new surprise in the Van Ness neighbourhood. My husband often gets the beef stew with rice noodles and says it's very good. Other members of our house (four people) have enjoyed the stir fried beef with vegetables in a brown sauce and the chicken on vermicelli noodles. Their shaky beef is very good, if inconsistent. The 1st time I had it, the beef was very tender and nicely spiced. The 2nd time the meat was much chewier and the vegetables were a little meagre. But both times it had a nice flavor with just a little heat. For my part, I had given up ordering fried rice from other Asian restaurants because it was always oily or tough. Viet Chopsticks' version is flavorful and fluffy. The shrimp that I got were plentiful and not overcooked. I also very much enjoy the crispy Vietnamese Spring rolls.

A word of warning: There are so many items on the menu that each one has a number as well as a description. They have other locations and the numbers on the menu items are different. This is easy to get wrong when you pull up the identical- looking menus online. Make sure you are ordering from the proper menu for your area. Sadly, they do not do their own delivery. The prices when ordering from grubhub or ubereats, for example, can be higher per item, the menu numbers can be different, some items are missing, and between the delivery fee and tip, my last order was almost $40 higher than if I had picked it up myself.

They have other interesting items that I think I will wait to have when we can eat indoors again. Its a new area restaurant that I am hoping will stick around...

My husband and I are foodies so we love trying new places. We were happy that a new place opened up in our area. At first, my husband did a pick up, the food was great! So this restaurant was on our foodie list. We decided to try it again, but this time dining in. The food met our expectations, however there was a red flag with the service. The waitress was not paying enough attention and it took so long for them to place our order and even get our bill. Since, the food was good, we decided to give it another try, maybe this time the service will be good. The third time around, was not a charm at all!!! The service was SO BAD. The one who got our menu and the other guy who was in-charge of our orders were so loud! As if there were no customers around them. The food was not good this time too. The noodle of the soup was not cooked properly, there were shrimp shells on the soup. We even complained, but the waiter said oh they probably forgot to take it off. My husband's rice looks like a rice that was from the bottom of the rice cooker. The mint and the sprouts, looked were not fresh at all!

So much for good customer service and good food quality! To top it off, AGAIN, it took sooo long for them to get our bill and our to go boxes! NEVER AGAIN WILL WE EAT...

Bun Bo Hue is one of my favorite soups. Though the portion size was quite large (see my pic), and the price point wasn't awful, the broth was overly watered down, the noodles were too thin (I like thick noodles with Bun Bo Hue), and the cha lua was too soft. Still, the soup wasn't awful, just average, and nowhere near the taste/quality of the lemongrass beef pho (the closest comparison I can find in DC) at Simply Banh Mi. Based on the soup alone, as well as the service (which was great, as the server was very friendly and attentive), I would have given Viet Chopsticks between a 3 and 4 rating. Unfortunately, the banh mi sandwich I got to-go was truly awful, bringing this rating down to a 2. The sandwich bread was barely cut in half, which meant the filling only occupied about 1/3 of the bread space. The bread also was dry and nothing about the filling was interesting and seemed sloppily put together. Growing up in a half Vietnamese family, I'm pretty particular about my Vietnamese food, and I can undoubtedly say this was one of the worst banh mi sandwiches I have ever had.

I hope the restaurant takes into consideration the expectation that comes with ordering Orange Juice and seeing a machine with real oranges – customers anticipate a fresh juice. Regrettably, my experience was disappointing as the freshly squeezed Juice was diluted with water and sugar. Unlike some neighboring restaurants that offer genuine, freshly made Juice right before your eyes, this place falls short. It's important to be cautious of such establishments that not only misrepresent their product but also charge a premium for it. I will post pictures so you can see the difference.

Extensive menu, I was a bit hungry and I opted for a lemongrass bowl with rice noodles and a chicken banh mi. The banh mi had all the critical components; soft crusty bread, crunchy veggies and marinated chicken thigh... incredible!! I almost bought 2 to go! The lemongrass bowl was delicious and had all of the accompaniments, but was missing one thing..... lemongrass, the taste was savory, sweet, beef, fish sauce, chicken and ginger, but no lemongrass... would go again and have a banh mi bash!
