The pizza here was tasty, but that’s about where the positive stops. After we walked in we waited by the “please wait to be seated sign” for a few minutes as directed, but we had to approach the bar after awhile of not being greeted, although we could hear people around the corner and there were no other customers being helped at the time. After finally being greeted, they had to clean off one of the tables and we took a seat. One server brought water and said “your server will be with you shortly”. After waiting a few more minutes a different server brought our plates and silverware, but no mention of food. After waiting even more time for our server to take our order, we were finally forced to go back up to the bar again to ask when they would be taking our order, only to be told that we had to order via the online menu. We were not told this at any time before that. After looking over the menu even more, we decided to order some “mini” pizzas listed on their paper menu, but these options were not available online. For the third time we were forced to approach the bar and ask for assistance. At that time they informed us the paper menu was released at least two days too early and they could not place the order we wanted. After discussing different options we were finally able to create a custom order that resembled the minis listed on their menu. Before we got our pizza we were given two very small glasses and some water. I’m fine with the glasses being small but if that’s the case the refill rate needs to match the size. We were not asked once if we needed a refill even after the carafe and our glasses were empty. To add insult to injury, they did not have any bags to give us after boxing up our leftovers. The food was good but I’m not sure it’s...
Read moreWe recently tried Della Barba’s pizza, and it was a bad experience. We were bummed because we heard good things about this place. We came in on a Friday night around 9:10 pm, and it was pretty empty. They close at 10 pm. We ordered a Chicago style pizza and it was awful. The sauce was not seasoned, the dough was undercooked, and they forgot to add the red peppers. I asked the staff to exchange it for another type of pizza. I realized it was getting late in the evening, so we were willing to exchange it for anything they could cook quickly. We would have been happy to take it to go. We recognize the challenges the service industry is facing, and we do not want to make it more difficult for any restaurant and their staff. Of course, they refused, so I asked for my money back. We had not eaten much of the pizza because it wasn’t good. Normally, I would not ask for my money back, but the pizza was expensive and not edible. The pizza cost $30 and then another $6 for sparkling water plus tax. One of the staff had to call the manager, who was not on site. I thought that was odd. Maybe if the manager had been on site, there would be more quality control. Of course, he said no and we had to eat the expense. I typically do not write reviews. However, I find in DC that food has become increasingly expensive whether it’s a pizza place or fine dining or takeout or dine-in. The quality of food and service is not in alignment with the expense. We are happy to pay for good food and service and we tip 20% or higher. We work hard for our money and we are tired of throwing money down the toilet and leaving restaurants hungry. I hope that Della Barba was just having a bad night and they become more consistent in...
Read moreWe were in DC last weekend and my husband mentioned he was really craving deep dish pizza. After much time spent researching online we settled on Della Barba and we are so glad we did. As soon as we walked in the owner greeted us and told us all about the various styles of pizza he makes and the in depth differences. He is very passionate about what he does and we enjoyed talking with him and learning about all things pizza. We ordered 2 mini deep dish- 1 with sausage and onion and the other with mushroom and olives, 1 detroit and 1 slice of Nonna as we wanted to try different styles. ( I thoroughly still regret not also getting a NY style as well) Being foodies, we can honestly say that all were absolutely delicious in their own different ways. I am not as much of a pizza person as my husband and when we do eat or make pizza it is usually thin crust and wood fired. Well let me tell you when we dove into the detroit on our 5 hour car ride home we wished we had gotten several more. It was heaven. The cheese, the carmelization, the dough, the sauce- everything was so fresh and just outstanding. Same with the deep dish and the Nonna. The sausage was the freshest and best we have ever had and the mushrooms were so good and plentiful. Not something that is easy to find. You can tell that everything is made with fresh, high quality ingredients which is worth everything in our book. Oh- and the chocolate chip cookie fresh and warm from the oven was a bonus. I am not sure when we will be back in DC but we will definitely be back to Della Barba when we are. If you want amazing pizza with simple quality ingredients than you need to try...
