Retro Donuts is pretty close to home for us which is the only reason we ever go. They have a great specialty option, the Gigi - that is, if you can ever get one. We've been many times and they were out almost every time. Today's trip was around 8 AM on a Sunday for reference, so not a situation of being sold out at noon on a Thursday.
We asked if they had it this morning and with a scowl were told no. I don't know what my family did to offend these ladies working today, but everything we said or asked was met with attitude. We felt rushed to make our selection and get out despite being the only customers present.
We ended up getting a pour over coffee, a chocolate milk, a vanilla sprinkle donut, and a bagel breakfast sandwich. The coffee and chocolate milk were the best part. The donut, not dissimilar to the rest of the selection, was a standard iced donut with nothing to write home about. The same standard donut you could get at the grocery store or gas station for a third of the price (this was $3 for a single donut). The breakfast bagel sandwich was undercooked and cold.
We've been to Retro many times and each time say it will be the last. The poor, overpriced selection (not even a single filled donut in a specialty donut shop?) can usually be made up for is usually made up for with the cute retro atmosphere, good drinks, and excellent service. That service, the last saving grace to the shadow of what this place used to be, is now gone and we will not be giving it another chance.
Go to Yokes for a better selection, better prices, and better service. Casual Friday is another choice with the premium price point, but options beyond what is offered at a gas...
Read moreThese folks know how to make a donut/doughnut/whatever. They’ve got a great selection of various delectables and have even branched out, recently (1/2018), with a new items near and dear to my Texas heart: kolaches!
Well, they call them Czechums, and they’re not quite kolaches (if you’re a native Texan, such as myself, you know what this is and how central to eating like a Texan kolaches are), but they’re close. The dough is nearly perfect, and the internal yummy is divine.
Besides that, they gave some great coffee and a baker’s dozen offered.
They’re a bit off the road but, as the sign inside says, “if the lights are in, we’re open!” Get there early so you don’t miss out on their delicious yummy-ness - they run thin later in the morning.
And, the folks you meet inside are always so very friendly, patient (you’ll appreciate this as you stare at the not-so-absurd selection), and very helpful. There’s only been one time the owner wasn’t there — he’s a hulleva nice guy!
Seriously, best donuts AND kolaches this side of the Red...
Read moreI have been to retro twice and have found their donuts to be fresh and very tasty (at least from the ones I've tried). Our church group has done "FUNdraising" through them and it was definitely a unique and beneficial way to contribute to summer camp funds. They allowed the kids to participate by folding boxes, holding signs, opening doors, etc. It seemed fitting for the age of kids and the business was very welcoming. In particular, even though the donuts ARE pricier than bigger store donuts, they are worth it. I can only eat one so eating ONE really tasty donut for $2 bucks is worth it to me. Their filled doughnuts are fantastic and the original glazed and fritters are really good too. My kids enjoy the basic chocolate m&m and the maple bars. The shop is clean and filled with lots of light. The coffee is made fresh in front of you. Its not espresso but its tasty and I'm not there for a $5 coffee anyway. They usually have different new donuts, so if you go more often, you can try...
