Ever since falling in love with proper Hawaiian poke a few years ago, I've been on the hunt for good (semi-) traditional Hawaiian food that doesn't come with a $1K plane ticket. Tiki Taco has absolutely filled this niche with their poke; unlike the poke we generally find on mainland US, their poke just has rice and fish. The hot, slightly sticky rice pairs perfectly with the huge chunks of cool salmon or tuna, flavored with a variety of mix-ins. I usually opt for their traditional blend, but it does err a touch salty, so I would recommend bringing a bottle of water with you or ordering their Hawaiian shaved ice to round out the meal.
While I originally came to Tiki Taco for their poke, their namesake, the tacos, is just as exciting; they have a wide variety of tasty fusion tacos that are just absolutely massive. Each taco is probably a meal in and of itself, but each one is so amazing that it's impossible to stop at just one. I'm especially fond of their shrimp tacos, but you honestly can't go wrong with any of them.
And if you have a sweet tooth, their malasadas (Hawaiian donuts) are a wonderful way to end the meal; they're fried to golden perfection, but are gloriously soft and pillowy on the inside. The donuts go perfectly with their rich dark chocolate sauce, which is decadent but not overly sweet.
All in all, truly can't recommend this hole-in-the-wall spot enough! The food is simple yet delicious, and the staff is remarkably friendly and helpful! If you're craving a quick / easy bite or just want to experience a little bit of Hawaii, definitely recommend giving...
Read moreHands down my go to place for interesting, tasty and authentic tacos. Great location in DuPont and awesome visibility from the street... yellow and red signs! Love how the owner lived 6 years in Hawaii and when he had to return to the dc / nova area he decided to bring Hawaian tacos and shaved ice To dc... thank you!! The chips are to die for! It's like a mix of of corn flour and pita chips. I honestly ate the entire bowl. Queso was pipping hot and truly queso. Not floury like chipotles and not fake like Tostitos. The CHICKEN WINGS. We got the blue cheese wings. So so good. I think I'd come to tiki just for the wings. Meat fell off the bone. For tacos we got the Kailua pork, jerk chicken and fish. The pork also fell apart in my mouth and I loved the spicy mayo drizzle on the fish ones. Can't forget about the poke! It tasted super fresh and the mango pieces added a super nice fruity taste that complemented the savory dish. Last but not least we had the shaved ice! So colorful and bursting with flavor! Can't wait to return. Awesome location for a quick lunch... forget about chipotle tiki Taco is...
Read moreYou’re welcome in advance for telling you about one of the yummiest places in Dupont. Located on 2010 P Street NW, Tiki Taco is one of those hole-in-the-wall that make all your dreams come true. Their food’s super fresh, super affordable, and super effing delicious.
They specialize in three menu items: tacos, pokes, and wings. If you like sashimi, their shoyu ahi poke ($12) is a must-try. It was prepared with Maui sweet onions, scallions, soy sauce, and sesame, and it was exquisite. Also make sure to get an order of their wings - they're cheap and super flavorful! I tried them in Jerky Blue, and it's heaven for blue cheese lovers. Their spiced pineapple flavor sounds dope though.
And last but not least, their tacos - these were everything and then some. My favorite was their Crispy Sesame Tofu (with green papaya salad, toasted coconut, and sweet chili sauce), but their Kalbi Beef (with sesame watercress namul and hoisin crema) was also delicious.
Pro tip: save room for dessert because they have shaved ice here with pretty much every flavor imaginable, lol. Happy...
