We (wife, two sons and me) stopped in here for dinner while on our way home to TN from a NC day trip. We'd searched several areas, trying to find a sit-down restaurant that wasn't a big chain or fast food restaurant... and, that was open, with social distancing. Angelo's fit the bill.
To start with, in a day and time when social distancing is the norm, Angelo's was right on top of things with distancing between tables and staff masked up for everyone's safety. In between customers, staff could be seen cleaning and sanitizing. Condiments were not on each individual table, but were available upon request. For this alone, they get an A+ for covid-19 preparedness.
This is also a good time to talk about the wait staff. Our waitress, her name was Jade, was alert and attentive to our needs throughout our meal. She was on top of our drinks and our cups never emptied. She didn't exceptional job taking care of us.
The food. We started our meal with an appetizer of garlic balls. It's a good thing I ordered the 12 serving size ($7) as they disappeared almost as quickly as they got to the table. Hot out of the oven, they were crusty on the outside but soft and gooey on the inside drizzled with garlic butter and served with a side of red sauce.
Our pickiest eater, 9-year-old son, chose a two-topping individual pizza ($6) from the children's menu. He chose pepperoni and cheese as his two toppings. This kid never eats the crust on his pizzas at home. But, on this evening there wasn't a crumb left on his plate at the end of the meal. Along with three of the garlic balls, he dunked the crust into the red sauce from the appetizer, and ate every bite. He washed his meal down with a sizable white milk.
Our other son, he's 13-years-old, argues with us every time we go out to eat, when we ask him to consider a meal from the children's menu before turning to the adult menu. Tonight was no exception. He conceded to a child's menu grilled chicken Alfredo on fettuccine meal ($6.50), as long as he could eat some of the pizza which I had ordered for myself. He, too, had eaten his share of garlic balls prior to our meal arriving at the table. His meal came in a large bowl with his side of bread. At the conclusion of his meal his bowl was empty and he never even touched my pizza. The portion size for this meal looked like a regular adult portion. The remaining alfredo sauce was quickly sopped up with yet another garlic ball. He enthusiastically raved about how good it was, and how full he was. This was one of those rare occasions that we allowed him to have a soda for dinner. He took full advantage of our waitress keeping his Pepsi filled to the brim throughout the evening.
My wife chose the calzone ($13) which gave her the option of choosing up to five items as a filling. She selected sausage, pepperoni, onions green peppers, and roasted red peppers. Her calzone came with a bowl of red sauce. We never saw the oven which is used to cook pizzas and calzones, but the crust told us that they were using a real pizza oven rather than the conveyor type ovens that so many other places use these days. After her own portion of garlic balls, she finished off half of the calzone, leaving the other half for a future meal, or a midnight snack for me. The calzone was excellent!
I chose a large 'house special' pizza ($18). It came covered with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions & mushrooms. The real mozzarella cheese covered everything and was oven baked to a golden brown. Now, don't judge me. Remember that my son, the 13-year-old food disposal, was supposed to help me eat it. As it was, I was able to polish off about half of the pie myself. Angelo's cuts their pizzas into squares, which fits with my habit of eating pizza with a fork and knife. And, as I mentioned before, the crust was perfect, coming from the oven. The toppings were tender but crisp. The red sauce was incredibly tasty and perfectly balanced with the amount of toppings and cheese.
Overall the experience was great. The ticket was $66 and we can't wait to get back...
Read moreI am a little surprised by all the reviews stating Angelo's is the best pizza in Waynesville. Much as 1+1=2, the plain fact of the matter is that Doughboy's just down the road does. There's no animosity in that statement, it's just true is all. In fact, Doughboy's has superior pizza not just in Waynesville, but it is comparable to the best pizza joints in the country. The citizens of Waynesville are fortunate for this. To highlight this I point out one of several reasons these things are true: the crust. Pizza is all about the crust, if it's about anything. The crust of Doughboy's pizza? of a slice of pizza from Doubhboy's?...you wanna eat it. The crust of a slice of pizza from Angelo's?...you don't. The crust of pizza from Angelo's is tasteless dry...plain white dough. Not entirely crucial but nevertheless notable...Angelo's cuts pizza into squares, not triangular slices. This is a tired idea that needs to stop. Unless you have an end piece, eating square pieces of pizza is awkward and messy. Square pieces of pizza...from the middle of the pizza...flop all over the place. Why do people still cut pizza into squares??? Why? Anyway... I went to Angelos' the day after Thanksgiving. I'd intended to go to Doughboy's but it was packed out the door with people waiting for a table. So I and my friends decided to try Angelo's. I had Angelo's "Meatsa" pizza (which was cut into tiny squares). They have other specialty pizzas. But nothing from Angelo's compares to Doughboy's. It just doesn't. Not in quality or otherwise. From my experience, the employees at Angelo's are fine and hard workers. But it just doesn't make sense to go there for pizza, when it is no where NEAR...as good as the pizza from Doughboy's. It just isn't. It is, in fact, not that good at all. I'd say it's no better than DiGiorno's frozen. At least, that's what it...
Read moreLast night was our date night for my wife and I. We decided to try out this restaurant. It would be our first - last time there. We were seated by the main door. Across from the check out. Our waiter "Christian" took our order. We got our dinner rolls and drinks. Another 45 minutes goes by still no food. He comes to the table and tells us the printer went out so the kitchen didn't get the order. Then the manager comes over and tells us she apologized and he forgot to put the order in. Another 15 minutes go by and nobody is saying anything. I go to the front and explain that we are hungry should we go somewhere else. They then tell me it will be another 15 minutes before our food is ready. They were putting a rush on it. We didn't feel the need to continue to wait. I'm not sure if this happens often. We ended up leaving without having dinner there. No one tried to make it right. The waiter didn't offer an apology. We drove over to Fat buddies BBQ. Explained our experience over at The Angelo's restaurant. They (BBQ) staff took us in sat us down. Brought our appetizers and drinks over had a complimentary salad some Brunswick stew made everything right and our food was brought to us shortly thereafter she ended up getting the $30 tip. So if you want good food and great service I recommend Fat buddies BBQ. Live & Learn. I couldn't tell you if the food at Angelo's was any good as we never got to it. Not very good customer service Angelo's. Two...
