We ate at the Glass Onion in downtown Weaverville recently on a whim around 5 pm, not thinking we would have any sort of special experience. So often these days, you go out to eat at a restaurant that 'purports itself' to be amazing.... and while there might be one or two items at best that are pretty decent, there is often "something" that just wasn't right. Maybe it was the service, maybe it was the noise, maybe the other meal choices were just not that great, maybe the quality of the meal just didn't measure up to its cost. The Glass Onion runs circles around all these other places. From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. The staff were so kind and they made us feel like celebrities. We sat outside across from the town clock and the ambiance was lovely and peaceful. We ordered the sauteed kale, the Gnocci entree, the tomato-corn bisque soup, and the trout entree. Because I'm not a fan of capers, the staff created some other alternative sauce for my trout and it was lovely. For desert, we ordered the Ricotta cake. Let me just say, every single dish was made in house from scratch and was so beyond delicious that it was hard to put the fork down. The plating presentation was simple, yet elegant.... and it was clear that very deliberate thought, as well as a labor of love, was put into every dish. I'm not a food critic, yet I am pretty highly critical of restaurants and I've been to all the best restaurants in every major city in the U.S. The Glass Onion is quite possibly one of the best restaurants in Western North Carolina. For going to the Glass Onion on a whim, I was more than pleasantly surprised. I was wowed. To top it all off, the staff are humble. It is clear they just want their diners to love their food, and it shows. Don't hesitate to go. Oh, and we took a lovely walk in the beautiful town nature trail just across the street to burn some calories. The restaurant experience at the Glass Onion in Weaverville, NC combined with the walk in nature trail afterwards rounded out the experience as the perfect date and...
Read moreThis past Saturday (6/8/24) I attended Glass Onion with 7 other ladies for a nice dinner while celebrating my bachelorette. We and high hopes for this establishment after looking at the menu because I love good quality of food.
Upon arriving we were promptly sat and had no wait for our reservation. We were greeted very friendly. Tim our server (I believe Tim was his name) was phenomenal. We order drinks, appetizers, entrees, & a couple people ordered dessert.
On the menu it states a check can only be split into 3 bills. This was not a problem for Tim as he was more than accommodating! I saw that he had to individually write every bill out. I think on the establishments end there could be a more efficient way to go about this. I believe this should also be listed on the website.
I ordered the Elderberry Fizz, The House-Made Blue Cheese Dressing Salad, and the House made Fettuccini w/ Organic Roasted Chicken. My pasta was mediocre. I did very much enjoy the artichoke hearts in it though. I just thought it was lacking in some way. I thought the portioning was appreciable. I loved the rolls as well. 3/5 ~ food
Our service was great besides feeling very rushed. There was constant pre-bussing and I felt like it was an in-and-out meal. I feel if it wasn't so rushed we would have had a better time. 4/5 ~ service
A couple of things my friends had to say was that the Grilled Scottish Salmon w/ Creamed Leeks was perfect & very delicious. Another friend really enjoyed her Angel Hair w/ Fresh Shrimp, Sausage & Zucchini meal.
I don't think I would back come here with a party larger than 4. I hope this...
Read moreFirst, wait staff excellent, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Would give 6 stars if possible.
Secondly, we love the restaurant. It is warm and inviting.
Thirdly, the food was disappointing. The appetizers were underwhelming. The bruschetta was expensive, 12 for two small pieces, calamari was not crisp and the seasoning was unappreciated, did not discern any chef creativity.
Salads, the beet pear salad was good, despite the description. Bosc pears were in the description although it was served with Bartlett or green Anjou. The pears were sweet and juicy but not the ones listed on the menu. The shrimp soup was just ok. A bit of sherry would have elevated it.
The main courses were adequate, but again not great, with the exception of the butternut squash ravioli. The pasta and the sauce were sublime. Other entrees included the salmon, boar bolognese and gnocchi with duck sausage.
The big disappointment was the special, double cut pork chop with date sauce, broccoli rabe and polenta. The polenta description was why I chose the dish. It had among other tasty treats shishito peppers. The chop was cooked well, a bit too done for my liking but fine, the date sauce was abundantly spread over the chop. It was grainy I think if possible to strain the texture would be improved. The polenta was a disaster. It was a gloppy, congealed mess that was warm at best. The rabe was good.
We had three bottles of a very good 45 wine.
This was our first time under the new owners. We will be back because we want to support our...
