Three things sprang to mind with this coffee shop. 1) It's called Gaslight. 2) The industrial-style decor is very old Chicago. 3) Gorgeous location. Milwaukee Avenue is a busy area. It is also replete with old buildings — an excellent place to go if you want to gawk at the old Chicago architecture. (Do people gawk at old buildings, or is it just me?) You also get a view of Downtown Chicago and its many skyscrapers. You will appreciate the stark difference between the modern architecture and the old one. But enough of the city itself. Gaslight Coffee Roasters is a great place to go for beautifully crafted coffee and espresso. The coffee has a nutty, toasty taste that truly stands out. Yum! I'll have to dabble with a variety of blends to be able to match the unique taste of their coffee. You also get an awesome lunch menu to go with your java. The location is great! Loved the exposed brick. Loved the overall atmosphere. Great place to work, read, or stare out into the city (if you're lucky enough to get a window seat). Downsides? The bone-chilling arctic breeze. Brrrrr... I can't feel my fingers! The gloves don't help! Not the coffee shop's fault, but still. I definitely...
Read moreThe AMBIENCE Very funky looking place. Really random stuffed animals around from a duck to a rabbit decorate the place. The place is not crazy packed and ample street parking around. It seems somewhat hip but I really think the high school chairs should be changed out into something a little nicer. Was kind of strange that they write orders with a sharpie on the counter.
The FOOD.
DRINK I had a decent tree called the really green tea which I thought was green tea but looked super green. Did not taste like green tea and it was ok.
EAT I had their house special for breakfast. I was bummed they didn’t serve the lunch before 11 but it was still pretty good. It was a piece of bread with goat cheese I think topped with bacon and an egg. I had no idea how to eat it without it turning into a crazy mess. It also came with a salad with some sliced cumquats. Overall it seemed ok - I don’t think the bread part is really needed - it kind of made it hard to eat.
The SERVICE The line was fairly short on a Sunday morning and the tea made it out in seconds but the sandwich was more like 15+ min. Everyone was really nice and friendly. Overall pretty chill place and would love to try...
Read moreSince Gaslight opened it's been my favorite third wave coffee roaster in the Logan Square area. Their beans are delicious and the baristas make delicious drinks. When they opened in 2012, they were the only place in the area to get an outstanding pour over coffee. They have only gotten better since. During my current visit I tried their tea for the first time. Also, perfectly brewed and delicious. They don't throw a tea bag in a cup of hot water, so order with the expectation to wait 5 minutes for your tea. I buy their beans from time to time and have never been disappointed. The staff has always been friendly.
Being on an angled corner makes the availability of seating a little limited but there are large windows that bring in light and great views of the Blue Line rolling by. One minor flaw with this place is that the window seats do get hot on sunny days. As you might expect, they have free WiFi and some outlets so it's a good place to get some work or reading done.
Overall, I give five stars for the drinks and staff, but four stars for the cafe itself which...
