Roots is an interesting place. What they do well, they do really well. But, looks like shrinkflation has finally gotten to them too. :(

You can never go wrong with their mozzarella sticks. Pricey, but you're getting a novelty item in a way. Worth it.

As many mention, their pizzas can be hit or miss and are pretty overpriced for that reason. Personally, the butter chicken pizza is my favorite and when it's done right, like it was the other night when I ordered it to go, it is kinda perfect! But, sometimes, when delivered it could make it to you a little floppy.

The build your own salad. Not the thing you'd think of right away when going out for pizza, but let me tell you this thing was their best item on the menu in terms of quality and bang for your buck. Not so anymore. They recently significantly reduced their take out salad bowl size and kept the same pricing structure. Was pretty disappointed to find this out after getting home with it, thinking it was going to be enough to split and it wasn't. Still "worth" it, because it's still quality ingredients, but not nearly the deal it was before. I used to order a salad for pickup from them without a thought or care in the world. Now, they'll be competing with Sweet green and other higher priced, smaller sized salad places when I think about ordering in the future.

If you like root beer, they make...

Fantastic landmark in the neighborhood.

First off the pizza. The dough is King here. Malty and sweet, everything on the menu that had their pizza dough in it should be part of your order. That includes the fold over sandwiches and my personal favorite, the bread bowl for the soup. Pizza comes super cheesey, sausage is a fine crumble, always excellent. Pizza is cut by default in Long strips vertically and once across middle horizontally. Ask for regular cut if that is an issue to you.

Second, the bar program. 15 drafts of great local beers, always changing and wide variety. Excellent whiskey selection with a broad range of private single barrel selections like old Weller antique, four Roses, Buffalo Trace, eagle rare, and wild turkey Kentucky spirit.

Third, the mozzarella sticks. Homemade bricks of cheese, fried perfectly and gooey. Must order item.

Forth, the salads. Giant selection of build your salads with near endless toppings. If ordering online, remember they are literal, if you don't select a lettuce, it might not come with any. The goddess and South West salads are fantastic.

The pizza delivers well, but if always best dining in.

They are very family friendly with changing tables, family bathrooms, high chairs, even a family Nye party from 5-730pm.

I cannot recommend this place...

Two adults and four teenage kids had a great meal here. A few notes that might help you with ordering: The salads are very large. You never know whether a $10-12 salad will be skimpy or generous. In this case, if the salad is your main course, know that it's plenty big. If you plan to order pizza too, consider splitting a salad with someone. There is a nice quirky selection of draft beers. But, depending on the beer you order, your portion may be very small. If you are looking for a full pint of beer, know that some beers are served in what seemed to be roughly 8-ounce pours. The kids loved the root beer. Roots apparently bottles their own. The pizzas are big! The smaller pizza is described as appropriate for 1-2 people. But I think it could easily be appropriate for 3 people (especially if they are getting salads as well). The large pizza was great for the 4 kids. In all, our party of 6 ate a small and a large pizza and 2 salads.

The service was nice: prompt and attentive. We were seated quickly (around 8:30 on a Thursday night), and everything was good from...

The restaurant has a lively sports bar atmosphere, perfect for catching a game or hanging out with friends. The crowd was laid-back and it never felt too packed, so you can enjoy your time without feeling overwhelmed. Service was impressively quick, keeping things smooth and efficient. If you're a cheese lover, the cheese sticks are a must-try. They're loaded with gooey, melted cheese, and every bite leaves your mouth full of rich, cheesy goodness. It's definitely the standout item on the menu. However, the rest of the food falls short of expectations. While not bad, there's nothing particularly memorable about the other dishes, especially considering the higher price point. For what they charge, you'd expect a bit more quality and flavor in their offerings. Overall, it's a good spot for a fun night out, but maybe not the best value if you're looking for a standout meal.

I have always loved Roots for their pizza and very generously sized appetizers. I work nearby and decided to try their salads since many people have recommended them. I did hold a reservation for their salads because of the price points ($14-$16)!!! When I saw the Sesame Chicken Salad on the menu I was so eager to try it based on the description and photos I saw on google. The salad was definitely NOT worth $16 (after tax). Serving size was literally average sized salad that you can get a Portillos or Panera. The dressing was a creamy peanut sauce (see photo) and not a Vinaigrette as described on the menu. Highly disappointed in this, use those $16 towards the pizza. .

My husband and I had lunch at Roots in West Town, Chicago, during the CHIditarod, a fun event for a good cause—Chicago’s epic urban shopping cart race and charity food drive. We ordered the Korean fried chicken pizza and the Not a Carrot in the World salad. The pizza was delicious, flavorful but not too spicy, and the fresh salad paired nicely with the heavier pizza dish. The salad had delicious mango and avocado and a refreshing carrot tahini dressing. The server was friendly too. During our visit, we saw the CHIditarod contestants’ decked out shopping carts which was a delightful experience, and the restaurant/bar was full of life with a great DJ!
