I would give them 0 stars if it existed
Me and my best friend walked in here on a Saturday around brunch- they were busy but not drowning in service there was two tables open in the front by the window a two top and a four top- a staff member greeted and gestured to the general area to take a seat- since he did not specify we decided to take the four top by the window away from other tables. I honestly was confused as to who our server was there was like 4 different people trying to take our order in short time span. The staff seemed unknowledgeable about the menu because anytime I asked a question they looked extremely confused. We needed some time to look at the menu but none of the servers came back around and we had to call over a server. The food was absolutely unimpressive and not worth the price. I could honestly do better in my own kitchen. I ordered the pan potato’s and the chicken curry salad sandwich. The potatoes looked sad it was four tiny round tomatoes sliced in half place on a plate and drenched in mustard. The presentation was absolutely horrible and not worth the price point. The sandwich had a hair in it as well(see picture attached) when I told the waitress she just said “oh” didn’t apologize or offer to fix it. I had to ask her to comp it and thankfully she did. Not to mention before that she made us move and split the four top- the way she approached the situation was passive aggressive and uncaring and she didn’t even help us move the table. As someone who works in the hospitality industry this was extremely frustrating to deal with such poor service. Not to mention she gave us another tables check when we wanted to pay- I didn’t even notice until after we left and I was looking at the receipt. I DO NOT...
Read moreI really want to continue to like this place, but I just can't anymore. The atmosphere and service have just gotten so bad. As things have returned to normal after 2 years post pandemic, Same Day Cafe refuses any attempt to return to normal and it's very off-putting. They are still checking vaccine cards even though the city lifted this mandate over a month ago. OK, fine it's a private business, that's their right if they choose, I don't have a problem with that. However, they force you to wait outside until the singe person working the entire cafe has time to come over to the window and buzz you in thru the locked front door. Seriously? Feels like being let into a prison or liquor store in a sketchy neighborhood. Next, crammed into a table sandwiched between two hard plastic dividers with barely even enough room to stand-up/sit down at the table. Feels like your eating inside a plastic animal enclosure. Next, no menus, all ordering has to be done though an app, where you have to fill out all your personal info, email, phone etc, and then manually enter your credit card info before your allowed to place an order. Then all the food is served in either a cardboard to-go container, or a plastic basket lined with paper along with plastic utensils . My eggs soaked thru the paper and got stuck in the plastic basket leaving me to pick through the mess.
This used to be one of my favorite neighborhood spots. Their food is great. I really want to like eating here, but just can't because they refuse to embrace any attempt to return to any semblance of normalcy. It's very off-putting, and I'd honestly rather support local restaurants that are making an effort to return to...
Read moreThis past Saturday I found this fun, playful cafe quite by happenstance. My uber driver dropped me one full city block away from the Logan kenzie blue line and I was daydreaming about having a milkshake when lo and behold I walk past this cute outside picnic bench patio set up and there's a chalkboard sign inviting people to try their famous milkshakes. Well I didn't need too much convincing and it's always wise to follow signs so I took a seat outside on the communal picnic bench and took less than three minutes after perusing the menu to select a thick cut gouda grilled cheese sandwich and gourmet coffee milkshake. My server was extremely busy on Saturday but she truly listened and my meal was satisfying and flavorful. I went here a second time this past Tuesday and this time I chose a chocolate phosphate and blt. I was just as happy and extremely impressed with the way my phosphate was prepared and this has to be the very best chocolate phosphate I've ever had. Today marks my third visit and I chose a combination of two heart healthy salad sides and a warm biscuit with jam and butter to the side. I decided upon the wild cherry phosphate soda and enjoyed more people watching on the communal picnic bench. It's summer in Chicago again so I strongly recommend this charming and friendly cafe/diner to anyone who appreciates traditional, handmade drinking sodas, iced coffees, shakes and decadent sandwiches with zesty flavors. This is my new favorite restaurant and all the customers who come here are super friendly just like the owner and staff...
