My gosh, that was a pretty glorious sandwich.
I do agree there is a lack of meat, but the overall taste makes up for it.
Rimimi - is the porchetta sandwich. I was not a fan of gorgonzola so had swapped it for the pamigiano. That turned out to be one of my best sandwich I tasted for the year ❤️
Riccioni - I asked to have the parmigiano with truffle cream, it was underwhelming. Pretty much the sun-dried tomatoes dominated the taste.
Viale Priscuitto di Parma ($20). I replaced the gorgonzola with parmigiano cream.. it was probably the best I had so far. The sweet jam , the crunchy pistachio blends so well with the rest of the savory , creamy sandwich.
The Viale Guanciale - I swapped the gorgonzola with parmesan cream. The sandwich had a stronger sweet taste to it than the other sandwiches I had before. Be aware, the guanciale is intensely salty.
Diva - the stratiatella and mortadella (bologna) combo was the one with the most neutral taste of all the sandwiches I had here. I barely tasted the mortadella out of the sandwich. This was my least favorite one so far.
Savoy - Bressaola (cured beef) adds a more intense savory flavor to the sandwich. The grilled tomatoes does adds some tartness to the total taste. My thought it the sandwich was overall a bit dry. I was not a fan of the comte’ cheese. Not a super fan of this sandwich.
Di Parma - this is the most expensive of all the sandwich. It is also richest and heaviest one. The burrata and arugula both contribute to the symphony of texture that is quite delightful. There is a strong scent of truffle though the scent does not translate to the flavor as much. The sandwich itself carries a bit of a heavier saltiness. As good as the core ingredients are, it just felt a little extreme taste wise .. and price. Now that I’ve tried it, I’ll prob skip this next time.
Verona - that was one good balanced sandwich sprinkles of salt, sun-dried tomatoes were not tart like I had with Riccioni. The burrata complimented the other ingredients really well. One drawback is it is $26 - a bit pricey.
Parking here btw is a biatch. I went at 4 ish pm Sunday and there was still a 20 minutes line.
Update, went on a Tuesday afternoon around 4pm ish. No lines!...
Read moreI’d been wanting to go to Mamie for so long. The outside looked so cozy, and being on the corner of Fairfax and Santa Monica…you can’t really go wrong, right? Turns out you can.
It was my friend’s last weekend in LA after being terribly sick and deciding to go back home for a recharge. I suggested we go to Mamie’s for some coffee and maybe a brunch bite—it was around 11.
I’m not sure what did it, but the minute I asked this server if their “Verona” was a coffee, she just… laughed. It wasn’t marked clearly, so it could’ve been anything. She looked like she’d just gotten out of bed, and honestly, a bit tired—so I tried to lighten the mood and said, “Yeah, so funny, right?” She didn’t even look at me. Just said, “So, just coffee?” We said yes.
Once we sat down, she kept glancing over at us and laughing quietly to herself—like she was mocking us. It wasn’t until she overheard our conversation that I think something clicked. My friend was talking about how mean people can be in LA, and how exhausted she was from it.
I felt awful. I was the one who brought her here, and the experience only proved her point.
I’m writing this because I hope it reminds anyone reading that you’re interacting with humans. Humans who feel. You never know what kind of day someone is having.
So please—be kind. Especially if your job is to talk to people all day.
I don’t think I’ll go back, even though I’ll miss out on their paninis. Because a kind heart and attitude should...
Read moreThis place just didn't quite do it for me.
I loved walking into the store and getting hit with that insanely amazing aroma of the fresh focaccia constantly coming out of the oven.
Line went by fairly fast but the one cashier is incredibly rude and has horrible customer service. I didn't get her name but she was the only black female working at the time I went in. No greeting, no "how are you", not even asking if I wanted anything else. And while waiting for my sandwich, she was the same towards everyone. Half the time she just stood there without acknowledging anyone so you didn't even know if you could order yet.
Another big issue - no A/C. It was hot in LA. But it was even hotter inside Mamie. All the outdoor tables were taken so I was COOKING inside while eating. I had to eat that sandwich fast because I was just sweating through my clothes.
I ordered the Rimini ($21) which had Porchetta, crema di gorgonzola, truffled cream, spicy roasted eggplant, baby arugula.
The focaccia is the highlight by far. I would buy just the focaccia alone. But the rest of the sandwich is just okay. The porchetta was thinly sliced and savory but so little of it that you almost couldn't taste it. The eggplants were rubbery, chewy, and bitter. The cheeses were creamy, light, and refreshing. The arugular was fresh. But overall, the sandwich just didn't quite make me feel like wanting...
