This was our second time staying at The Charlie, so we thought we knew what to expect. The grounds are lovely, the secure parking is very convenient, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, so it really pains me to write this review.
We travel with our dog; she has a heart condition and cannot be boarded. We stayed at The Charlie with her back in August 2022, had a lovely time and decided to return again last weekend (October 2022). Although the hotel checks with you weeks before you arrive to ask your arrival time, as well as the day before to confirm, we were never told that we would be charged a “non-refundable deposit” of $250 for bringing our dog to stay with us until the moment of check-in. After leaving I discovered that a series of taxes were also added on top of that “non-refundable deposit”, making the cost of bringing our dog with us for a single night nearly $300.
We made the reservation directly through the hotel website and included information about our dog both times we made a reservation (so they were aware ahead of time that we would be arriving with a dog). Our dog caused no disturbance or issue during our stay. And we were not charged this exorbitant fee last time we stayed, so it really blindsided us.
We’ve traveled extensively with our dog, and are used to paying a pet fee or (refundable) pet deposit. But I have never encountered a situation (until now) where such a high fee is charged, and also NOT DISCLOSED until after you arrive.
Please don’t make the same mistake we did. If you search, you’ll see other reviews talking about frivolous fees and charges, assessed arbitrarily, due to the whims of management. What we experienced is truly the opposite of hospitality — it was deceitful, predatory and...
Read moreWe heard about The Charlie from an acquaintance. Had to be in WeHo for a visit and reserved 2 nights on line. The small boutique is well located but perfectly hidden on a small residential street between SM and Melrose - secure gated entry, easy car park, and we're in. Received an upgrade and the room, the Gloria, was smashing - adorable and quaint, imagine your own Hollywood bungalow in a garden setting with smart, stylish details including a pic on the wall of Bogie, Bacall at a table with MM stepping over to visit. Love the room, the location. No food or bar on site, and the fd closes at 6.
The only issue for us was the front desk and no food or bar. Then, we found an IG post the day we checked in offering a 3 for 2, same days we took 2 nights. We called in to extend our stay and asked for courtesy on the 3 for 2. Nope. Only available on IG - asked manager to consider - nope, sorry, for IG customers only. No "so sorry, we could offer something next visit," no "spoke to the owner and could offer you a discount for the 3rd", just no, you made the mistake of booking on-line. Left a "we care about new potential guests more than a current paying guest" attitude. The price is lux, the room was adorable, the attitude was discount. Cold, short and left us with a "too bad" tude. Loved the quaint hotel but will be searching for one with a better attitude for our next stay....
Read moreAs other reviews have detailed, the two women who work at the check in are absolutely awful, they also charge a non-refundable pet deposit of 250 which is mentioned nowhere on Booking .com, and as another guest mentioned, even if you tell them ahead of time they’ll only notify you at check in. We were originally given a very run down room next to the road (completely does not look like photos) and a loud buzzing gate. We asked if there were other rooms, and were given a “free” upgrade (that we never asked for and would have paid for it, but gratefully accepted). When we went to check out, my fiancé was scolded for supposedly parking incorrectly. This was not only untrue, but no one called or left a note underneath our door, if they did, we most certainly would have done whatever was asked of us. No missed calls and never have had an issue with a hotel unable to get ahold of us. When my fiancé stood up for herself after being unfairly scolded, the front desk very rudely said “Well I hope you liked your free upgrade.” When I confronted her for how she spoke to my fiancé, she played dumb. Back to The Prospect Hotel for us, where hospitality exists and the rooms are much nicer, I highly recommend them both to avoid interacting with these women who repeatedly treat their hotel guests with disdain, rudeness and complete hostility, lacking any hospitality skills...
