Today at noon, I went to this Japanese restaurant on campus with my friend. As we walked in, I noticed several tables were occupied with 2 ppl on the couch seats. When we arrived, there happened to be some empty seats on the couch, so we asked if we could sit there. However, a middle-aged male server refused to let us sit there, claiming that those seats were reserved for a larger group that would be coming later (even though there was no one waiting behind us, and the tables weren't reserved). What was even more frustrating was that at the time, there were two or three other tables with two people sitting on the couch seats (belonging to different ethnicities). I felt very uncomfortable in that situation, regardless of whether the server's intention was to ensure space for a larger group or not. Refusing us to sit there in such a way felt extremely inappropriate. He suggested that we could sit at a non-couch table that could also accommodate for four seats. I wonder if anyone else would have similar thoughts when encountering such...
Read moreEdit: John contacted me and went above and beyond in trying to fix this issue! He even talked through what items are gluten free on the menu with more specificity, and offered to refund me. I really appreciate it! I'm so glad Maru is still safe for me to eat at.
I usually love maru and find it very safe to eat at with my gluten allergy. I ordered my normal doordash order, alerting them to the allergy on the doordash app. The receipt even says I did. However, this time the mackerel with the sashimi deluxe came with some sort of topping. When I called to ask what it was, they told me the udon was gluten free (?). I asked again and they said it was seaweed, but it does not look like seaweed. It looks like seasame seeds and green onions mixed with something else. I'm really disappointed they were not able to tell me what it was. In the past they've been super good for allergies... even labeled my soy sauce gluten free, but something went...
Read moreSeriously the best sushi you can ever get in town. 👍👍 They've been awarded with the "Best Sushi in Town" every single year since 2009. There's a reason why. If you haven't tried Maru, try going in and you won't regret at all. Their sushi is very well prepped and always so fresh. They have the best udon noodle soup broth, as well as their house made gyoza(dumplings). Really, they make their own dumplings and THEY ARE SO DELICIOUS. You seriously can't beat the quality and the service you can get from Maru than any other place in town, especially among the ones on campus. Give sashimi donburi(hwe-dut-bap) a try, it's one of the best for sure. If you think Maru is overpriced, your mistake. Go to other sushi places in town and try comparing the prices on your own. Maru is even cheaper than all of them. Reasonable price, great great food and...
