Chinese buffets are basically the MacDonalds of Asian food. I love buffets because I can try many things and overeat, but it is possible to be dissapointed. Great Moon looked nice, great art, clean looking, very well staffed (overstaffed it seemed). The food looked good. The reality is, there was not much flavour. It was filling, and well stocked, but nothing made me feel like getting seconds. The salad bar is possibly the best point, some very tasty fruit salads there. For seeming overstaffed, it amazes me how many employees walked by me and did not notice my empty glass. The soda fountain was situated in such a way as to discourage people from refilling their own beverages. I finally waved someone down. He brought over a pitcher of soda that had been sitting out and no ice in it. This is what he refilled my glass with. The sushi bar had several choices, but they all tasted the same to me. The dessert bar has barely anything. It is also about $20 per adult for dinner, the most expensive buffet I have been to so far. Great Moon Buffet 3/5

$33 for two people (drinks included). I kid you not, I had 4 plates of blue crab. Don’t worry, I’m not that stingy person who takes 2/3 of the tray as soon as it comes out (I went up four separate times). The food here at Great Moon tonight was fresh & overall pretty good. Of course you’ve got your overly seasoned-with-MSG pickings, but that’s what Chinese Buffets are supposed to be right? Great Moon is across the street from another buffet, equally good; GM is a lot smaller in size, but that’s ok. Service was good tonight; our server was attentive & refilled our beverages & pre-bussed our table in a timely manner. I didn’t get hibachi, but I noticed the chef was putting out plates efficiently. For dessert, I probably ate a whole mango, they were perfectly ripe & delicious. Today’s service was prompt & professional compared to other Chinese buffet experiences we’ve had; & the food was fresh & classically good for a buffet.

I gave this place a try because I haven’t been to a Chinese buffet in years. My experiences with them have not been the best and always have me wishing I’d spent my money at another spot. This place made sure I never go back to a Chinese buffet again for a LONG time. While there are variations of foods to choose from, you’ll want to have none after you try them. The food lacks any actual flavor and nothing tastes “fresh”. The only good thing I liked where the donut cakes and ice cream. Even the pink lemonade that I had, which was house made, did not taste like pink lemonade at ALL. The only good thing that came out of this experience where the laughs my sister and I had while reviewing the food as we ate and saw the disgust in each other’s faces. Here’s a picture of her giving a “wish us luck” thumbs up before our experience.

🚫 Please stop supporting Great Moon Buffet in Maplewood 🚫

I’m sharing this to raise awareness after a deeply upsetting experience at this restaurant during what was supposed to be a joyful celebration.

Last night, we were celebrating my niece and nephew’s 9th birthday. They chose Great Moon Buffet. Despite past experiences that made us sick, we decided to give the place one more try.

We had a party of 20. My family of 5 arrived first, paid, and were seated. While I stepped away to the restroom, the manager came by, checked our receipt, and moved it to the head of the table.

As more guests arrived, others in our party came in, asking if we had a reservation and questioning whether we had space. Meanwhile, the birthday kids ran up to hug us, and that seemed to cause more confusion.

The manager then told everyone arriving to keep their receipts visible, as he was unsure who had paid. At that point, the only two unpaid guests were the children who ran up to say hello.

Then he said, twice:

“If you don’t like what I asked, I’ll check the cameras.”

I called him over and calmly asked: Why speak to paying customers like this? Why treat us like we’re trying to get away with something?

His response:

“Fine. Leave. I don’t need your money.”

So we asked for refunds and decided to go elsewhere. As he struggled to issue the return, (maybe due to an outdated card system), I expressed my disappointment: • “This is your fault.” • “You’re bad at your job.” • “You treated us like we were scamming you, we weren’t. We have money, and this could’ve been resolved easily.”

Then he called the police and said:

“This man threatened me.”

That part didn’t even surprise me. It was just another reminder of what it’s like to be a Black man in public spaces—how your presence, your voice, and your confidence can be seen as a threat.

Police arrived. No threats had been made. Multiple guests were recording the entire interaction. It was a complete waste of everyone’s time—including the Maplewood officers, who were respectful and professional. Once told the situation Officers told us to go ahead about our day. I left feeling disrespected, profiled, and deeply disappointed.

I share this so others know what kind of service and treatment they may be supporting. Ask yourself: Who are you giving your money to? How do they treat people who look like me?

There are plenty of other restaurants in the area that know how to treat their customers—with dignity and respect.

Thanks for reading. I hope it makes you...

GO TO MAPLEWOOD LOCATION!!I stopped going. I was addicted for a while. Until I realized how dirty they are. They think hand sanitizer is the cure for all. They roll silverware go to register and deal with money then do a little squirt and start rolling with their bare hands again.yuck. certain things should be done with soap and water vs. Hand sanitizer. Restaurants are held to a different standard then that in which you do in your own home. One girl walks around and picks her teeth allllll.day literally. And then doesnt wash her hands before dealing with you. Its called "go to a dentist" and the guy who refills the food seriously makes you feel like you are in the way. He doesnt say a word and just bully pushes his way though to refill pans .He also takes the food that has dropped on the counters and just adds it back to the pans(who cares whats on the counters where everyones hands have touched.) The young male servers are rude and sit on their phones and eat and drink.in front of you which is a big NO NO . You do not stand and eat and chill out where your customers can see you!! SO TACKY AND TOO COMFORTABLE ON THE JOB. And now you want a tip?? My whole family use to go faithfully and now none of us go. GERMS GERMS GERMS! THE BATHROOMS ARE ALWAYS...

Ok food, but terrible business ethics. Let me make it clear, there are several great moon buffet, this particular one is located at 1200 Robert St S Saint Paul, MN 55118. You may find this is hard to believe but this actually happened. I went there with a friend and his wife. We came here because last week we were satisfied with the food. However this time at the cashier when we were about to pay, suddenly an old man showed up which I assumed is the business owner, he said the food cost is too high, if we come here mainly to eat seafood then he will lose money, and crawfish costs 17 dollars per pound he said. If we eat lots of seafood then he will not be able to maintain the business. We didn't say anything and went away, because I didn't want this matter keep ruining my mood and arguing is a waste of my time. However I feel like I am morally obligated to let everybody know how Great Moon is doing their business and how rude they are treating customers. It is a buffet but they give customer attitude if you eat too much. I call for peoples attention to avoid this restaurant due to their lack of ethnics and wrong doings. There is no reason we should let this kind of business...
