My husband, son and I just visited Plaza Azteca yesterday. For me, it was a mixed bag. Read on for details:

Pros: Super Fresh, Tasty, Large Portions, Comfy Leather Padded Chairs/Benches, Clean, Stylish and Open Dining Area, Friendly/Competent Waitress. Hubby LOVED his vegan bowl!

Cons: Pricey. They only offer ONE size margarita--and it's huge...and it's $15. My husband and son brought distilled water with them. We ordered Empanadas, Ceviche, Vegan Bowl, Birria Tacos (lunch version) and Sonora. Our bill was $85+ (gulp). I asked for sour cream. Turns out, they charged me $2 for that.

The ceviche was made tableside and had a LOT In it. So fresh! The only drawback was that they put tilapia in with the shrimp; it gives it a fishy taste, yes--but not in a good way. I guess they did this because they're shrimp is SO fresh, you can't taste it (which is actually a good thing).

The music that was playing was SO loud and obnoxious (it sounded like Mexican Clowncore)--and the waitress agreed. She turned it down twice, but then finally changed the playlist (Gaga, Katy Perry, etc.). The music was SO manic, it was anxiety producing. Crazy! And to think I had to ask twice just to get the volume down (we couldn't even hear each other across the table).

All the TVs with a large central bar. This gives the place more of a sports bar feel than a restaurant. It's not bad--I mean, at least the TVs had no volume, but it doesn't feel like a relaxing family restaurant. More like a place the bros go to get beer and tacos on a Friday night...

In all honesty, Chili's margaritas are much better than this place (the best I've ever had, in fact--especially their strawberry Presidente margaritas). And while Plaza Azteca DOES have fare you won't find at other restaurants (el pastor marinade, ceviche, birria tacos, etc.)--it's not enough to lure me back (especially when restaurants like Uniontown, PA's Fiesta Azteca has such yummy, though standard, fare--and only mixed-based margaritas). And certainly...

Oh so good! One of the best Mexican restaurants we’ve ever been to. Including the one in Texas. The waitress her name was something like heyda please forgive me I know it’s not correct but hopefully close was so nice. She smiled the whole time and understood my order which was a bit complicated. Super friendly! I asked for something to be done a certain way and they did it without hesitation. The taco shells were borderline soft and borderline crunchy. I never had any like that and they were so good. My tacos were so filling with corn onions ground meat, poblanos, cheese, and much more. The rice and beans were good too. Let’s not forget the homemade guacamole so yummy. Homemade is hard to find! The salsa was delicious as well. My Fiancé got the San Jose burrito and raved about it. It was huge with this delicious white cheese and sour cream like sauce drizzled all over it. He loved it! Now my only problem is we’re from Pennsylvania and don’t have one near us which really makes me sad. I’m so glad we tried this place while visiting Morgantown. Thanks Plaza Aztecs for one of the most memorable meals...

I ordered a strawberry lemonade and when the waitress brought the drink to the table I confirmed with her that it did not have alcohol in it. I then took a sip of the drink. As I was taking the sip, I inhaled through my nostrils and smelt what I knew to be alcohol. I then immediately spat the contents in my mouth out onto the table because I knew it was an alcoholic beverage. I then let management know that the drink had alcohol in it, at which point they told me I was wrong and double-down on their position that it did not have alcohol. I was later able to confirm, using alcohol test strips, that the drink was an alcoholic beverage. Up until that point, in my 35 years of living, I had never consumed alcohol, and I was planning to keep it that way, however Plaza Azteca prevented me from doing so by poisoning me! That was not fair to me or my body. My body...

Second time dining there. The first experience was great - the food and environment. This time - service and environment were great. I ordered the baja fish tacos. The breaded fish was like a seriously generic version of Gordon's breaded frozen fish - sans fish. It was overcooked and there was scarcely any fish as you can see from the photo. It was mostly crunchy, greasy fried batter at ~$17 for the meal. Won't get this one again and recommend they reevaluate or take off the menu completely. I've ordered delivery from here as well. In general, a good dining experience. Just stay away from the baja fish tacos.

Look we live in West Virginia alright. It's not Texas, it's not Arizona, it's not even Oklahoma. It's WV. So when I say that relative to the area this is excellent Mexican food, I'm not saying it's going to go in the hall of fame if you've been to those areas and had a lot of Tex-Mex. HOWEVER. This place slaps in my opinion. The Mayan tacos are an absolutely ridiculous deal. Look at these things! They pile the shrimp and octopus high and it's perfectly grilled. Tableside guac is fantastic. Drinks are solid but I wouldn't go there just for margs.

Personally, I think this place blows Los Mariachis out of the water. Yes their prices are a bit higher, but common people, let's not forget about inflation and the supply chain shortage which has increased prices everywhere. The quality of food here is great and it is always delicious. I would reccomend the barria or shrimp tacos, however, I have been with friends who have ordered other things off the menu and everyone was pleased. The margaritas are also made with fresh fruit daily, so if you are a margarita person, these won't disappoint you.
