Let me preface this review by saying that I really really want this place to succeed as I love these types of establishments and supporting small businesses, especially ones in my own neighborhood. I have visited Mestizo twice, once for drinks and another time for dinner + drinks. Both times I found the beer just not good at all. All the beers I tried tasted like they came from a do it yourself homebrew kit, had a syrup like and stale taste, even the Mexican lager. The margaritas are decent. Dinner was a very disappointing experience. After 45min with no food I had to walk up to the counter to get a status which we come to find our food was delivered to another table. This isn't entirely on the staff as the other table accepted food that was not theirs, but there wasn't a lot of other tables at the time and we were sitting right next to the counter so someone stopping by to check in or noticing we had a number with no food would have been nice. And even when we did get our food it was very cold. I will say the food was very solid even if it was cold, so I imagine when its hot and fresh its even better. We were also given a voucher for a free beverage and food item which was a nice gesture. I won't say I'll never come back, but it will probably be a while before we do. I know this is a newer establishment so maybe some kinks are still being worked out. As I mentioned, the food was good so that alone is worth...
Read moreI wanted to give this place a try due to the high reviews so I did but was extremely disappointed, specifically in the food quality. I came during a pretty busy time so I had a bit of a wait time even though there was no one in front of me in line (only one bartender/server, I completely understand the situation, but another bartender was sorely needed). Atmosphere wise the place seems really crammed during busy times so I could only imagine what it's like when it's at full capacity. Aesthetically it's decent in decor; the walls (especially where you order) could use a bit more pizzazz. Anyways, the bartender attended to me as soon as possible; I could tell she was doing her best. I ordered a chicken tinga torta dine-in. It was well presented and looks picture worthy but the let down was in the quality of food. For one, the size seems a bit small from a traditional torta. But my biggest gripe was how it tasted: flavorless. Unseasoned. Bland. Boring. The price doesn't match the...
Read moreso excited for this place. we attended a soft opening (pretty sure the first review for this place didn't realize they'd stumbled into an invite only soft opening). The food is even better than it was during the blue taco bus era! We got a spinach & cheese pupusa for the kids. The pickled cabbage really made it pop. al pastor tacos are probably my favorite. I also had the steak sandwich with avocado salsa - i will prob ask for that salsa on everything, so good....
oh yea, and the beer! the selections were unique. of course the staple - mexican lager, and i had a guava hazy that was a great treat.
