This is a great hole-in-the-wall mexican food restaurant with a huge menu (tons of choices), top tier margaritas and excellent tex mex and mexican food. I would give 5 stars across the board, except for a few nits. Don't let the simple exterior dissuade you - when you get inside you'll find it's well decorated, cozy, and clean. Most importantly, this is GREAT FOOD.
I have visited this place twice and tried to vary my order for the full experience. The tex mex enchiladas are excellent, great tacos, great spanish rice. The shrimp cocktail (and presentation - in a huge beer mug) is one of the best I have had anywhere, with just the right amount of spice. Their relIeno was sublime (I recommend ordering naked or sauce on the side). The carne guisada is to die for on a cold day. I HIGHLY recommend the mini chicken flautus as an appetizer. Served naked with queso, sour cream and guac on the side, these may be the best flautas I have had anywhere and there is nothing mini about them. I honestly cant stop thinking about those flautas.
Alas, the first of my nits: the charro beans were not good! I do love my sides and these were a big disapointment - they are like beans with enchilada sauce - and they are just not right.
Also, the service was slow (and neither time I visited was super busy). I appreciate that Tex Mex restauraunt where there's a micro second after you sit down and the chips are in front of you. That didnt happen here. More like 10 min before anyone came by at alI, I had to wave and jiggle my glass to get another round of drinks (even water), anithet 10 to get my order taken, and a short nap before I could pay.
Even with those two minor issues, this place is well worth the visit. Every dish (sans charro beans) was great and we got out with huge meals +2 rounds of drinks and carry-outs for around $25 pp.
Again, the menu and selection here are huge so your vegetarian friends will have lots of options. As a carnivore, i did not inquire about vegan options, so tread carefully.
Dont let my tiny constructive criticism stop you from trying this place out. Just keeping it real in my reviews. You'll visit 10 mexican food restaurants before finding anything else this good. Just come prepared to take a little extra time and order the refried beans. 😉 And dont skip the flautas - even if they arent your typical...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I love to come here to eat as the food is good and the service is usually pretty good as well. However, last nights visit has made a change my view on this restaurant because of the service we received. My boyfriend was still eating off of his plate and the waitress assumed he was done and started to take his plate while he was actively getting a bite scooped up on his fork. He looked at her and said “I’m still eating” she quickly apologized and left to allow him to continue to eat. He is a US Navy vet and he has received a veteran’s discount each time we have gone there. The lady asked to s the his ID so he went to his car to get his DD214 as his ID does not say veteran. He just never thought of getting it out on there. The waitress takes the paper and brings it to the bar manager. I was watching to see what they were doing and I could tell they had no clue as to what they were looking at. So waitress returned and said her boss won’t honor it. I told her I could tell they had no idea what a DD214 was. That being said I educated her on it and said it’s his Honorable Discharge paper work from the US Navy. I told her his papers will match his ID. She said he still needed a military ID. Now we usually throw that money back with the tip to our servers, but this was the first time ever that I told him to not leave a tip. I felt it was a slap in the face to all those who serve and served our country. His sacrifices were great. He is still here with us today and he was the first ship to leave the states and head to Afghanistan after 9/11 the server we had I don’t think was even alive on 9/11 but it was a day in history that is a day no American will never forget. This isn’t about the discount it was the fact we showed proof and they still wouldn’t honor it. We will not be back! The food is great but the service and lack of respect is...
Read more*I reviewed this place a few months ago & gave it 4, went a few more times, and after this last trip, had to come to terms with reality: Beer is cold, but food is not great. Every time I ordered more than chips & queso, I was dissatisfied & disappointed. Lunch time, mid-week, place was definitely not busy. Me & 2 friends. We stayed for a bit bc we were planning last minute details for a memorial service. 2 had water w/lemon & were never offered a refill. My beef quesadilla was burnt on one side (which was brought out “good-side” up, but I could taste it and flipped it over), beef was chewy and fatty. I never send food back, so I just peeled off the burnt pieces, which didn’t leave much left. I don’t think I will be returning, found other places with cold beer & better food. This time service was ok, not great as once before. I really wish this place was better, we need good local bars around here. The following is my original review. “Small family restaurant with two tables (2 chairs each) in bar “area”, and seats at the bar. Schooners available for cold beer ( reasonably priced!) The appetizers are hit and miss, sometimes awesome, sometimes not. Restaurant area has great booths, a few with room for eight. Tables are really close together.... HOWEVER, it it weren’t for the ‘Vid, has a wonderful feeling of being at a large family dinner. Service is great, beers are cold...all I really look for😬. I would definitely say, worth a visit. (Sry no...
