CRAZY THAI + CLUCK - BOBA ... New to me, and maybe others reading this. At least the Crazy Thai name is new to me. Located on 3409 McNeil Ave, across from Whataburger and in front of Harbor Freight.
I happened upon the name change/addition while passing by at lunch time the other day, and this caused me to stop. I love Thai Food and here we are walking in the door.
Ambiance is cool walking in the door. It's a dark motif now compared to the bright white of the former Grandy's location. Was immediately greeted by the manager, Bayu (By-You), a kind and courteous man with a huge smile.
Was given a choice of where to sit, I opted for a booth knowing I'd be taking a lot of pictures. There were plenty of tables for a large crowd.
The menu has a lot of traditional choices. I chose a couple of my favorite appetizers, the Gyoza (pan fried) and Spring Rolls. They were both delicious, each with their own dipping sauce to highlight the flavors, and they did.
For the entrées, we went with a couple of my favorites. The 'Thai Entree' is a stir fry style. Pick your protein and pick your sauce, we went with the Beef Thai Basil and white rice, accompanied by a bowl of Onion Soup. It was so freaking delicious! You can't go wrong with any of their 'Thai Entree' options, they all look good.
The other meal was found under 'Thai Noodles' where I found my favorite dish Pad See Ew. I opted for a beef/chicken combo and shot down the salad. OMG! It was so damn good, I haven't found the dish available locally for about five years and this one was spot on.
Whatever you order, you shouldn't be disappointed, as Thai restaurants are always very large in portions. You definitely get all your money's worth on this meal.
Our server was a very nice young lady named Sam. Tell Bayu or Sam, Michael said "Hi!", when you visit.
The other options I forgot to grab a menu for is the Cluck- Boba side of the house. They also serve Asian Style Fried Chicken. Chicken and Wings with Dipping Sauces. I'll save that for another visit.
Definitely a fat boy five star rating! ☆☆☆☆☆
Addendum ... I saw in another review a customer complaining about the Lamb Thai Basil, leaving a poor review on it, all the while comparing it to the BEEF Thai Basil she's had everywhere else. How ignorant to complain on one protein compared to another, that was your fault your choice. Next time get the BEEF if you're going to compare it to other BEEF products. You owe this...
Read moreI want to preface this by saying I'm sorry for this review. I'm not good at being critical of nice people but I always try to give an honest review as anything less is a disservice to my community.
Massaman curry - 3.5/5 - good+ I ordered 5 spice level out of 5. It was not spicy at all. Closer to what you'd typically get with thai curry if you asked for a 0 or 1 on the spicy level. The incorrect spice level is not reflected in the 3.5/5. It's rated this way based on the flavors.
Fried rice - 3/5 - good about 2.5 dollars to upgrade to fried rice with the curry. Serving size was about 60% of what you'd get elsewhere. Way too little rice for the amount of curry given. I had about half the curry leftover.
Chicken tenders - 2/5 - okay I saw the raves in the reviews, and perhaps they set an unrealistic expectation for me, but these were just okay. Eating them actually pulled forward a memory of sitting in the middle school cafeteria where we were served similar ones, unfortunately. Ggain, not bad, not dry, just I would call these 'okay' and not 'good'.
The honey mustard is good.
Note, when I got home my back had 3/4 cup of water in it. Everything was properly sealed. It wasn't curry, it was water. I order curry ALL the time and have never had more than a tablespoon of condensation pool. This was a significant amount. Literally 3/4 cup of water in the bag.
Final note, There was a bit of wait at the window to receive the food. It wasn't ready until about 11 minutes after my requested pickup time, which was already about 20 minutes after I ordered on mobile. Just be aware of this if...
Read moreFinally tried this place after their incredible transformation - blown away!
We’d been eyeing Cluck & Boba for months, but their fried chicken-focused menu never quite pulled us in. Then everything changed - new name, completely revamped menu, and suddenly we couldn’t wait to give it a shot. Best decision we made all week.
My wife ordered the lamb with peanut sauce, and I watched in amazement as she devoured every last bite. The meat was fall-apart tender, and that peanut sauce? Absolutely perfect balance of rich, savory, and just a hint of sweetness. When she cleans her plate like that, you know it’s something special. The chicken satay was equally outstanding - crispy, juicy, and paired beautifully with that same incredible peanut sauce.
But let’s talk about the real showstopper: the Thai Basil Duck. WOW. This is hands-down some of the best duck I’ve ever tasted - anywhere. Impossibly tender meat with a spice level (we went with 4) that brought the perfect heat without overwhelming the dish. The Thai basil added this amazing aromatic kick, and the sauce was so complex and flavorful, I was practically licking the plate. Pro tip: get it with steamed white rice instead of fried. Trust me on this - the fluffy rice perfectly balances the rich, savory sauce and lets all those incredible flavors shine through.
We’ve already got our next visit planned for next week. This place has instantly become one of our go-to spots, and we can’t wait to work our way through the rest of the...
