I like the idea of a fast-casual authentic (wood-fired) Italian pizza restaurant, but fast food chains aren't my thing, especially when they go overboard with the Italian influence - I'm paying $7 for a sandwich; you don't have to call it "mediterraneo," or pollo, or insalata. It's like if they outsourced the naming of the menu to Giada DeLaurentis, and she reads everything with an over-pronunciation that's just too much for a quick lunch on a Wednesday.
I had the "testarossa," which consisted of marinara sauce, pepperoni, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, calamata olives, mushrooms, and oregano. It sounded like it would be a sweet, spicy, and salty explosion of flavor in my mouth, but the flavors were all so dull that it wasn't worth my time to even finish my modestly-sized pie.
Of course, with this being a regional chain, I wasn't expecting much by ways of flavor, but it's still a step up from fast food fare, more on the level of something like Jason's Deli (though I like that concept quite a bit more). Seeing as how the food should be the same no matter which location, the only thing that is unique to this location is the service, which was very good, especially considering I was amongst a party of approximately 30 single diners, and they were able to not only accomodate all of us during the lunch rush, but the food didn't have much of a...
Read moreI did not appreciate feeling rushed to order right away because of "how we do things here a little differently". I instead asked for a menu to look at, and sat down at a table with my wife to decide what to order. A waiter or waitress did not come to our table to take our order. I instead stood up and patiently took the menu to the back of a long line at the front of the restaurant, again, and ordered. I did not appreciate paying for my order first, and asking to tip generously on a tablet screen before even seeing the service or the food. To be fair, the staff was friendly and all smiles. I however was not impressed by being checked on once only to ask how the food tastes. I would have appreciated being offered some extra napkins. To make matters worse, my dessert was forgotten. I had to ask for my dessert at the end of the meal, to go of course. The only positive part of my experience was the pizza and spicy olive oil was delicious. Service was practically non existent. I would have expected such an authentic and light Italian meal to have service to...
Read moreWe usually love going to Il Vicino. But last night we ordered a pizza to go. When we got home we found two hairs in two different spots on the pizza. When I called the restaurant to tell them about it, the manager proceeded to ask about the color and length of the hairs. She said that the cooks do wear hats and immediately put the pizza in a box right after it comes out of the oven. I'm thinking at this point that she does not believe me. We ended up taking the pizza back so that they could see it. They looked like beard hairs and sure enough one of the kitchen workers had a full beard that was not covered at all. They only asked if we wanted them to make us another one. Ummm. NO. The manager said that the "general manager" would call us tomorrow. I have yet to hear from anyone. We will not be going back. If you go, make sure to look your food over...
