El Comal is something different for the Burlington area. It's not the small fancy tacos and cocktails that you get at El Cortijo, but it's also not the big plates of some variation of tortilla with meat cheese and vegetable that you get at Casa Real / Casa Grande.
El Comal is serving legit Oaxacan Mexican food and it is excellent. I urge you to check this place out because it's very easy to miss:
It's unassumingly tucked into Taft's corner Williston. They don't have a website with photos of the requisite food porn. The space is pretty tiny. (as of February when I visited): Their decor is completely minimalist. They don't have a liquor license.
Everyone whines about not having authentic Mexican food in Vermont. This is it! I don't know what else to say. The tortillas are hand made and you can immediately tell. We had the mole and the enfrijolada and they were excellent, with a complex flavor that Casa Real is not going to give you (although to be fair, they will give you a margarita the size of your head. I like them too). My only, singular complaint was that my black beans were a little cold by the time they arrived at the table. But even at lukewarm, they were miles better than the "I swear they just dumped it of out a can" black beans that I've...
Read moreUPDATE: I came back and absolutely loved my experience even more than the first time! The green chicken enchiladas were absolutely incredible. Very comparable (if not even better than enchiladas that you find in Mexico.) Not everywhere in Mexico hand makes their tortillas with quality ingredients. This time my enchiladas had enough salsa! I also feel like the sauce was even more flavorful. 10/10 the chicken mole tamale was also incredible. Real authentic mole! Can’t find that anywhere. So happy this place exists in Vermont. It’s relieving actually.

Being a Mexican from Mexico in Vermont I was SO excited when I heard about El comal. I could tell that the ingredients were fresh and that they knew what they were doing. You can tell by how the tortillas taste. Freshly homemade. Exactly how you’ll find them in Mexico. I over all really enjoyed my experience with the food. The only thing I would suggest is that I felt like they could have added more green sauce to my enchiladas. I was also expecting some spicy-ness, there wasn’t any. Wishing you guys the...
Read moreWe went for the very first time on Sunday for lunch after waiting for what seemed like forever and seeing excellent reviews online. The restaurant was barren of decor (not a huge deal if the food was incredible, but alas it wasn't). The hostess and server were very nice but no one checked to see how our food was. We ordered the rice, chicken quasadillas, and Sirloin taco. The casadilla was tortilla and very dry flavorless chicken. The rice was OK, it was cooked well but all you could taste was butter. The flavor of the Sirloin taco was great, it gave traditional Carne asada vibes. However there was more fat than beef. After reading more reviews we have decided that we will try again but maybe try the things that people are...
