Shame on the Wilmington Blue Rocks. I have never been so disappointed in a family organization. Let me preface with the statement that I have attended multiple Blue Rocks games and have had very positive interactions with the organization, however, when the rubber meets the road, their true colors came out. This past Friday, a group of us were very excited to attend a Blue Rocks game. A close friend of mine and her boyfriend were sitting in the elderly/handicapped section as they brought a young child to the game who had special needs. As they welcomed a gift from a stranger, they were quickly hit with a ball from the field. The ball first hit her and bounced off to hit her boyfriend and broke his nose. When the first aid member from the Blue Rocks finally arrived on scene, she was only concerned with the fact that my friend did not need stitches. As my friend was fading in and out of consciousness, her father and I were fighting for her to be taken to the hospital as well to be evaluated for head trauma. My friend had to wait twenty minutes for an ambulance to arrive. We felt helpless in the lack of medical care that was available at the Blue Rocks. That night, she required a CT scan and was diagnosed with a very serious concussion. We left the hospital at 2AM. Even the medical professionals at the hospital all said that the Blue Rocks should be responsible. In the days following the event, my friend attempted to call the Wilmington Blue Rocks many times but her calls went unanswered. When she finally was able to get ahold of someone to speak with her, she was cut off and quickly read the liability sentence on the tickets. I doubt this is the first incident of someone being hit in the head at a game. Unfortunately, this one "hit" too close to home. I am disappointed in the Blue Rocks for not raising the nets higher to protect the vulnerable-specifically those who are elderly or those with special needs. As a teacher of students with disabilities, it is unnerving to me that a company would do so little to protect the vulnerable. Had the ball hit the child, it could have been a completely different story. Those with disabilities are often unable to react quickly in defense of anything coming in their direction. If the Blue Rocks know that foul balls are common in that seating area, it is absolutely their responsibility to move the vulnerable out of the direction of foul balls and into safer seating arrangements. Wilmington Blue Rocks, you have lost my business...
Read moreThe games is always fun. Great weather. They kept Mr. Celery and Rocky the Moose even though they are no longer affiliated with the Royals. The Friday night fireworks were great. They've improved the parking lots in right field.
The changes they made (pitch clock) moved the game along. It was a 10-3 nine inning game, with pitching changes in 2:20.
BUT, the concessions were awful. The lines took 20 minutes. They seemed completely unorganized. They have a digital display menu that tells you virtually nothing and is not updated as things run out. When I finally got to the window they were out of Jumbo hot dogs (6th inning), the regular hot dogs wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. They were out of premium beer they only had one size of standard awful beer, and to top it off they sold me "nachos" at full price and then told me the cheese machine was broken. So I got chips and salsa with jalapeños for $6.00. 5 stars - 2 for the overpriced, poorly run...
Read moreBrought our daughter for her first game this evening (6/4). My husband called last week about getting her name announced and they said to go to customer service at arrival. Nothing was mentioned about needing cash or anything to pay for a donation. When we arrive we are told it is a $5 donation. The last time we were there we realized they didn’t take cash anywhere in the stadium so this time we only had our cards. The lady said she only takes cash but not to worry about it and told us when to expect the name announcement. Bottom the the 6th comes and they don’t announce her. Dad and I were extremely disappointed, upset and irritated. When someone calls and asks a question like this, give them all of the information so they can come prepared. Had we known it was a $5 donation and had to be cash only, we would’ve brought that no problem. And for the woman to tell us not to worry about it and they not announce her, really...
