El genio caught my immediately—when I saw Cuban pizza I was curious to see what that meant. I’ve had a lot of pizza but never Cuban pizza. The list of options here is endless, it was so hard to choose. We’ll definitely be back to try other selections soon. First we started off with yucca fries and Maduros which were both made with lots of love. The oil they use in the back is fresh and the yucca and Maduros texture came out hot and perfect 😮‍💨the owner suggested we try the Maduros with mayoketchup which was surprisingly GAS! We also grabbed a Cuban and a pizza de cebollas and added chorizo to it. Sheeeeeesh both were amazing. The Cuban took us back to Miami—so authentic and such a hefty portion! And the pizza? Damn whatever they’re doing to that crust is MAGIC. Super fluffy inside but extremely crispy golden brown exterior. The drink selection to wash it all down was also impressive. All in all extremely impressed and excited to return. Highly recommend stopping in to try this gem! Share it with friends, they deserve to know about this place too❤️

The beef and Cuban sandwich are both flavorful and filling, a good portion of meat and toppings are on both however the Cuban on 3 separate occasions has been salty. The pizza has a great flavor however it’s extremely dough-y in the middle tasting uncooked and very disappointing. The edge however is perfect given it’s cooked in a pan so it has that nice crust. Spaghetti is also very tasty and large portion as well. The service is where things start to take a slope. Call ahead orders aren’t an option unless paid for over the phone which is inconvenient for those who are uncomfortable giving that information out as well as the time it takes to receive the order is an extreme amount, nearly 30 minutes for 2 items. Staff here also seems inconvenienced when spoken to. Food is great. Service needs to be worked on

We ordered the personal pizza, a bistec sandwich, and a mamey milkshake. The personal pizza was good, but not the best—definitely not like El Rey's. I’m not sure if the cheese was cheddar; I was expecting a blend of Gouda and mozzarella. Nevertheless, we finished it all. The bistec sandwich was also good, but not the best. I got heartburn from it, which is rare for me. However, it was huge and definitely worthy of the price. I found the mamey milkshake to be less sweet and missing mamey flavor. Will I come back? Absolutely! I want to try more items from the menu. I was born and raised in Miami for over 40 years, and I'm happy to support local businesses like this one. I'm definitely looking forward to trying more dishes in the future.

El Genio Pizzeria: A Taste of Cuba in the San Antonio area

El Genio Pizzeria has expanded its menu beyond its renowned Cuban-style pizzas to now offer a full array of authentic Cuban dishes. This evolution reflects the historical influence of Italian immigrants on Cuban cuisine, particularly the development of the unique Cuban pizza. Owner Jorge maintains a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, ensuring each pizza is crafted to perfection. While the Hawaiian, Cheese, Ham, and Sausage pizzas remain popular favorites, the real culinary highlight lies in the new additions to the menu. Traditional Cuban staples like Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Steak with onions, and Cuban-style pork are now available, served with delectable sides such as sweet plantains, tostones, yucca, or French fries alongside congri (black beans and rice) or white rice. The menu also boasts an exquisite Cuban sandwich and a flavorful pork sandwich, while dessert options include classic flan and delightful guava pastries. Freshly baked Cuban bread is available daily for take-home enjoyment. The restaurant offers a variety of batidos (shakes) in flavors like mamey, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. The friendly staff welcomes patrons, particularly the many Cuban immigrants who have relocated to San Antonio and yearn for these authentic flavors. Notably, the pizza maker and the cooks preparing the Cuban dishes are themselves Cuban, ensuring an authentic culinary experience. For those new to Cuban cuisine, El Genio Pizzeria offers a delightful introduction to the vibrant flavors and rich traditions of this captivating...
