Amato's Sandwich Shops — Restaurant in Windham

I have been going to this Amato’s ever since we moved to Gray in 1992. Before this I have gone to the Amato’s in Portland and South Portland when we lived there. What do I get? Almost always I get the real Italian with salt, pepper and their sandwich oil. I have heard from those that live in states south of us that, “ That’s not an Italian, that’s a ham and cheese sandwich”. The Italians they get have salami etc and I’m not of fan of salami! Yes these are ham, cheese, pickles, green peppers, tomatoes, olives and onions. The ingredient that makes the sandwich is their sandwich oil! Some say it’s not an Italian but that’s what we call “Italian in Maine”. These Italians taste exactly the same at any Amato’s in the state. They are also known for their nice huge lobster roll during the summer. There is big chunks of lobster piled in the roll with mayo sauce. Yum! Of course they are famous for their pasta and pizza’s. I liked the baked ziti with meat sauce and meatballs and the melted cheese baked on top they are so good and I bet you will have a hard time to finish that whole dinner ziti in a foil pan with clear cover. The sauce is what makes it which is their own sauce. I haven’t tasted any better pasta sauce. The pickles are amazing that they make and sell in jars also. One thing you got to try is the pazzo bread with or without cheese topping are amazing, you’ll eat the whole tin promise you! They also make various types of poppers that are a yummy coated dough disc with different toppings and fillings. They usually have some under the warmers self serve along with pizza, pazzo and pasta dishes for takeout. I always will be seen going to this Amato’s to pickup all types of food. Right now they offer takeout and curbside which I used after ordering online. You have to try all the different foods here they are great!

A comment on the goodies at the checkout, the Labadies cream horns are very heavy. When eating them it was like eating a thick pastry with very little cream filling. I have had some that were half empty of filling and just a dob at other end that looked like there was some and then a short distance in almost no filling. I usually like cream horns but these weren’t a light flaky pastry like I’m used to. I don’t really recommend these if your looking for a light...

I'm a Windham resident and couldn't be more disappointed at my most recent visit today. Just needed 2 cold sandwiches - waited 25 minutes to get them and heard nothing but complaints from the staff as unhappy customers voiced their concerns about the poor service. While I was in the store they cancelled home deliveries and let the phone ring for incoming orders (I tried phoning in my order but no one answered). There were only 6 customers in the place so not sure what all the drama was about but something has definitely changed about this place. Overheard the manager on duty tell her people that if customers weren't happy with their level of service, they could go elsewhere to get their sandwiches. How to kill what used to be a great little business - just tell the customers they are all screwed up for expecting their orders to be processed in a reasonable amount of time and in a courteous manner. Way to go Amatos manager. Just what your staff needs to see & customers need to hear. I called in an order two nights ago. At the end of the call I asked the person, who I believe was the manager, to try to make sure the order was correct. I told him I was not trying to be rude but my previous three orders were messed up. When I got there everything was ready, I pay, I go out to my truck and check the order and sure enough they forgot a third of it. So I walk back in and the same guy looks at me and asks me if I’m back for the item not given to me, which was ready the first time I went in. On the brink of losing it I let him know that I was unhappy and that this keeps happening and that the last time I didn’t even get everything I paid for. All he told me was that I had to understand that he was working with a bunch of teenagers. So not only did he not acknowledge that they have been taking money from me without providing me with my full order, he goes and tries to throw all the other workers under the bus.
