I have been traveling this beautiful country the last two years doing reviews. After thousands of miles and millions of hits on my reviews I have found a restaurant that gets me. It is not easy traveling with a allergic reaction to wheat, barley, and rye. (Aka Gluten) The way I have to interview staff and be careful to not have an allergy reaction is tough traveling so much at times. Then I visited Urban Flats in Winter Garden, Florida. The small town charm of cobblestone streets, lights in the trees, fountains, swings, a water fountain that changes lights, and narrow streets gives this restaurant unique charming atmosphere. As I walk in I see two very colorful beautiful guitars that I find out they had live concerts of local artists coming in before covid hit. These two specific guitars were in a auction but were given to the restaurant. The wait for a table was short and they gave me a booth right next to see views of the courtyard which was nice. This is a family owned business that use to be a chain the family bought out and doing well. The fine dining and atmosphere is very hard to beat on your next date, family get together, or night out. I have to give a shoutout to my server John who was absolutely the best server I have had to date. He was very tentative and was properly trained to anticipate his guest needs. I was very impressed and my worries of getting an allergic reaction fast squashed with my servers knowledge and guidance over the gluten free menu. He steered me toward the Hawaiian bbq chicken, flatbed but first I had to try the tomato basil bisque. The tomato basil soup was very flavorful and the best I have eaten with home cooked potato chips. Wow it was good. That soup started my taste pallit. Then the Hawaiian bbq flatbed comes. It was more than just a flatbed but a whole pizza. Yes a whole gluten free pizza. As you can see in the pictures it was delicious as well. So simple but bursting with flavor. The other meal was a Turkey club sandwich with salad. After having the best meal ever with a glass of wine I thought it couldn't get any better but it was wrong. John told me about the gluten free molten lava chocolate cake cooked to order. Oh my word ! It was so hot and gooey! The cake was filled to perfection with vanilla bean ice cream and special coffee sauce to boot. I was in heaven eating the hot lava cake. Hot, sweet, cold, chocolate, cake, ice cream, and coffee taste. I have to say this is my favorite restaurant in my travels that has a full meal for my allergies. It is rare to get gluten free desserts. So, if you are ever in Orlando or area this is a must visit. You will not be disappointed. Tell them I...
Read moreAt Urban you're paying a premium for mediocre quality food and a faux upscale atmosphere. We went here on a whim for our anniversary dinner since we were in Winter Garden.
The service was great, the waitress whose name slips me was wonderful and made great recommendations.
I ordered a "new fashion" which I believe just became an old fashion because I didn't want the bacon with it. The drink was fine but had a LOT of orange compared to others that I've had. Maybe that's just a taste thing and that's fine, I'm not going to fault the restaurant for something I'm not knowledgeable about.
We made our order and the food came out swiftly. When our plates were put on the table my wife and I looked at each other and said if we knew the portions were this small we would've gotten an appetizer. The portions weren't tiny but we skipped lunch and hoped that for $20 an entree we'd have enough to take back to our room. I ordered the spicy shrimp and chicken pasta and my wife ordered the meatloaf. My pasta was decent, it had enough spice and was hot. I haven't ever ordered shrimp so I can't say whether it was good or bad, I just learned I didn't like it at no fault of the restaurant. The chicken was tough and tasted completely unseasoned, almost as if they expected the sauce to do the seasoning for them. You don't have to worry about getting salmonella if your chicken is overcooked I guess? My wife enjoyed her meatloaf but the potato was just barely warm enough when the plate came out so by the time she actually had some of it the potato was cold. The green beans that came with the meal were also completely unseasoned and seemed to be undercooked considering how hard they were. Our waitress came and took our plates so we paid and left because we decided to go find somewhere better for dessert.
The service was the best part of the whole experience, everyone that we interacted with was super kind and helpful. But the prices, portion sizes, food quality, and dare I say the music being so loud for such a quiet restaurant (I know I'm nitpicking at this point) completely pushed us away from being able to give a high rating for...
Read moreFood is very consistent and fairly priced. Excellent soups and appetizers and very tasty entrees. Bar fare is well-rounded and has a good selection of draft beers. You pretty much know exactly what you are getting when you go to Urban Flats. Best to make reservations if you know you are going. There was a service/kitchen issue which is not the first or even second time or I would not mention it, however, this has happened on more than a few occasions. Kitchen gets easily overwhelmed so check and see if there are large parties as the wait time gets pretty long. We waited this last Sunday at lunch time for 15 minutes before a server (Megan) came along and said "....sorry about that we are slammed" and then disappeared to take care of her larger tables. Sid she would check on our drink order and I never saw her go near the bar. Asst. Manager was very snippy ("Well, we're busy.") when I commented we had been waiting for 15 minutes for a drink order. As she was walking away I said to my wife we need to rethink this place when we are in a hurry (which we were due to a theatre show time looming). She turned back around and said in rather exasperated tone - "Is there something you needed or that you wanted to say." Whoa - wasn't talking to you so I thought that was rude. Bottom line is if there is a need to bring more staff in and then cut them then do so. Don't make the customers suffer for poor planning. The whole vibe sometimes feel very strained and on edge when they are busy. There is a different feeling when the General Manager is onsite. More organized and efficient. The front of house staff and bartenders are very pleasant and know what they are doing every time we have come in. Maybe we'll just sit at the...
