I had gotten my wedding cake done here. I had initially gone with someone else, though it didn't work out, so this was my backup. I had a very specific cake in mind. I wanted lace detailing and after seeing some of their sample work, felt satisfied enough to go through with this bakery. When I was at my consultation, I was told that what I had in mind couldn't be done with their limited resources (lace detailing) so they could do hand-made lace detailing instead. I agreed and discussed in detail how I wanted each layer and what I wanted inside. I explained that I wanted the bottom layer yellow cake so that when I cut in, it looks like traditional cake (unlike the Oreo layer above for my husband). When the cake actually arrived, it was a bit crooked which was disappointing. I had asked for matching cupcakes to give to my bridesmaids, and by the time those reached the hall - all but 2 were smashed / ruined. They apparently did not package them very well. I got over it. When it came time for me to actually cut the cake, surprise! The bottom layer of the cake was my husbands Oreo flavor! They switched the layers around. Completely ruining my cake cutting experience and the professional pictures that I will not own forever displaying the wrong cake. I was so disappointed. Of course when I did call and complain about the ordeal later, they offered me a compensation for their error. But a person usually only gets married once, I wish I found a better place to get my wedding cake done. Honestly I've had better cake, it has a store-bought taste, not that great and the presentation didn't wow me. For the price I paid, I could have gotten so much better. I wouldn't recommend it to any bride! If you're looking for cake for an event besides a wedding, this might be the...
Read moreI had a particularly complex cake decor request and they nailed it. I wanted a chantilly cake but with buttercream frosting and easy on the frosting. The challenging part being I wanted all the decor in frosting instead of laser printed and I wanted to capture a lot of different scenes for an 80th birthday. I had a meeting with a staff member to go over everything and the owner, Joan, came out to join us and pitched her own ideas and solutions based on her experiences and it was a great colab of ideas. It turns out she even decorated the cake herself because after meeting with me and seeing and hearing my ideas, she had a vision of what I wanted.
Everyone at the Birthday event oooo’d and ahhhh’d over the cake and asked me where I had it done. It tasted perfect and the birthday guy was really happy with the buttercream frosting and he’s typically not a huge frosting guy. In fact our whole family is not huge on frosting. This was the first cake that not one of us removed any of the frosting to eat it. It was perfect. The decor even had the kitchen of the restaurant we went to talking and the staff was asking where we got the cake.
Everyone was so awed by the decor and taste that it was the hit of the event. The friendly staff and care of the owner on top of that has won myself and family over.
I would HIGHLY recommend using Dorothy Ann Bakery for your next cake event.
Their deli food is also fantastic and an employee named Michelle suggested the idea of using their cinnamon bread for French Toast at my Brunch the following day. It was so so so good. Absolutely a great idea that everyone enjoyed again and I would also recommend.
Also, the price of the cake was lower than I would have expected for the taste, size, and decor requested. Really...
Read moreI really hate to do this, but I am forced to leave just a 2 star review. I ordered a black forest cake (torte) for my birthday in March as this is my most favorite dessert and I usually make it myself. I decided to try Dorothy Ann's version since I have enjoyed other bakery items from Dorothy Ann and honestly there aren't many nearby bakeries that make black forest as part of their regular menu. My first clue should have been the ice crystals inside the box, indicating that likely this thing had been frozen - for a while. The icing tasted like rancid plastic, which it should not really have been an icing but more of a cream/whipped cream/chantily or the like. I could not get this terrible plastic taste out of my mouth. The cherries had no tastable liqueur (cherry brandy) to speak of, and the chocolate cake was just mediocre at best - dry and underwhelming. I really wish I could leave a 5 star review of this cake as I certainly wanted that for my birthday, but honestly - it was terrible. My kids, who will eat any type of treat, even could not finish their pieces. I only finished my piece out of principality for what I paid for it. I threw basically all of it out and was super bummed about it. I hope it was just a bad batch, or had been frozen for way too long, but clearly the icing had sat out and wasn't stored correctly with that awful plastic taste. I understand it not being made right then and there, but it should taste good if not also actually be fresh and stored correctly. I should have tasted some semblance of cherry brandy and the cake should have at least been good as well. Sad day - bad cake - I hope this is not anyone else's...
