I was invited by a vendor to have dinner at Tutoni’s Restaurant in downtown York. I was looking forward to it as I have not found very many restaurants that have lived up to their ratings. While the menu was impressive this one did not meet expectations either. Upon entering restaurant was dimly lit and where we sat seemed very tight quarters. Restaurant was quiet and server was attentive to our needs of course we are the only ones they are so what else would they have done? As a guest, I was treated to multiple appetizers and first time having a charcuterie board. Not sure what the big deal is about this meat and cheese tray, I just give me a slice of Colby jack or pepper jack and I’ll be fine. I did try the fried zucchini but not really a big fan. I had the rainbow trout with mushrooms and quinoa. Not too bad and the portion size was good as a dinner item. Others in the dinner party expressed that their dinner was not as good as they expected. Spaghetti and meatballs another had a pasta dinner that they only ate half of it. I’m starting to see a common theme in York as it relates to restaurants and their ratings. Doesn’t seem like too many people have gotten out of town and experienced a true 4.6 or higher rated restaurant. Got a cheesecake dessert to go. Topping was some type of a blackberry jelly. Who puts jelly on cheesecake especially a fruit with seeds that just stop you in mid-tracks to spit out. Once and done for me on this one .

5 star food at a 3 star restaurant. First, let me say that the food was absolutely phenomenal. My husband got the gnocchi and I got the crawfish fettuccine in which were both some of the best pasta dishes we've ever eaten. We also ordered the calamari which was so very good. Now the bad: service was sub-par. I had to ask for a tap water refill and give our checks and cards to the server at the bar to get rung up to leave since they were paying more attention to the patrons at the bar than our table although we spent $200 between the 4 of us so it wasn't a cheap night. Also, what Italian restaurant doesn't serve complementary bread either before or during the meals? I was hoping for a bread basket to dip into my crawfish fettuccine brine that was left over. Then the portion sizes were God awful for the prices they are charging. The picture above was about the size of my hand (I'm a tiny female) and I was still hungry after. My husband was telling us how overpriced their liquors were for a single pour. $30 for a finger of liquor out of a $110 bottle? Talk about rip off.

All of the food was so delicious. This was our first time at Tutonis and my husband and I were celebrating our 5 year anniversary. We had went to the caverns in Harrisburg earlier that day so we were not all super dressed up (I had a hoodie over my sweater dress and leggings and he had jeans, an Under Armor shirt with a t-shirt over it). We watched server's continue to be more attentive to other tables who were "better" dressed than us. They did mess up with our appetizer which they did make right but it just seemed we were ignored more than other people in the restaurant. One if the first things we inquired about was the chef 5 course which you need to make a reservation for before hand. We understood that as we have both worked in restaurants. From our restaurant experience we also know about how an experience should be. Sadly we won't be returning to try the 5 course chef special. Don't go unless you are "properly" dressed or are going with your children.

Went on 3/1/24:

The food, timing, and ambiance was all perfect. Orders of apps, sides, and entrees all came out and were timed to be ready a little minutes after we finished one. We got the pork belly to start, which at first I was taken back by the only three small pieces of it, but it was absolutely delicious and worth it. Then we had the charcuterie board, which they let us choose everything that came on it, and when gouda cheese was moldy due to being aged (it was not clear in its name), they took the board back, gave us a new cheese, and a side of chorizo to make up for the mistake. All delicious, especially the side of pear jam.

For entrees, my girlfriend got the duck confit/foie gras raviolis, which they adjusted for her mold allergy (normally it has gorgonzola in there somewhere), and her dish was phenomenal, she ate it all and loved every bite. I had the pork shank, which came with TWO pork shanks, over a celery root puree that was fantastic, and the pork was so incredibly tender with every bite. The only thing I may change would be a side of some kind of sauce for it, but that is only because I love sauces with things, especially pork, but it does not take away from the dish.

For dessert, they actually gave us two small mini desserts since we were celebrating our anniversary, which was really nice and unexpected. They were the perfect mini size for something sweet after dinner, but not too much. My girlfriend got the cannoli mini dessert, and I got the panna cotta with chocolate on top, both great.

Service wise, we had Trey, and we could not of gotten anyone better. He was incredibly available, sweet, caring, on point with attending and helping us, and was so easy going with a nice sense of humor that it just made the night even more perfect. You would never of known it was his first night working there! He carried and acted as if he had been there for years.

Overall, the dinner was fantastic, service and food wise. We felt heard and cared about, never pushed in any direction or rushed at all, and would recommend the place to anyone. They also have an upstairs bar and tapas area that seems to be open later than the downstairs dinner area if you are looking for something after dinner,...

Quick story: My girlfriend and I are new to the area and just visited Tutoni's on a whim. Our dinner started off great. Zeg (I do hope I am spelling that right), our waiter, was kind, quick, patient, and knowledgeable. Our appetizer and drinks came out promptly and tasted great. However, 20 minutes or so into our meal we noticed that staff were walking in and out, cleaning up. Dread befell us. A quick Google search confirmed our fear -- we showed up right before closing and had already placed our order. It had not even occurred to us because Zeg and the kitchen staff were giving us the same dining experience as if we had shown up as they were opening. No one was rushing us out or turning the lights off around us, they were serving us as if we had shown up in the middle of the day. We apologized of course, but it was not needed for Zeg to be an amazing waiter and man of class the whole way through our dining experience.

The kitchen staff didn't deny us any pleasantries either. The smashed potatoes were unbelievably good which seems so odd to type but true all the same. The dessert was a perfect portion of delicacy. Neither of our entrees seemed prepared quickly at the expense of quality. There is plenty to be said about the food. However, you'll have to get that from someone else. We left 30 minutes after closing with our experience made by the service.

Needless to say, we will definitely be dining at Tutoni's again... Just at a more...
