Well, dang Lionel Wallace, you took the words right out of my mouth. I came on here to type up a review and you have my photos and my feelings already typed up! Everything you said was 100% truth! My story is very similar but here goes. So, I rarely venture over to the West side but happened to be over there for some reason and saw this little dive bar called the Regal Beagle (started having Three’s Company flashbacks for some reason). Well, outside this bar was smoke carrying this heavenly smell that brought me back to my Mississippi childhood of family gatherings in the backyard with daddy cooking up some grub on the grill. I told my daughter, that must be some good stuff. Flash forward a few weeks and I decided to stop in and try it out tonight after work. Well, my daughter decided she didn’t want anything because it was brisket and she says that brisket is dry and gross. I like brisket, so I picked up a couple of brisket dinners anyway. We get home and my daughter decides to try my plate. Well, Matteo, you have converted my daughter into a brisket eater. She tried my plate and said she WILL be getting her own plate next time. She has tried MANY briskets and never liked any until tonight. I must say that I too think your brisket IS the BEST that I have had in Michigan. I may even say it is the best I have ever had just because you have perfected the layers. You have the beautiful charred outside (Lionel thank you for teaching me that it is called bark) with the tender, juicy meat on the bottom, BUT that layer of fat between the char and the meat is like butter. It just melts in your mouth. The smoke was even perfect. That is something else that my daughter hates (smoked food) and you got her approval on that too. PERFECTION! I can’t end this without saying that I also LOVED the little bar. Open pool tables, friendly waitresses and the customers inside were friendly too as they greeted us because the waitress was busy. Regal Beagle and Matteo, I pledge to be a dedicated patron from today until the end of time! GREAT...
Read moreThis place gets 5 stars because of the outstanding BBQ that's been smoked in that luxury smoker outside in front of the bar. When I saw the smoker outside the bar I became very curious. I thought anyone with a smoker like that cooking on site is probably serving some good BBQ. So, I did some research hmmm! The regal beagle has new ownership, come on and stop by for a drink and some great food by Matteo BBQ!!!!!!!! ✋ wait did it Just say Matteo barbecue. The former westside BBQ pitmaster omg!! So, I looked at the menu then I saw ribs, brisket, dirty rice, pulled pork and chicken. Sounds good so far. Then I saw the one item I knew was going to seal the deal, cheesy potatoes. I knew right then it was the westside BBQ in Ypsilanti. The next day around 6:30 walked into the bar and the very friendly bartender said how can I help you? I said I'm here for some BBQ and she pointed me to the back and said” yep! Mateo is hear”. I ordered a brisket meal and a pulled pork meal. Both came with a side choice of cheesy potatoes, dirty rice and coleslaw. I chose the potatoes of course. You can also get sandwiches if you don’t want the meal. When I took my first bite of brisket I knew this was the one. It brought back so many good memories. The brisket was juicy, nice smoke (not overpowering) and the bark was so tasty and flavorful. If you want a taste of some real Texas bbq you gotta stop at the regal beagle and...
Read moreI have seen the smokers outside and have heard great things for months now. I've seen friends and acquaintances post about the Regal Beagle in recent times more then ever also. I myself had been chatting it up for others to try; but I still hadn't been myself. I changed that all last night. I was feeling a little shy going into a bar by myself late on a Friday night. But if I knew someone I wanted to say "hi" and finally see for myself what the whole expirence was about. I sat and drank a few brews, got rib tips to go and they were freaking awesome! Like Sch-moky lip smaking deliciousness awesome!!! I'm now excited to go back... maybe during the day sometime and hopefully get me some of that brisket or other hot and saucy meats for the mouth. Cheap beers slosh it down just right, a perfect BBQ buddy in my opinion. Everyone at the Regal Beagle was welcoming and super cool. I picked up conversation with some regulars and had a grand ol' time. The bathrooms were clean and I was impressed by how little graffiti was trashing the stall wall. I thought maybe it was fresh paint but there was a tag dated 2019 so maybe not. Kinda impressive, especially for a dive! Business seems well there, way better than before I was told. That makes me happy. It's killer that locals have a beefed up watering hole to dive in and congregate. I'm a local too and down with the Regal...
