First time visiting tonight. tl;dr - Excellent vegetarian food, lots of choices, fast and friendly service in diner-type setting, fed two adults and one kid (2 sides, 3 main dishes) for under $30.
When we walked in, we were asked if it was our first time (it was), so we got the full run down of their extensive menu. First menu is burgers, with six (I think) offerings, ranging from peanut crusted Cajun black bean to BBQ jackfruit. Second menu is Pizza, Subs, Salads, Wraps, and Bowls. A couple of menu boards list the proteins and sauces/ingredients you can choose from for your dish. Third menu is sides, with a pretty wide variety, and the fourth menu is Indian Street Food.
The burgers are two mix and match per order. Bigger than sliders, smaller than "full size." In fact, when I asked if they were sliders, I was told no; theirs are 4", sliders are 2.5". Sliders have an official measurement. You learn something new every day. I went with the Cajun black bean and the BBQ jackfruit, both of which were excellent. The jackfruit had a great spicy kick to it, and the black bean burger wasn't dry, which I've found with many attempts at that burger.
Our other adult got the samosas, which were incredibly flavorful. I've not had many of those before, so I don't have much to compare it to, but she was very happy with them and I would absolutely order them for myself.
Our kiddo got the "meatball" pizza, which was a nice sized little flatbread pie. I think she was expecting actual meatballs, so the vegballs kinda threw her, but her mom and I tried them and agreed they were pretty tasty.
One decent sized basket of masala french fries and a basket of sweet potato fries were ordered and enjoyed, and a couple of fresh mint and something (my apologies to the woman there who told me at least three times exactly what) lemonades complimented our meals.
Our total was just over $28, which I felt was absolutely fair for the quality of the food. Filling, but not "roll me out the door" sizes.
The restaurant is located in a long time campus coney building, so you get a little cozy with the folks at tables on either side of you, but there were five families there and it didn't feel like you were packed in too bad.
I have zero qualms about giving this place a five star for our first visit. I'm a carnivore at heart, but I can't wait to go back and get experimental with some of the menu items with words I'm unfamiliar with. The Indian menu...
Read moreThis used to be my favorite vegan restaurant in town, but the food quality has gone incredibly down hill.
I went to order my usual quesedilla, coleslaw, fries, and a ginger tonic meal and noticed that the quesdilla order now lists "Grilled chik'n, sautéed onions, bell peppers, and shredded cheese folded in a large flour tortilla". My quesdilla came with just cheese and chicken with no onions or peppers to be found. Sad as I was excited for this change.
The coleslaw on the side has changed from a sweet, fresh summer treat to being almost sour and incredibly peppery.
My ginger tonic had almost a half inch of sediment on the bottom that made it feel like I was drinking sand through the straw.
My masala fries came undercooked and crunchy on the inside but well seasoned which made it so that at least some of them could be enjoyed.
In all, what I expected to be my usual delightful picnic brunch turned into a dissapointing $30 let down. It pains me to post this as I have been an incredible supporter of gora's over the years, but I do not think I will be ordering from them again, at...
Read moreI got the Greek chick pea wrap with quinoa. Phenomenal flavor and ingredient freshness. Server was very friendly. The price seems high for a single wrap (a little over $12), but the wrap was generously stuffed and incredibly filling. For me, this wrap could easily replace the Shawarma wrap I used to love before going meatless. The pickle flavor is perfect, and tge quinoa were somehow well-behaved in the wrap and didn't wander at all. For that, I wish they would give me some cooking lessons. Maybe a recipe book? Food for thought. Overall, I was highly impressed.
On the downside, I hope this team finds a better location to setup shop. The interior still has a musty, old diner look. It's not dilapidated by any means, but the decor and storefront DO NOT reflect the quality of service and food. It just looks and feels a bit rundown, even compared to other Ypsi stores. I nearly passed up the opportunity to eat here, thinking to myself that a vegan restaraunt that looks like this can't be any good. I hope other customers also give Gora's Grill a chance to...
