Lumberjack's of Yuba City is a great diner in the traditional sense. While there were other patrons in the restaurant, there were plenty of tables available when we got there at about 7:15pm on this Wednesday evening.
Although Lumberjack's has been in town for a few years, it was our first time going there for dinner. We had eaten at the restaurant that was in the same location not long before it became Lumberjack's and it had left a bad taste in our mouths figuratively and literally. Because of this, we weren't in a hurry to go back fearing the new establishment was only another name and menu change. The sour experience was so bad that we had taken the whole address out of our menu of places to frequent.
However, a friend had recommended that we give the current establishment a try and we're glad he did. Not only were we greeted with a smile and seated right away but, our waitress came over almost immediately asking for our beverage order.
We didn't have long to wait for our beverages or our meal. Hubby had the chicken fried steak and I, the taco salad. He enjoyed his dish starting with the garden salad. What was different about the salad was the ranch dressing. It had no vinegar taste. As a waitress in my youth, this is a telling note of the food for me. Any and all bottled ranch has a vinegar taste and I am spoiled to a fresh ranch only. Yes, the ranch dressing was great. As for his chicken fried steak, he said it was really good and he was unable to finish it all.
As for my taco salad, it was served in what I would describe as rustic fashion. The oversized fried flour tortilla bowl seated on the plate was clearly made fresh on the premise. Though it was a bit oily for my taste and unsalted, it was tasty nonetheless. From the bottom of the bowl up there was tender unseasoned and not greasy (or dry) hamburger meat with just a bit of char. Above the hamburger meat was a bed of lettuce topped by a layer of chopped tomato and finely shredded cheese. Above the shredded cheese was a dollop of sour cream beside a same size dollop of freshly mashed avocado. Normally this would be covered in the chipotle dressing but I had it on the side as I'm not much for salad dressings. While this might not be for everyone, I enjoyed it very much. We'll be putting this address back into our rotation of eateries we frequent. 👍
Please keep in mind that my review ranking is for a diner experience, not drive thru, fast food, family chain or fine dining. This is strictly my ranking for a good old fashioned greasy spoon in the middle of town complete with large portions, friendly and fast service in a relaxed setting complete with a pie counter that was mostly empty by the time we got there. You may want to go earlier than we did if you want some banana or coconut cream pie.
As a final note, the handle of the first door you open to walk into the establishment is a very cool looking axe into the door. Kudos to the person who came up with that.

Read moreWent into our first experience here with high hopes. We had heard the breakfast was very good, and the portions were very large.
My first impression looking at the menu was that everything was priced expensively, it was all just under $12 for most meals. At first I assumed this was due to larger portion sizes. My ending conclusion was that while some of the portion sizes were large, a lot of the plates were just very overpriced. I now understand why I couldn't easily find prices on the website menu before going in.
I got the veggie omelette with pesto hollandaise. The sauce was good, the omelette was unimpressive. My portion size was very large and generous. There were way too many onions, and the eggs tasted over done. As a veggie omelette fanatic, I was very let down. I don't spend money on eating out a lot, and so when I do of course I want it to be better than I could do at home. This wasnt it. The hash browns were great, the omelette was severely lacking.
Boyfriend got the eggs benedict. He didn't like it, which sucks. It's not hard to make an excellent eggs benedict, but his was disappointing. His portion size wasn't worth the uniformly inflated price.
Baby #1 got the biscuits and gravy plate, the full size one. Also not worth the inflated price as far as the portion goes. The gravy was bland and not that good, the McCormick's packets we use at home have more flavor.
Baby #2 got the pancake kids menu option. Not terrible portion due to the good price on the kids menu items. Only 1 pancake.. but it was cheaper? So I guess that's okay? It was of decent quality.
I don't know maybe dinner there is better, we sat next to the dessert case and that monster chocolate cake looks decadent. It looked like an in person version of the infamous Matilda chocolate cake. But our breakfast experience wasn't good and they won't...
Read moreOur first restaurant experience in Yuba City. Lumberjack’s looked so exciting from the street, the log cabin look, the giant lumberjack statue, its all so fun! The parking lot was crowded and there was a line out the door so we were intrigued! The wait for three of us was only 10 minutes, we were seated in a roomy booth and our waitress came by to take our drink orders. She was friendly, but service was just OK. I get it they are busy and had lots of people to wait on. The menu has a good variety of options, breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. Pricing was good, probably a lot cheaper if we came during the week. They offer lots of specials Mon-Fri, for the 3 of us the bill was $58 before military discount $54 afterwards. I wasn’t impressed with my food I ordered, I had a skillet breakfast (Potatoes/bell pepper/onion/cheese/ 2 scrambled eggs/sausage/ham covered in country gravy and two slices of toast on the side) It sounded so delicious, but fell short for me. It was SOOO BLAND! My gravy had a film on it like it had been sitting there, my food wasn’t hot, just about room temp. I had to pile on the pepper,Tabasco and ketchup to get some flavor into my food. I wouldn’t order again. The rest of the table said the pancakes were ok, eggs were tasty, and the sourdough burger was really good! Also the garden salad was too, just way too much bacon it overpowered the salad. We want to come back just to try dinner or lunch. But for now, not an OMG...
