Escape the Hotel Buffet: A Classic Hoi An Local Eatery Worth Discovering

Tucked away from the tourist-thronged streets of Hoi An, this no-frills local gem is where the true flavors of central Vietnam come alive. When you’ve had your fill of polished hotel dishes and crave something raw, real, and deeply rooted in tradition, venture here.

The star of the show is the steamed pork belly — not your typical bacon, but a silky, melt-in-your-mouth delicacy. Slowly steamed until the fat is perfectly rendered, each thin slice is a soft, savory ribbon of flavor. You’ll wrap it yourself in delicate rice paper, layering in crisp herbs, cucumber, and fresh greens, then roll it tight and dip it in your choice of nuoc mam (fish sauce) or mam nem, the punchy, funky fermented anchovy sauce that locals love and outsiders rarely dare to appreciate.

This isn’t a place for the casual tourist. No air conditioning, and no attempt to soften the flavors for foreign palates. But for those willing to lean in — to eat with their hands, sweat a little, and savor something unfamiliar — it’s unforgettable. The energy is loud, communal, and unapologetically local. You’re not just eating here — you’re participating in a slice of daily Vietnamese life.

Tips: • Come early for lunch — ingredients are fresh and the best cuts go fast. • Ask for bánh tráng mềm (soft rice paper) if you’re not into the dry kind. • Try the side of pickled green banana or starfruit — it cuts the richness perfectly. • Don’t expect unauthentic food, and do expect warm smiles and...

I highly recommend this restaurant. Firstly, it's on the outskirts of the old town and therefore really quiet/not busy which is nice. We got the roasted pork belly rolls and the mini banh xeos and both dishes were so delicious! I really love the concept of the mini pancakes. I'm Cambodian and grew up eating banh xeo but not with the rice paper. I've been enjoying eating them in Vietnam rolled up in the rice paper and I think the mini pancakes are perfect for that. It ensures you get the perfect ratio of everything and the pancakes stay super crispy. They're also much easier to roll this way. The dipping sauce is also really good and I love all the herbs/lettuce/chilis/sauce etc you get with each dish. The employees are also very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend for a great meal!

Note: I took the picture after we had started eating the pork rolls already, you get more pork than...

I came here to eat since it was close my hotel. Searched for some noodles and found this restaurant. It had very good prices for Hoi An. Many places charge prices much higher than just because of the tourists coming. Ain’t no local paying those prices.

We came in to the restaurant during lunch time. Not many people there eating. The lady working there immediately greeted us and took us to our table. She immediately turned on the strong fan for us. Very warm welcome in the blistering heat. (Beware of loose napkins. They tend to fly…)

I ordered this 40k bowl of bún mắm heo quay. It was good. Reminded me of my moms own version. Fresh bowl of noodles. Not a big portion in any means. I ordered 2 bowls.

Even the toilet was quite decently clean. Not taken for granted in Vietnam…

I’d definitely recommending everyone staying in the area to try...
