Having completed the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb a year earlier, my impression is that this would be a lighter version of that. Having experienced it I feel that it's something totally different.
The briefing was well handled and conducted. The equipping and safety briefing were detailed enough to keep us engaged, but brief enough that our attention didn't slip. After we got our gear on, we made the walk through the park up towards Matagarup Bridge.
Personally I haven't been too thrilled with heights for a while now, so the climb was less tiring and more nerve-wracking for me. I'm glad that my daughter was such a good sport and volunteered to lead the group at the front (same as she did in Syndey). While the trip up was pretty safe, I'd say that looking down always makes my knees wobbly. That said, the only real challenges on the climb were the criss-crossing beams on the bridge which occasionally required us to contort and squeeze through the spaces really carefully. While I'm not the smallest of guys and I gave myself a few headshots, by the time we reached the top we were no worse for wear.
Next came the descent which was to zipline all the way from the top of the bridge to the climb centre, crossing the Swan River along the way. I was a bit apprehensive at this point, as my guides indicated that as the last guy and the biggest, I may have to climb back down if the weather conditions were not ideal. When I saw the whole group zipline across the river before me, I didn't really mind as thoughts of plunging into the river gripped me intermittently.
Then again, I paid for Matagarup Zip+Climb and not Climb+Climb....
Fortunately for me, my guides kept checking in with their base team to confirm if the wind conditions were suitable for me to take the zipline down. Finally I was cleared to go and after getting onboard, it was a quick trip back to the climb centre across the Swan River for me. It was over in less than a minute and I could tell that my momentum was probably moving me along faster than the rest of my group. Once I got down from the zipline, we went in to de-equip and that was the conclusion of an enjoyable experience.
Kudos to our guides Nik and Emma for guiding us throughout the journey. They were easygoing, funny when they could and helped to keep us all at ease. Special thanks to Emma for securing me the ride down when the weather seemed to suggest that I would be making the climb down.
I would recommend this for those who want some exertion and exhilaration, plus a nice view of the Swan River and most of Perth. The team was really friendly and helpful, and helped to make the experience...
Read moreJust had an amazing experience today. Throughly enjoyed it. The two ladies that ran the 22 June 2:00pm zip plus climb experience were amazing along with the really competent landing staff. My only suggestion to improve the experience would be to evaluate other continuous belay systems for the climb up as I noticed both young and big strong participants struggling with it. The staff said get angry with it you’re not here to make friends with it which despite being slightly comical I think really is a sign that the operators should look at implementing another continuous belay system. At the beginning the two ladies teamed up together and spent a good minute putting all there force pushing and pulling my pulley before finally getting it to go into onto the cable. During the experience one of the ladies sprayed mine with WD 40 which despite trying hard to make things better the kind gesture didn’t really make any difference. Maybe management should look at what they installed at the Sydney harbour bridge climb. A simple Zipline style roller trolley that had to be rotated sideways at certain intervals to catch you if you fell. I appreciate the added safety Benefit of the current system because it can catch you at any position but in the interest of guest enjoyment I think management should look at other possible fall arrest systems The only other thing is it would be awesome to Zipline in the prone position. Overall though great experience but as a local would only do this once because of the price. Maybe add a Perth local annual membership/ season pass discount...
Read moreA not to be missed activity in Perth (for those not scared of heights that is..) From the word go, the staff were very professional & helpful and it is clear that safety is a number one priority.
I headed on the Zip+Climb tour, the guides were very friendly & knowledgeable about the local area. Now, I’m in no way a fitness freak 😂 I’m at the higher end of the scale when it comes to the ‘weight limit’ but even for me the climb up the 312 stairs to the viewing platform was easy - I put myself at the back of the group for the climb as I didn’t want to hold anyone back but I found myself keeping up with the group no problem at all - it’s a fairly slow climb taking in the views and listening to the guide talk about the local area - it’s more than just a Zip+Climb, it’s also a great guided tour. Groups go up the bridge in a maximum of 12 so it doesn’t feel busy or crowded up there at all.
Photos are taken at all steps along the way which the staff sent out promptly to my email along with a great video (see photos attached).
The Zip line down was GREAT fun 😀 All in all, 10 / 10 for a great experience which I will definitely be recommending to friends & family that visit Perth & would definitely do again myself - the only thing is, when I booked I had to book waaay in advance as it is that popular - so if you look on the website and see a free date that suits you don’t hold back on booking as booking slots fill up quickly.
Cheers to the team at Matagarup Zip+Climb for a great...
