Went to see Alex Williamson's "Sin On My Face" comedy show and the venue didn't detract from the experience but enhanced it! While I can't comment on any other type of performance with credibility, it's an ideal venue for stand up comedy. The stage is small for things such as musicals but for stand up, it's the right size for comedians to walk around to make their performances pop and the heritage and intricacies of the venue should be maintained for all to enjoy which they are. There are two floors of seating and toilets are easy to find mid-performance (even after a couple drinks). I'm not sure how mobility accessible the bottom floor is (I had tickets on the top floor) but the staff seem nice and attentive so contacting the Theatre Royal if there are mobility concerns would be a wise move. There are bars on both levels with areas within the Theatre Royal but outside the theatre itself modern and functional. The ushers are great at what they do too. If you want to go to an event at the Theatre Royal but are concerned about the venue itself, you have minimal reason to be so I hope you enjoy any future events you...

My last experience at TheatreRoyal, I was impressed with dynamic CircusOz. The Ushers kindly ingratiate their purpose to the Theatre Royals' standard.

The Theater Royal has personal day tours regarding its History, being Australias' oldest Theatre. When performing there in the late 80s, the old caretaker at the time revealed to us few, deep below the stage are several sandstone crypts of Hobarts first ordained 6 Bishops or Holy men. Feels very Nosferatsu, {vampire king}.

From 1834 the nearby pubs patrons would stumble in to harrass, sometimes fight bawdy performers. Today we may appear more dignified but we all share the same closely intimate Theatrical space with todays modern performers that few Theatres allow. Performers also like sharing that radiance.

Hobarts'TheatreRoyal always leaves you feeling you've just been imbued with a...

Sadly the refurb. has not altered the seating in the 'old' theatre to tiering, nor widened and thus improved the stage area and audience viewing. It could be so much better; the new 'Studio theatre' is excellent, the foyers are open and accommodating, however there are STILL not enough toilets. Why the limited amount of cubicles in the Ladies Powder Room? Such a shame to spend so much money and the Theatre still be lacking; lovely to keep the beautiful decor but with modern styling, this could have remained but be upgraded to a much...

Wonderful old theatre, the atmosphere of days gone by as your climbing the steps up to the dress circle level, before you enter the theatre here they have and are completing new areas, this area with bar, flows just right between the old and new. Seats are comfortable, wider than I imagined. Handy hint don't go booking the cheaper seats in this area, the ones advertised as restricted viewing area as your can't see if performance has top level scenes and in some seats you have restricted viewing from poles.Next time I'm booking the better seats.

The Studio Theatre is an intimate venue with seating on 3 sides. The is a small balcony as well. The large wooden features give the space a wonderful acoustic. It is a warm and clear. I saw Vince Jones and Paul Grabowski performing in the Festival of Voices and it was the perfect venue. It’s located on the 4th level of the complex and there is a lit or stairs. Only drawback I could find was that there was a water fountain but no cups and the bar did not provide water unless you asked.

A wonderful blending of old and new architecture, with the atmosphere of the original theatre retained, whilst allowing for easier access to the various levels. It feels grand, yet also intimate. There is certainly variability in seat views to stage, with some views obscured by structural columns, so take a bit of care choosing your seats. The new bar and foyer areas certainly make socialising, both pre and post show, a far more comfortable affair than the old setup.
