🇦🇺 Tasmania | 5 Days 4 Nights Self-Drive Itinerary 🚗💨

We selected Mövenpick as our base for our 5 night stay in Hobart for our honeymoon. It is the first time we have stayed at a Mövenpick. We were so taken back by the professionalism and service offered by the staff. It really felt like a luxury experience staying at the hotel and certainly made us feel like we were on a special adventure. Chef Glen from Tesoro Modern Italian attached to the hotel was an absolute gentleman. A skilled professional who came out and had a chat with us at the bar. He gave us local tips on food and wine culture and we were lucky enough to sample his brand new menu. He treated us with his brand new Coconut Yogurt Panacotta with Tasmanian Peaches and grains. It was sublime. We ate at Tesoro every morning for breakfast and three nights for dinner. We did not have a bad meal and not one negative encounter with staff - true professionals, in a lovely ambient resteraunt that we could retire too after busy days exploring Tassie. Valet parking was never late and reception were extremely helpful. We made use of the Savoy Baths and Day Spa next door for $30 each one evening which was so nice. No complaints to make at all. Things to keep in mind - maybe some Tassie wine on the included package wine list. In saying this, we very much enjoyed the wine, beer and cider we tasted. Already have local beers and ciders on the package list. Valet parking does add up in cost over the stay. Nevertheless, it was so easy and a great service for $35 a day (can park and return 24 hrs a day, unlimited times for that price). It’d be nice have a secondary option to park elsewhere, as renting a vehicle is pricey in the first instance. But this may be difficult being a main city. Mövenpick gets a 10/10 for service, cleanliness, professionalism, food and beverage quality and value. Body wash and soaps were lovely. In-room Nespresso coffee machine and the tea included were awesome. Loved being able to chrome cast our iPad to the TV at night. Great info on local Tassie options within the TV menu. An 8/10 for a great location, accessibility/parking and facilities. The gym was lovely and clean with filtered water, a shower and gym towels. Unfortunately, we did not make it back for chocolate hour as we were out on day trips - but we will be sure to give it a go next time. Tesoro Modern Italian with Chef Glen and staff recieves a 10/10 from us. Would recommend Mövenpick Hobart and Tesoro for any traveller to Tassie. Has definitely given me interest in The Accor Plus membership.

Suitable for the business trips. Located in CBD, few minutes walk to the wharfs/Salamanca Market. Only authorized vehicles can access the road. Just drive through and park for 5 minutes in front of the hotel. Neaby undercover carparks are always full. Not easy to find a spot at the street. Prefered Velvet parking $35/day. Have to inform reception 20 mins before you need the car. GYM and day spa on level 1. Only one Italian restaurant on the ground floor. Free chocolate sessions (3:30 - 4:30 pm) open for all people in the lobby. The restaurant prepares the chocolate desserts. --- 8/10 (location), 7/10 (facilities) Room: Basic classic bed room on level 4. Dark corridor and room. It's hard to find to insert the room card to activate the electricity. One window (no view mentioned on its website) is facing the next building in close distance. No natural light. Stylish interior design. USB ports are available. Nepresso coffee maker with 4 capsules. A box of Tea bags with various flavors. Limited choices of snacks and wine in minibar and fridge. Chocolate on the price list was missing. We asked the reception immediately. We were told no chocolate at all because of the free chocolate sessions 3:30-4:30pm at the lobby. There is a TV, a small round table and 2 chairs. Two standard single beds with 2 pillows each. Comfortable. Open wardrobe. No drawers. Not much space for bulky baggage. Washroom is ok, not small in ratio. Hand-held shower. Basic amenities are available. --- 7/10 (room). Staff: very nice and polite. Welcoming receptionists. --- 7.3/10 Room Clean Up: Not enough staff for room service. Did room clean up after 3pm (we requested only twice in 4 night stays). One trash wasn't empty once. They refilled tea bags randomly - didn't refill the tea bags we consumed. Forgot to refill tissue. --- 6/10

It is my regular hotel when in Hobart however I feel it is loosing a bit of its shine, I spent more time in the hotel this trip & noticed a few more details then previous stays. The customer service has been very inconsistent across my stays.

The location is great & the hotel is modern & clean, walking distance to lots of places, a chemist warehouse next to the hotel, shopping mall across the road with a Target, woolies is close by, there is also a bus terminal outside. Be careful your skybus driver actually knows where the hotel is and doesn’t drop you off at the wrong place & you have to walk lugging suitcases which has happened on a previous visit.

If you arrive on a late flight the hotel does lock its doors & you need to press a button to get in so keep that in mind. Check in was quick and easy for me as I arrived late & was the only person checking in.

I was upgraded from a classic room to a superior room. The rooms no longer offer complimentary water you need to go to level 2 to get that. keep that in mind when arriving late. I did mention in one of my previous reviews to the hotel they should offer water in the mini bar not just alcohol and there was a bottle there this visit so not sure if they have changed the offerings or just listened to my feedback. The interior rooms are exactly that no natural light so if that is important to you pay for the room you want.

The room itself suited me, bed was comfortable, no noise this stay and the plumbing worked, I find it so odd that the shower gel is in the opposite wall so you are walking out of the shower to get the shower gel shampoo etc

Breakfast first day service was attentive & quick, they do have a good selection for breakfast with a hot choice and also the continental. 2nd day my coffee order was wrong & service was a bit slow, 3rd day I had to chase them to place my breakfast order. They didn’t seem to be as quick as previous stays with refilling items in the continental section compared to previous stays.

Dinner the first night Philip was great and remembered me from the previous month as I had celebrated my birthday that month, service was adequate nothing to stand out about. 2nd night it was a bit slow with service yet the staff had time to sample drinks behind the bar.

If you are after a hotel to sit and relax at the bar & have a drink this is not the hotel for you. There is nowhere really to sit & enjoy a drink there is some couches & chairs in two areas however they get taken up very quickly & are right in the lobby so as people are walking in to check in you they walk straight past you. It is not a relaxing experience.

The restaurant is not accommodating at all with sitting there if the space in the lobby is taken up. We mentioned we were going to have dinner it was right in 5pm and the response was well what time are you eating when we asked if we could sit and have a drink. they were setting up for the dinner, we did sit but I found it extremely odd that at 5pm there is limited space to sit as the restaurant doesn’t open till 6pm.

The food is delicious here, I had the pasta with the pork and fennel sausage and it was delicious.

This time around I used the Valet parking for one night ($35 per day) there is limited spots to park outside the hotel 3 maybe 4 spots depending on the size of the vehicles. It is supposed to be 5 minute parking however people certainly overstay that I have seen many rangers marking tyres. In those limited spots you are fighting with the buses moving about as it is a terminal at the front of the hotel which you need to move around to get to the car spots and also courier drivers parked there to deliver to the nearby shops. It can be a limited with spots and overwhelming depending on when you arrive with congestion. We notified reception to pick up car and we had it back within 15 minutes however it was 10pm at night.

I can’t comment on chocolate hour as based on the nightmare that the Melbourne hotel is I avoid it...

Stayed overnight during the weekend. My group of friends booked 4 seperate rooms.

We arrived at approximately 10am and there was only 1 staff member doing check-in. During check in I could see the phone ringing constanrtly and as the staff was busy serving customers, it appeared to ring out. I should have seen this as a sign of things to come.

Used the Valet parking service and left my keys with reception. You have to park in the 5 minute parking outside but they don't really explain or advertise it anywhere. Otherwise it was fairly good value for one (1) full day of valet parking.

I was told they need 15 minutes notice if i needed my car so call reception ahead so they can arrange for it.

Went out for a walk to see the markets and when we were done and heading back to the hotel, we tried to call in order to ask for the car to be ready. I tried calling 6 times and no one picked up and it continued to ring continously. I ended up asking reception when i got back to the hotel. I noted to the receptionist that I tried to call multiple times and the response I got was merely "sorry, we must have been busy".

Later on at 11pm my group returned and we went to ask for late checkout. The staff member offered and processed late checkout for 3 out of 4 of the rooms to have an extra hour, and then told me that the housekeeping would be upset with him and he couldn't do it for all of us. I note we all were a mix of gold and silver accor members. I wonder if housekeeping would still "be upset" if I had offered to pay for late checkout.

The receptionist told me I could call tomorrow morning and they would see what they could do. (Given my attempts earlier in the day, I didn't expect much). He didn't even check my room or membership / status level. As a top tier member of another well known hotel chain, im astounded he was willing to reject my request without even ascertaining my status.

I tried to call in the morning from my room, and as expected it continued to ring and out I never managed to reach the front desk. Given the issues i had experienced so far, I didn't bother to take the gamble to downstairs and ask again.

Given we were travelling as a group a few of my friends ended up checking out with me and went out to kill time before our flight.

I think it's pretty silly to offer late checkout for only some of a group travelling together since its likely that they would need to check out together.

In any case, the service at the hotel soured my experience in what I understood to be one of the more expensive hotels in Hobart and less that what I would expect of a...

I stayed 4 nights with Movenpick and had enjoyed my stay overall, with the exception of 2 incidents on the last 2 days that made the experience less pleasant.

Let’s start with the good: Great location. Less than 5 minutes walk to Skybus stop which is opposite the tourist and info centre. If you are doing day tours, the tourist and info centre is also the main pick-up point. It’s also easily walkable to many other attractions like brook street pier, museum, Salamanca market and Elizabeth Mall is just a stone throw away from the hotel. Good room size as compared to other hotels in the vicinity. Good service. I appreciate that they processed my check in even before the room was ready and brought my luggage to the room once it was ready. Nothing new but not many hotel does it these days. Clean. Good housekeeping for 3 nights but on my last night, towels were not hung up (just placed on bed), amenities not restocked and drinking cup left unwashed. It think it is important to standardise housekeeping standards.

The not-so-pleasant experience: Besides the one-off housekeeping incident, a miscommunication occured during my stay. It is related to the complimentary chocolate treats, which I now know it’s called “Chocolate hour” (complimentary) and not “Chocology” ($39). When I was checking in, chocolate hour was not mentioned. I chanced upon it in the lift advertisement but didnt manage to read in details as it switched over to another advertisement quickly. I called concierge wanting to find out more but no one picked up the call. So I googled “Movenpick” and “chocolate” and found out about Chocology, which I later saw again in the check-in letter. I had thus assumed the complimentary chocolate session was called Chocology. The check-in letter stated that booking is required so I called concierge on my last night to book.

So I had Chocology the next day and was told to pay $39. That was when I was told the complimentary chocolate treats is called “Chocolate hour” which was not mentioned in the letter. After much explanation of the causes of miscommunication, the concierge has kindly waived it off but the whole experience was not very pleasant. I hope that Movenpick would consider making it clearer in the check-in letter by writing down both types of chocolate session. This will leave no room for confusion.

For those who are sensitive to sounds, the walls are really thin. I’ve read other reviews about wall-facing windows and clock tower noises but I was lucky enough to get a room facing the mountains and away from...
