Whoever developed the quesadilla has never been to Mexico and, I suspect, never eaten a quesadilla. It was basically untoasted tortillas with too many black beans served with a dull knife. There was no flavour. No interest. There wasn’t anything redeeming about this dish. When people say Hobart has a good food scene, this place isn’t what they’re talking about. My friend had the greens and egg. It was under-seasoned, under-portioned and overly bland. I’d give it one star, but the coffee tasted fine despite their inability to make a cappuccino: “all coffee is either white or black.” Sure.
Edit: In response to the owner's response, a few things.
First, small business owners are not immune to critique. There's not some rule that because a business isn't owned by a multi-national, it shouldn't be held to account for the quality of food in alignment with the prices being charged.
Second, the owner decided to compare Pilgrim to Subway rather than taking the feedback and addressing the actual problem, the quesadilla — which other reviewers have complained about as well. I didn't invite that comparison; of the 90+ reviews I have posted, they chose to compare their business to Subway. That's weird. My review, from over two years ago, was, in its entirety, "it's a Subway." Subway delivered the product that they were selling. A cheap, tasty, meal, provided in a timely manner at a reasonable price with a smile. Reviews are on a sliding scale. I certainly didn't apply the same expectations to Pilgrim as I did to Faro when paying $175 a plate. But, if Subway made the quesadilla that Pilgrim did and charged me $8, let alone the $24 Pilgrim did, it too would have received 1 star.
Third, I did ask for sprinkles. For some reason, that's what a cappuccino is in Australia. I was told it's either white or black. Good coffee, though.
Fourth, I didn't one-star the venue; I gave it two stars. I can get a good coffee anywhere, but I went out for brunch, and the main attraction — the food — didn't measure up.
Finally, I wasn't having a bad day at all; aside from that quesadilla, it was a great day. Hobart is an...
Read moreLots of coffee shops in Hobs, this is one I want to love but not quite there yet. Been here many times living/working in the area, and the takeaway experience has been better than my dine in experiences.
Pros: cinnamon rolls, frickin worth coming here just for those. Locally roasted Shake a Leg coffee (yum), lots of seating and aesthetic especially for somewhere in the CBD.
Cons: the service tends to make the experience disappointing rather consistently. The most obvious and well trafficked entrance takes you in to the hustle and bustle of the counter and coffee machine, where you can look at all the delicious pastries, toastie, and coffee options. However, if you want to dine in and see a menu, you’re sent to a back dining area, where I’ve often had to wait awhile to be seated and to see a menu (but it’s never clear you’re meant to do this, no signage or anything). The menu does not list the available pastries or the toasties or breakfast rolls on the takeaway menu, which to be honest often look pretty good too haha and would love to have as an option on the menu to consider. To sit outside in the picnic tables that get nice sun in the morning you can’t actually do that if dining in; I was told they cannot offer dining services to the other side of the cafe or the front of it even though I’ve had coffee and toasties out there before 🤷♀️ Staff at the front main area have almost always been aloof and rude 🥲 Menu food is ok but not great.
After giving it a lot of goes I think sticking with the pastries and takeaway options and staying in the front area of the cafe offers the best experience including value and taste! Don’t usually bother writing reviews unless it’s an amazing experience to offer all the good vibes, but so badly want to have better experiences here and hopefully some feedback can help with making a few easy changes that would drastically elevate the overall customer...
