The Ipswich Art Gallery is an absolute gem, especially for families! It's truly remarkable how this regional gallery has become a national leader in providing exceptional experiences for children. What sets it apart is its dedicated Children's Gallery – the first of its kind in Australia – which consistently offers engaging, hands-on exhibitions designed specifically for young minds.
Forget hushed, "don't touch" environments; here, creative play is central to learning. From interactive installations like the "Clay Creature Feature" where kids sculpt their own fantastical beings, to past favorites like building with LEGO or exploring light and sound, the programs are imaginative and foster genuine artistic expression. "Toddler Time" sessions are a huge hit, incorporating sensory play and song for the littlest visitors.
With ever-changing exhibitions and most activities being free, the Ipswich Art Gallery provides an accessible and stimulating cultural outing. It's a place where kids are encouraged to be seen and heard, making it a perfect destination for a fun and enriching family day...
Read moreWe've just been back and saw the Don’t get too comfortable exhibition and had a 'slow looking' tour with Elsie. It was really inspiring to have some guided looking to help us interpret for ourselves rather than the more traditional being told what we're seeing. The gallery is doing these regularly and I thoroughly recommend them for anyone regardless of your 'knowledge' of art!!!
Just went to the Arriving Slowly exhibit which tied in perfectly with the Mark Rothko & Agnes Martin loan paintings. This is possibly the best exhibit of modern abstract art I've seen in Australia. Staff were all unerringly LOVELY. Offering to bring chairs so we could spend some time with our favourite artists.
The children's area was excellent and really inclusive and interactive.
There were several other interesting pieces around the gallery also. Definitely worth the trip from Brisbane again (particularly as the Rothko and Martin are there for...
Read moreGreat gallery. It is in a central location. There is street parking on both sides of the building. The feel of the place is lovely. Warmth is added by the use of tempered paint with timber trims in stairs and other features. The gallery features local historic pieces as well as local artists and unique stories. In addition there are frequent national exhibitions. Currently Arthur Boyd -one of the most renowned Australian painters features in Landscape of the Soul (as well as a few paintings by his grandmother and father)
The staff at the entrance are welcoming. In addition there is a small but worthy gift shop. There is also a wall of local information brochures including maps, restaurant guides and flyers on up coming events.
Highly recommend you get along regardless of your age or party number. Outside there are eateries, coffee shops and a park and garden area to be enjoyed. Weekends can see market stalls in...
