After a good 20 years of living here I saw an add on TV advertising the footscray market. I thought, cool! I gotta go see it, seeing how I've been to many other markets many times. Laverton market, Caribbean market, Gibson Market, St Kilda Market, Queen Vic Market, Eynesbury market. Baccus Marsh Market. Even been to the Salamanca market in Tassie. With all that said, Caribbean market was a far drive from the west but totally worth it and it's totally sad they decided to close it for good. Laverton market use to be nearly on par with the Caribbean market in my opinion but in recent years even before covid, it's started going downhill a bit. Markets are a great destination for families wanting to get the hell out of the house on weekends and walk around and maybe find a good bargain.

There was a lot of food at the Footscray market. Seafood, seafood, people serving seafood. If you love seafood, it might be worth your while! Parking was easy to find and inexpensive. I think cost me like a dollar on the weekend. We didn't stay long. We went, we saw and we weren't overly impressed. It appeared as though they were working on extending it. Perhaps after the new renovations and more shops are opened it may be bigger and better. Other than seafood, they had a few butcher's, some cheapy shops, produce/fruit and veg. Yeah...mainly food at this one. One or two places the food looked ok but honestly, we just kept going. So not my favourite market at all but not my least favourite Market, that prize still stays with the St Kilda Market. Which should be named the St Kilda "Craft" market. Great if your into crafts and some art but not great when you hear the word "market" and bring the family along to pay a fortune for parking and be bitterly disappointed to find just a few arts n craft stalls. Not really a market is it? More a small gathering of stalls. I remember being so bored I think we actually went twice, think'n maybe there will be more this time round....no...no there wasn't. Footscray is...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Vibrant Market with Fresh Produce and Great Prices

Footscray Market is a fantastic place for fresh produce, diverse cuisine, and affordable shopping. Located conveniently near Footscray Station, it’s a bustling market that offers an authentic cultural experience, reflecting the area’s strong Vietnamese, African, and multicultural influences.

The variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood here is impressive, with prices often much lower than supermarkets. The butchers and fishmongers provide excellent cuts and fresh catches daily. If you enjoy cooking Asian or African dishes, this market is perfect for finding specialty ingredients that are hard to get elsewhere.

One of the highlights is the selection of food stalls serving delicious Vietnamese, Chinese, and other Asian street food. The bánh mì, pho, and roast meats are must-tries, offering authentic flavors at reasonable prices. There are also bakeries and dessert shops with tasty treats like pandan waffles and egg tarts.

While the market can get crowded, especially on weekends, the lively atmosphere is part of its charm. The vendors are friendly and often happy to share cooking tips or recommendations. Parking can be tricky, so taking public transport is a good idea.

Overall, Footscray Market is a gem for fresh food lovers and bargain hunters. Whether you’re shopping for groceries or just grabbing a quick bite, it’s a must-visit spot in...

My family have been buying meat and vegetables from Footscray market for decades, remembering coming here as a kid, although back then there were alot more businesses on site. In my opinion still a great place to visit for the weekly shop of meat, fruit and veg all at fair and reasonable prices as well as great quality and customer service that seems to be slowly getting lost in the modern times of "self service checkouts", personally I think it's nice when your butcher or green grocer etc, knows you by name, knows what you usually order and so on, or maybe I'm just old school. Also on site are various restaurants and food stalls for a quick bite. Worth a look if you have never been, Quick tip! Saturday mornings are the best time to visit to get the best produce the vendors have to offer... And Saturday afternoon's when the market is winding down at roughly 2:30-3:30pm is the best time to grab a bargain from some of the butchers and seafood vendors as they mark down most of their remaining trays in an effort to sell everything for the day I'm guessing, for example, on numerous occasions I have bought a tray of pork chops of decent cut and size, 6-7 pieces for $5-7, also garlic chilli sausages at roughly 2kg for $4-6 a tray. 2kg tray of chicken wings for $3,Etc etc... many bargains to be found if your timing is right on Saturday afternoon's!!

Footscray Market is traditional in the truest sense of the word. One can hear this in the yodelling of its fruiterers; smell this in its fetid, fishy corridors; see this in the hardened faces of its vendors; taste this in one of the multitude of brothy bowls you are at a luxury to choose from. Simultaneously, this Market is emblematic of the rapid gentrification of Melbourne’s West over the past 10 to 15 years. Like the remainder of the West, Footscray Market finds itself torn: in clinging to its rough, suburban roots, and in constructing for itself a new, upmarket representation in keeping with the rest of the city. The prices might demonstrate this point well. Although most goods sold here are of a typically mundane market quality, the prices are steep by market standards. You mightn’t be misplaced either in thinking that some of the stalls were pandering to tourists or to those with deeper pockets. Despite its woes, a view to the hundreds of Vietnamese Australian families dining in at Footscray Market on almost any day of the week – harping on in thick Australian accents, gossiping about their colleagues to their relatives over a steamy bowl of chao – this Market is significant.
