I’ve been 12 years straight and every year it gets worse. It’s obvious the people writing good reviews have never skied in Europe or US or similar. Mt Buller has one thing going for it, which is 3hr drive from Melbourne, which is also the issue, it’s over run and ruined. Clearly the need to turn a profit is a priority over the experience and that’s understandable. Every year I weigh up the options, New Zealand is similar and whilst cheaper by the time you add flights it’s the same…. Go further, eg Hotham, slightly better but still outrageous prices and unreliable conditions, and the extra few hours in the car feels like a barrier too. Now, you could say that Mount Buller, bad as it is, is still better than not skiing at all (that why I’ve kept coming) but my review is based on RELATIVE to the average ski resort, obviously I haven’t been to thousands but I have been to hundreds so have a good sense of what average is. On all of these measures, Mt Buller is very well below average.
Price very high Snow very poor mostly Viability rare Weather patchy often rains kids get wet and cold Food truly dreadful and at lunch time hard to even access Ski runs short (very rarely all open , I have experienced twice in 12yrs) Lifts old and slow Infrastructure (eg buses roads accomodation etc insufficient for the crowds in peak) Ski school mainly kids not great (and hard for young kids to access)
I think what has made Buller get worse and worse is the insane amount of day trippers who seem to be coming to witness the snow or take a selfie…. I guess some bus company must be making some money off them, but it’s ruining the resort (it’s already pretty bad)
My advice to anyone reading, is come away from school holidays and have very low expectations and take packed lunch every day!
My advice to Buller, can you limit the numbers? Can you invest in fast lifts of better facilities just to make it seem like the high prices are justified?
For me I am just doing anything to give my kids skills time, Japan in January is 10000x better but once a year isn’t enough for a ski bum like me, and I’m sure people will say why you live in Australia then! That’s...
Read moreI recently spent a long weekend at Mt Buller and honestly, I didn’t want to leave. The whole experience felt like stepping into a snow globe – from the moment we arrived, everything was covered in soft powder and the village had this cozy alpine charm.
The ski runs were well maintained and there was a great mix for all levels – I’m more of an intermediate skier, but my partner is a beginner and we both found slopes we loved. The lift lines were manageable even during the weekend rush, and the staff were friendly and helpful (especially the folks at the chairlifts – kudos to them for keeping things moving in the cold!).
The village itself had everything we needed – warm coffee shops, surprisingly good pizza, and a few pubs for après ski. We stayed in one of the lodges close to Bourke Street and could basically ski in and out, which made a huge difference.
That said, Mt Buller isn’t without its flaws. The resort can get very crowded on weekends and during school holidays, which means longer lift queues and busier slopes, especially around the main runs. Accommodation and food are on the pricier side — pretty standard for Aussie snow spots, but still something to factor in. Parking and access can be a bit of a mission too; if you’re not staying overnight, getting up the mountain and catching the shuttle with all your gear isn’t exactly seamless. And depending on the season, snow coverage can be a bit unpredictable — best to check the forecast before booking.
Still, despite the few unavailabilities and bad let-downs, Mt Buller totally lived up to the hype. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned skier, it’s well worth the trip. Already planning...
Read moreFirst time to Mt buller, and what a memory I must say, I was there with my family and friends having good time, taking pictures and skiing. And while I was striking pose with the ski, one of the SKI STAFF ASKED ME, “ IS THAT YOURS? YOU BOUGHT IT? OR JUST PICKED UP FROM HERE?”
I just straight looked at him and said , “ Ofcourse it’s mine, I rented it and bought it” and then he walked off. Personally I felt very offended and it ruined my whole day after that. As far as long I have been here in Australia I can definitely assure you guys that he was being racist. The way he questioned me with that face was just unacceptable and rude. And you got lucky I don’t remember your name, whoever you are but God bless you. Good luck next time. Hope I...
