This park is a beautiful and well-maintained public park located in the heart of the suburb of Burwood in Sydney, Australia. It is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, and is an ideal spot for relaxation, recreation, and family outings.
The park features a wide range of facilities and amenities that cater to different interests and age groups. For sports enthusiasts, there are several sporting fields and courts for soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, and basketball. There is also a children's playground with a variety of play equipment, as well as a dedicated area for toddlers.
One of the highlights of Burwood Park is its tranquil and picturesque pond, which is home to a variety of bird species such as ducks, swans, and pelicans. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the pond, relax on the benches, or have a picnic on the spacious lawn areas.
The park also features well-maintained gardens, with a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers that provide a beautiful backdrop for visitors to enjoy. There are several walking paths and bike tracks that provide a scenic way to explore the park and get some exercise.
Another notable feature of Burwood Park is the historic bandstand, which has been a fixture of the park since the early 20th century. The bandstand hosts regular music and cultural events, adding to the vibrant atmosphere...
Read moreThis is a nice park. It is situated in a good location opposite Westfield and many shops. There is a really nice cafe in the park which apparently happens to be one of the most instagramable cafes in Sydney. You can rent a picnic basket and have a picnic in the park. Very cool. The park also has tennis courts, play equipment for kids, sports fields, a pond where you can feed the ducks and other birds, a water stream, a gazebo, and many many recreational areas just to chill out and watch the world go by. There are also many statues and monuments in the park which is nice. An iconic monument is at the entrance which looks similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This commemorates the soldiers who have given their lives for Australia which is touching. There is another soldier statue and I think a statue commemorating Confucius which I think is a tribute to the Chinese community in Burwood. The park also has many events in it including Anzac Day ceremonies, the Burwood festival and the annual Burwood Xmas carols (which is surprisingly nice). The park is also home to many animals. My favourite is spotting possums running around at night. I saw a man feeding them while they were sitting in a tree which was funny. Overall a nice park and...
Read moreI have fond memories of playing in competition cricket matches on the park here. It seems amazing that organised cricket was actually ever played here now. I recall balls being hit into cars and the houses on the other side of the road.
I also recall being on Burwood Road in early December 1973 dressed in white walking over to play in an undr 14's match on a Saturday morning. An old fellow was walking up the park and asked if I could help carry his bag to the other side of the cricket ground. It was the direction I was walking to.
The old fellow had a glassy eye and a wrinkled fact. He told me he was 78 years old. I did a quick maths calculation and thought that he may have been old enough to have been a soldier in World War one - so I asked him and he said he was on the western front. He said he was in the Australian infantry and was also in the trenches. He told me that he went on trench raids into the German lines.
I carried his bag over to his daughters place which was directly across the road from the cricket park. I then participated in the game.
I've never forgotten my encounter with a World War one Australian soldier in 1973 at...
