We received an invite to attend a media launch at the shiny new Taste of Shanghai Burwood restaurant. It is a huge space attached to Westfield shopping centre; with a large open kitchen and modern fit out with decorative reference to Shanghai. This new venue is sophisticated and complete with a bar which is right in front of you at the entrance. There is also a private dining room, complete with two large round tables both with an extravagant marble lazy Susan.

The menu contains many of their standout home style cooking from the other venues and some new options including stews, stone bowls and their Grand Opening Special Chilli Crayfish which alone is worth visiting for.

No need to go thirsty with their stocked bar and a range of interesting and the non alcoholic drink options available. Choose your refreshment, be it white wine, red wine, beer, maybe a lychee and mango crush, ice cream milk tea or signature lemon tea.

The ordering was left in the hands of our lovely host Amy. The banquet included an amazing selection of food, chosen for all in attendance to share. With a number of Shanghainese favourites marching toward the table including pan fried pork buns, sun dried cabbage pancakes and the fried dough sticks awaiting any opportunity to soak up any delicious sauce left over. A line up of the chef's picks come to rest on the Lazy Susan. The favourites were creatively presented Barramundi in Lemon sauce, the mud crab in special sauce, braised pork belly as well as the sweet and sour eggplant. Other notables were the stewed tofu with salt pork, pickled white radish and squid ink rice with seafood.

It wouldn't be a banquet with out a sweet finish and lets face it, room can always be spared for mango pancakes. These were particularly good as they were made using fresh mango. No fresh mango, no mango pancakes! This is reflective of all the food being served at this restaurant. Fresh and delicious! Other desserts arrived, including fruit platters and deep fried Chinese milk dough.

We loved the fit out and shared a meal in good company. Thank you to Ompty media for allowing us to tag along and to Amy as well as the staff of Taste of Shanghai for their...

I understand the wait for delicious food and when the restaurant is busy during peak hours are absolutely valuable. However, this restaurant has disappointed my group of friends. We were patiently waiting for our table, from 30 mins to 45 mins to 60 mins and we were still asked to wait. Not only the lady at the reception has not been able to tell us a proper expectation time, but also she has bad customer service. We were following up the time expectation because the waiting time has been pushed back a number of times and we saw FEW empty tables already, she told us off not to keep asking abt time and give her time. She was not aware that she kept saying 5 mins each time and said out of her control if customers do not want to leave.

While the restaurant is busy, and if there is short staff for the day/night, the manager shd have arrange time restriction per table like any other famous restaurants when there are 5 diff groups waiting for 5 tables for over 30 mins.

We then saw empty tables inside were cleaned up. No matter the table is big or small, especially during peak hour, the restaurant shd allow any group with 4 or more to dine in.

Bad management, bad customer service, does not deliver promises- out of integrity.

We left the restaurant after 1 hr 10...

Be prepared for a lengthy wait line! We waited for over an hour during a Friday evening. They offer a call back when your table is available or you can wait at the entrance inside. It can get packed while waiting. To help time pass quicker, you can browse the menu and select the dishes you would like. We ordered in total 4 dishes; corn soup, yangzhou style fried rice, fried noodles with pork & vegetables, and xiao long bao. This cost $50.70 which is quite affordable for their generous portions. The corn soup was hearty, however, after a few spoon fulls- the soup quickly became thin. The yangzhou fried rice are customers favourite and there is a reason for it. There was a nice smokiness infused in the rice. The ham also helps compliment the depth of flavour. Unfortunately, the fried noodles was a let down. Too much oil and a heavy taste of sesame oil which did work with the noodle (see the photo attached). The xiao long bao was nice but nothing extraordinary. The meaty broth gave the interior a nice warmth. The dough was perfect, not too doughy or thin. Overall, not a bad experience. The servers were attentive and friendly. Will come back to try more dishes but will definitely book a reservation to avoid a long wait!

A decent choice for a lively Chinese dinner This restaurant offers a pleasant dining experience with a nice atmosphere and dependable food, making it a solid option, especially if you're seeking a comfortable sit-down meal over a budget-friendly bite. The xiao long bao and pan-fried pork buns were definite standouts, and the roasted duck was also nicely done. While the remaining dishes were enjoyable, they weren’t "mind-blowing". Also some dishes, such as the prawns in XO sauce with vermicelli and the twice-fried eggplant, though tasty, were a bit too oily for our taste. The restaurant has a nice vibe and friendly staff, and the service was quite quick. We arrived on a Saturday night at 6:20 PM and were told there was a 40-minute wait for a table of 5, but ended up sitting after ~25-30 minutes. Being able to fill out our menu while waiting was also convenient. We paid $39pp and were all full. While it might not be the best Chinese restaurant out there, it’s a reliable and enjoyable choice for a more relaxed dining experience.
