This is only some of the many activities to do in Vienna with kids: 1. Spanish Riding School - If your kids are into horses then this is a no brainer. Just to say you have been to this prestigious school to watch a practice is pretty cool. It can be a short commitment if you don’t have much time. 2. Schönbrunn Palace is a short train ride from the city center. In addition to the historical palace, it is home to some incredible gardens, a maze, the Palmhouse AND the worlds oldest continually operating zoo in the world! 3. Vienna’s Natural History Museum is nothing short of impressive. Whether your kids are into dinosaurs and extinct mammals or meteorites and crystals, the collection the have on display is incredible. 4. Visit the Carriage stables and ride into town! So most people just take a picturesque carriage ride around the downtown area, BUT what many people don’t know is you can tour the carriage stable right outside of town and then ride a horse carriage into town and get dropped off at St. Stephens Cathedral. The kids loved this! 5. Prater Amusement Park. This is like a mix between a theme park and a fair. It is open 24 hours a day with free entry and you pay per ride. There was a lot of interesting Viennese folklore that inspired some of the rides which was unique and fun for us. This is a good activity for kids/adults of all ages. 6. The Butterfly House or Schmetterling Haus is fun for kids too. It’s located in one of the most beautiful Nouveau palm houses in the world, where we enjoyed lunch after admiring the butterflies. Probably better for smaller kids. 7. The sweet treats! From the famous Sacher cake to ice cream shops everywhere, there is no shortage of sweets. We also like to think of these as bribes for our kids! Save this post for later! Visiting the Museum of Natural History in Vienna was an unforgettable experience. The museum, housed in a magnificent historical building, offers a vast collection that caters to all ages and interests. From the moment we stepped inside, we were awed by the grandeur of the architecture and the richness of the exhibits. The museum's extensive collection covers everything from prehistoric artifacts to meteorites, fossils, and a stunning array of minerals. The dinosaur exhibit was particularly impressive, featuring life-sized skeletons that transported us back to a time when these majestic creatures roamed the earth. The well-preserved fossils and detailed information plaques provided a deep dive into the prehistoric era. One of the highlights was the hall of minerals and gems, where we marveled at the dazzling displays of precious stones and learned about their geological formations. The meteorite exhibit was equally fascinating, offering a rare glimpse into the cosmic materials that have collided with our planet over millennia. The museum also boasts a comprehensive collection of anthropological artifacts, showcasing the evolution of human culture and societies. Interactive displays and multimedia installations throughout the museum made the experience engaging and educational for visitors of all ages. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to assist, enhancing our visit with their insights. Whether you’re a history buff, a science enthusiast, or just looking for an enriching outing, the Museum of Natural History in Vienna is a must-visit. Its combination of stunning exhibits, historical significance, and educational value makes it a standout attraction in the city. Highly recommended!

Wonderful place. As a person interested in biology, I spent about 5 hours in there, probably more (lost track of time ngl) and it has been worth it. I don't really recommend going if you don't speak english or german. You will miss a lot of fascinating info and facts. However children may enjoy the dinosaurs, mammoths and big insects regardless of the language. The building is awe-inspiring, both outside and inside. The first floor to me was the most informative and I spent most of my time there. The second floor is house to the great many of the specimen collected by the museum. The descriptions however were short, usually only the name of the species, and they were only in german and latin. I speak neither so that floor was a quick walk for me. On the second floor you can find the museum cafe. It's very picturesque but it was closed the day of my visit. It was friday afternoon. I want to encourage you to not treat this museum as another tourist attraction on the list to take a quick look at. Plan at the very least 3 hours for the tour and use that time to find out fascinating things about our planet. It really is a good place to learn. Don't forget to look up from time to time and notice beautiful painted landscapes hanging right under the ceiling

Very Impressed! We took our son (2 years old) who is very interested in dinosaurs and we had a wonderful experience! We spent most of the time in the Dino room. He was very excited and he loved it! I highly recommend this place if you have kids who are interested in Dinosaurs. The other exhibitions are very interesting too. They had a big display of sharks which my son really liked. It’s a bit difficult to go around the museum in detail with a toddler but if I was there alone I could easily spend 2-3 hours looking at everything in detail. We arrived 5 mins before opening time on a Sunday morning. It felt like we were the only ones in the room at some times but when we were leaving there were lots of people lining up to buy tickets so you’ll get a better experience if you go early in the morning. We sat at the museum cafe for coffee and cake. Nice experience. Friendly service and good food and drinks. We also took the stroller and left it in the stroller parking area near the entrance. But if you need to go around with the stroller there is a lift so it’s possible. The museum is barrier free. I will definitely buy an annual pass next time because it’s a great place to take my child and spark his curiosity.

The Museum of Natural History in Vienna is a fascinating destination for anyone with a curiosity about the natural world. Housed in an opulent 19th-century building, the museum boasts an impressive collection of over 30 million objects, ranging from ancient fossils and meteorites to vibrant mineral displays and taxidermy animals. One of the museum’s highlights is the Venus of Willendorf, a 29,500-year-old figurine that is one of the most famous archaeological finds in the world. Another standout exhibit is the comprehensive collection of dinosaur skeletons, which is both educational and awe-inspiring. The meteorite collection is also renowned, being one of the largest and oldest in the world. The museum’s layout is easy to navigate, and the exhibits are well-organized with clear information, making it engaging for both adults and children. The intricate detail of the architecture, with its grand staircases and frescoed ceilings, adds to the overall experience, making it not just a museum visit but a journey through history. Whether you’re a science enthusiast or just curious, the Museum of Natural History in Vienna offers a truly immersive and enriching experience.

I spent 4hrs in the museum and still didn't see everything but I will say that I learnt that I'm really into rocks and they had a very extensive rock /mineral collection with lots of informative displays on different types of rock formations, origin etc. If you don't spend as much time as me looking at EVERY single rock and reading every description then you can probably cover the museum in 3-3.5 hours. They also had quite a few interactive boards and displays which were fun to use, really informative and mostly child friendly. I especially enjoyed the meteor strike simulator! They were not so many dinosaur fossils or models at this museum (as opposed to other Natural history museums) but the ones they did have were quite cool I think. I also really enjoyed the section on human evolution and the zoologist section (which was almost the entire second floor) And when you're there don't forget to look up! In many of the display rooms there's art on the walls near the ceilings and/or intricately carved statues a detail which can easily be overlooked given how exciting the displays right in front of you are :)
