There is a souq inside bab al Bahrain. Bahrain’s postal services history dates as far back as 1884. The latter was marked by the opening of its first facility in Manama. The Bureau, managed by a superintendent and a postman, was housed in the residence of the assistant to the British political agent in Bahrain. The Bureau served as a sub-office of the Indian Post Office in Bombay (Mumbai), which administered the country’s postal services at that time. In the 1940ies, the Manama post office relocated to the old government building in Bab Al-Bahrain. In 1947, the post office was transferred to the customs building opposite of Bab Al-Bahrain and is still in use today.
In 2015, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities installed a permanent exhibition in the old government building in Bab Al-Bahrain. Designed by Ammar Basheir, the display includes postage stamps, memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the history of postal services in Bahrain.

Due to extensive land reclamation in the later half of the 20th century, the structure is now several kilometres inland. The square is considered to be the region's first formal public space.
Location The building is situated on Government Avenue in Manama. It lies adjacent to the King Faisal Highway that leads to the causeway connecting the country to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia The Bahrain Financial Harbour and other landmarks are nearby.
History The monument itself was refurbished in 1986 to incorporate Islamic architectural features.[citation needed] Today, the ground floor now houses the tourist information office and a handicrafts shop. The monument essentially consists of a huge arch, below which runs a road, which is often referred to as the entrance to the Manama souq (marketplace). The building hosts several shops and cafes, including Naseef Cafe which was the first ice cream shop in the country. Government Avenue, which runs in front of Bab Al Bahrain, contains many major banks and business establishments. Government Avenue is so named because the entire offices of the Bahrain government were once housed here.[citation needed] The Gold City (different from Gold Souq) is a shopping complex for gold ornaments and is also located on Government Avenue.
