My family of four and our friends’ family are currently staying at the Barcelo Maya Resort, and I want to share our recent experience. Unfortunately, everything has been awful—truly disappointing—and as a travel agent in the past, I mean it. We were so excited to stay at this place, but everything went wrong from the beginning. I booked our stay in Colonial well in advance, back in April. However, upon arrival, we found out that while our friends were staying in Colonial, our family had been moved to Beach, and there was no way to change that. When we tried to book à la carte restaurants together, the not-so-polite lady in charge of reservations said it wasn’t possible because we were staying in different resorts! Only after I insisted on speaking with a manager did she finally book us all together. But imagine how “convenient” it is for us to be staying in completely separate resorts, far away from each other. Entertainment This was another disaster. There was absolutely nothing happening in either of our resorts—no music around the pools, no games, nothing. There was some entertainment around the pool in Caribe, but honestly, it was terrible. The New Year’s Eve entertainment was a complete disappointment. If you wanted to watch the evening show, you had to buy a bottle of champagne for at least $250! And there was nothing else going on at the resorts at all, so guests had no other options. As for the show itself—it was the worst and most boring we’ve ever seen. Truly awful. We ended up leaving before 11 PM because we were almost falling asleep. We even saw a few people literally sleeping during the show. Food The food was also subpar. We’re not picky eaters, but compared to other resorts we’ve stayed at, it’s far worse here. Beach and Pools The beach may look nice, but water shoes are a must. There are so many rocks in the water, making it uncomfortable to walk or swim. The pools are clean and probably the only thing we liked about the resort. However, to get a spot by the pool, you need to wake up at 6:30–7:00 AM to reserve chairs; otherwise, there’s no chance of finding even one available later in the day. Wi-Fi Another disaster. There’s no Wi-Fi on the beach, and the connection throughout the resort is terrible. In short, we won’t be coming back to this resort—ever. Last year, we stayed at Bahia Principe, and everything there was far better: great food, free entertainment, and an amazing New Year’s Eve party that was absolutely over the top. They had pool parties every day, foam parties, and fantastic activities. Our standard room there was also much bigger and better than the one we have here—and we paid much less for it.

We are a couple in our 40's travelling without children. The complex is made of 6 different resorts and if you stay at the colonial you get unrestricted access to 4 of them. You do not have access to the facilities at the Palace or the Adult Only resorts. This was our 3rd time to the resort complex and the first time at the colonial. The best part of this place is the ocean. You can snorkel with turtles directly at the resort. The room was older and a little older but they were actively refreshing (painting) rooms in our building while we were there. The bed was comfortable but was ironically falling apart on one side. I didn't report it as the bed was still comfortable and I was fearful that I would be charged for damages (that we were not responsible for). This was because we heard from other travellers the hotel charges you if you damage the sheets (bloody nose etc). Either way, this was a great place to go if you have kids, but not so great if you're looking to avoid kids. There are multiple pools. Some heated, some not. Some with music, some not. There are plenty of loungers by the pools and beach, but the towel game is played hard here. If you're picky on where you lounge you'll want to get up early and reserve your spot by 930 am. We went down anywhere between 8 and 12. Although it was trickier to find a spot closer to noon, we didn't get skunked. You may have to find a single lounger and drag it with you to find another one. But there was no issue with moving things around. The towel game issue is very self imposed. At no time were all the reserved chairs actually full. The resort is not strict on towels so (somehow) people were able to get multiple towels even though you only were given one towel card. People would then reserve multiple loungers at both the beach and pool but usually only used one set. The a la cart restaurants were quite good and the buffet was decent. As this was our 3rd time to the resort I can say that we did notice a drop in the food options. We never left hungry but never really walked away saying "that was such an awesome meal". The worst part of the buffet was how busy it was. We learnt early on that if you go at typical eating times 8,12,6 then you will be bombarded by people and snot nosed kids touching everything, screaming and just making the environment feel more like a mall food court than a buffet at a 5 star resort. All in all, it won't be our last time to the complex, but we likely won't return to the colonial. The Adults Only is far far far superior in food quality, pools, rooms and overall experience.

Rooms are very outdated and stinky.Bathrooms don’t have any ventilation.Beds are very uncomfortable and in the middle there is like a sinkhole, we woke up every morning with pain in our body from the bed. There is ants crawling around the room all the time(I took a screenshot of the video I had and circled the ants I recorded on one of the video. They are small but you sure feel them at night on your skin).Stuff don’t speak English and very unwelcoming feeling in the resort. When we arrived at the resort after 6+ hours traveling they mad us wait for 3 hours to get the key since we were early. When the time came to go to the room they gave us the keys and told us go straight and left and you should be there, that was not the case we were wondering around for like an hour until we figured it out.I never had this kind of experience before.Usually they take you to the room and even show you around.Let me not say they welcome you with a drink in different resort but not here.We tried to complain and were told to get paper from the front desk write the complaint and handed to the front desk person!I couldn’t believe what I heard from the guest service lady?! The food is repeated every day and the show is not so fun to watch very outdated. Please don’t forget to bring sunscreen because they charging $61 for one!!Very stressful vacation .Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

Stayed for a week in Colonial with my two kids. Good overall. Check in was fast. Great water parks for kids and many pools. Pirate island park was $20 per person per day but was worth the money for us. Activities with Dolphins were overpriced, so we didn't go. Beach and pool areas are clean. Beach has rocks, so water shoes are a must. Rooms are standard, cleaning was fine for the most part. Although once the cleaning staff took my beach towels from the room. Those ones that you get charged for if they get lost. I had to explain at the reception and get the new ones and had to hide them from cleaning staff afterwards. The key card stopped working only once and had to be reprogrammed at the reception. The buffet was better at Caribe hotel next door so we went there instead. Great selection of food every day, but the taste was hit and miss at times for certain foods and so was service. Some days nobody would pay attention and we would go and bring drinks ourselves. Other days the servers would come 3-4 times. I believe it has to do with how busy they are. Staff is great and very friendly otherwise. Pool bars had lineups at times, so get ready to wait for your drinks under direct sun for a while. In general, this place met my expectations. Just didn't exceed them.

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional service experience I recently had at Restaurant Kyoto located in Hotel Barcelo Maya Colonial. During my visit, the service provided by Chef Sergio and the waitstaff, Francisca and Addy, was truly outstanding. Their attention to detail, dedication, and friendly demeanor significantly enhanced my dining experience. It was evident that they went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of my meal was enjoyable and memorable. The professionalism and care exhibited by Chef Sergio and the team not only met but exceeded my expectations. Their personalized approach and commitment to customer satisfaction are commendable and deserve recognition. I believe that it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate excellence in service, and I wanted to bring to your attention the exemplary performance of your staff at Restaurant Kyoto. Their efforts have undoubtedly contributed to creating a positive and lasting impression. Thank you once again for providing such a wonderful dining experience. I look forward to returning to Hotel Barcelo Maya Colonial in the future and experiencing the outstanding service at Restaurant Kyoto once more.

This is Alfredo one of the top notch waiters. Very respectable and kind with exceptional service. Everything was wonderful besides the bedrooms. Water leaks can happen as it happens at our own homes. My daughter went to have a bath and water was leaking out the light fixture above the tub. That was one issue, which can happen anytime. We had to relocate rooms. The other problem is everything in the room is damp. The beds, clothes the walls. You can see black mould that’s continuously been painted over. If they renovated the rooms, this resort would be top notch on my list. But as far as I’m concerned with the sleeping quarters the way they are I give this resort 3/5 as it’s very unhealthy to be breathing this stuff in. Everything else is great. Beautiful lush and well maintained grounds , nice pools, excellent kids club and the food was good great. 7/10 for food.
